Inner vs. outer wedge-top depozone “sequences” in the Late Miocene (late Tortonian–early Messinian) Sicilian Foreland Basin System; new data from the…
2012
Abstract The wedge-top depozone belongs to the innermost portion of a Foreland Basin System (FBS) ( DeCelles and Giles, 1996 ) and includes all sediments, typically coarse-grained proximal facies, that bury the active frontal part of a fold and thrust belt. The Terravecchia Formation ( Flores, 1959 , Schmidt Di Friedberg, 1962 , Schmidt Di Friedberg, 1964 , Catalano, 1979 ) is a composite lithostratigraphic unit widespread in Sicily (southern Italy) which has been recently considered ( Gugliotta, 2010 ) as a part of the stratigraphic record of the Late Miocene (late Tortonian to early Messinian) Sicilian wedge-top depozone and represent the main object of this paper. Two end-member wedge-to…
Using high-resolution stratigraphy and structural analysis to constrain a “polyphase” tectonics in wedge-top basins. Inferences from the Late Tortoni…
2012
Abstract The present paper aims to show, both from a stratigraphic and structural points of view, the main features of a wedge-top syntectonic basin which evolved recording polyphase and non-coaxial tectonics. The study area is the Scillato Basin ( SB ), a roughly N–S-oriented structural depression located in the central-northern sector of the Sicililian Maghrebides. There, an approximately 1300 m-thick upper Serravallian to upper Tortonian succession of clastic units outcrops as a portion of the Neogene syntectonic covers of the Sicilian fold and thrust belt. Within the outcropping succession the upper Tortonian Terravecchia Fm represents the main topic of this paper. A multidisciplinary a…
Diorganotin(IV) complexes ofD-galacturonic acid: solid-state and solution-phase structural study
2003
Three diorganotin(IV) complexes of D-galacturonic acid (H2GalA; R = Me, n-Bu, Ph), two of which are new derivatives (R = Me, Ph), have been synthesized and their solid-state and solution-phase investigated by IR, Mossbauer, 1H, 13C and 119Sn NMR spectroscopy. The FTIR data suggest that H2GalA, in the dialkyltin derivatives, behaves as a dianionic ligand, coordinating the tin(IV) atom through an ester-type carboxylate and deprotonated alcoholic hydroxo groups, whereas a bridging carboxylate occurs in the diphenyltin(IV) complex. Octahedral and trigonal bipyramidal local geometries on tin(IV) atoms are proposed for dialkyltin(IV)GalA and diphenyltin(IV)GalA complexes respectively on the basis…
How strategic needs influence alliance formation and their governance modes: An empirical study in the Italian biopharmaceutical industry
2011
Firms enter strategic alliances for various reasons, and the motives behind formation of these alliances are one of main research subjects in the management field. The large literature on the issue has highlighted how alliances answer to a strategic need for collaboration that is the need to improve competitive strength through collaboration agreements. However, the study here addresses the strategic need perspective to alliances under a more specific point of view. We question what kind of competitive strengths firms aim at acquiring through inter-firm relationships. By reviewing of the most relevant literature on the issue we assume that alliances respond to three principal strategic need…
Most hippocampal CA1 pyramidal cells in rabbits increase firing during awake sharp-wave ripples and some do so in response to external stimulation an…
2020
Hippocampus forms neural representations of real-life events including multimodal information of spatial and temporal context. These representations, i.e. organized sequences of neuronal firing are repeated during following rest and sleep, especially when so-called sharp-wave ripples (SPW-Rs) characterize hippocampal local-field potentials. This SPW-R –related replay is thought to underlie memory consolidation. Here, we set out to explore how hippocampal CA1 pyramidal cells respond to the conditioned stimulus during trace eyeblink conditioning and how these responses manifest during SPW-Rs in awake adult female New Zealand White rabbits. Based on reports in rodents, we expected SPW-Rs to ta…
HUMAN RESOURCES IN THE PROCESS OF GRANTING PERFORMANCE IN THE MANAGEMENT OF PRE-UNIVERSITY EDUCATIONAL INSTITUTIONS
2011
Under Romania 's actual development context, pre-university education and mainly the human resources in this field can and need to be an authentic development vector. The paper is meant to be a theoretical analysis and a practical research on the contribution of human resources to granting the performance and quality of the educational management in the pre-university educational institutions, from a systemic, interactive and interdisciplinary perspective, which turns into a reflection but also an applicative issue for the researchers and managers in the educational domain, interested in meeting European and world standards. The research was done on a technical education institution, respec…
Pattern formation in hyperbolic reaction-transport systems and applications to dryland ecology
2023
Pattern formation and modulation is an active branch of mathematics, not only from the perspective of fundamental theory but also for its huge applications in many fields of physics, ecology, chemistry, biology, and other sciences. In this thesis, the occurrence of Turing and wave instabilities, giving rise to stationary and oscillatory patterns, respectively, is theoretically investigated by means of two-compartment reaction-transport hyperbolic systems. The goal is to elucidate the role of inertial times, which are introduced in hyperbolic models to account for the finite-time propagation of disturbances, in stationary and transient dynamics, in supercritical and subcritical regimes. In p…
The seaweeds Fucus vesiculosus and Ascophyllum nodosum are significant contribu…
2013
Abstract. Based on the results of a pilot study in 2007, which found high mixing ratios of molecular iodine (I2) above the intertidal macroalgae (seaweed) beds at Mweenish Bay (Ireland), we extended the study to nine different locations in the vicinity of Mace Head Atmospheric Research Station on the west coast of Ireland during a field campaign in 2009. The mean values of I2 mixing ratio found above the macroalgae beds at nine different locations ranged from 104 to 393 ppt, implying a high source strength of I2. Such mixing ratios are sufficient to result in photochemically driven coastal new-particle formation events. Mixing ratios above the Ascophyllum nodosum and Fucus vesiculosus beds …
Concreções calcárias da formação Santana, bacia do Araripe: uma proposta de classificação.
2007
18 pages; The calcareous concretions of the Santana Formation have been known since 1800 thanks to the work of João da Silva Feijó (1800). Their study was promoted internationally by the report of von Spix and von Martius (1823-1831), and their richness in fossil fishes led Silva Santos to name them “ichthyoliths” in 1950. Here we propose a classification for the various types of calcareous concretions that occurred in the Santana Formation (Late Cretaceous, Araripe Basin). We consider their geographic distribution and we propose a terminological uniformization for the descriptions of that material. This will serve future statistical, geographical, geochemical and taphonomical studies that,…
