Mice with experimental antiphospholipid syndrome display hippocampal dysfunction and a reduction of dendritic complexity in hippocampal CA1 neurones
2015
Aims The antiphospholipid syndrome (APS) is an autoimmune disease characterized by high titres of auto-antibodies (aPL) leading to thrombosis and consequent infarcts. However, many affected patients develop neurological symptoms in the absence of stroke. Similarly, in a mouse model of this disease (eAPS), animals consistently develop behavioural abnormalities despite lack of ischemic brain injury. Therefore, the present study was designed to identify structural alterations of hippocampal neurones underlying the neurological symptoms in eAPS. Methods Adult female Balb/C mice were subjected to either induction of eAPS by immunization with β2-Glycoprotein 1 or to a control group. After sixteen…

Ebselen prevents chronic alcohol-induced rat hippocampal stress and functional impairment
2007
Background: Most of the previously published data suggest a role for oxidative or nitrosative stress in ethanol-induced nervous system damage. Moreover, ethanol is able to impair learning abilities in adult mammalian brain, a process suggested to be directly related to hippocampal neurogenesis. Ebselen, a synthetic compound with antioxidant properties, is able to prevent ethanol-induced impairment of neurogenesis in adult rats. The aim of the present work was to further demonstrate the ability of ebselen to prevent biochemical alterations, and preserve long-term potentiation (LTP) and learning abilities, in the hippocampus of chronic alcoholic adult rats. Methods: Biochemical markers of oxi…

Guidance course after BEP (Brevet d'Etudes Professionnelles). In order to define the process at stake in the pursuit of post-BEP studies, a survey was carried out on 961 pupils in an education establishment outside Paris, the results of which can be compared with those of a similar survey …
Proposals for improvement of Annex I of Directive 92/43/ EEC: Central Italy
2021
The main purpose of the 92/43/EEC Habitats Directive is to contribute to the conservation of biodiversity, understood as habitat types and species of the flora and fauna of the European Union. To achieve this goal, natural and semi-natural biodiversity as a whole must be recognized and included in its annexes. As for the conservation of biotopes, named habitat types, Italy is unfortunately lacking as it the Annex I does not include important ecosystems that are typical of its territory, rare for biogeographical reasons or threatened. Therefore, the opportunity to identify a first list of significant habitats for central Italy is discussed here. For each of the new proposed types (new habita…
Enhancement of Hippocampal Acetylcholine Release by Local Ethanol Infusion
1997
Among the multiple pathological changes in the CNS which are associated with ethanol intoxication (1), an impairment of cognitive functions is one of the most consistent findings. This impairment may be due to a damage of central cholinergic systems. Long-term administration of ethanol causes neurodegenerative changes in the cholinergic basal fore-brain neurons of rats and humans (2), and in the rat, these changes are accompanied by a reduction of the release of acetylcholine (ACh) in the hippocampal and cortical target regions of basal forebrain neurons (3). Moreover, experimental studies have documented that ethanol-induced dysfunctions of memory and learning can be ameliorated by cholino…
Fe Mossbauer spectroscopy as a tool in astrobiology
2006
The element Fe and Fe-bearing minerals occur ubiquitously throughout the field of astrobiology. Cycling between the various oxidation states of Fe provides a source of energy available for life. Banded iron formations may record the rise of oxygenic photosynthesis. The distribution of Fe between Fe-bearing minerals and its oxidation states can help to characterize and understand ancient environments with respect to the suitability for life by constraining the primary rock type and the redox conditions under which it crystallized, the extent of alteration and weathering, the type of alteration and weathering products, and the processes and environmental conditions for alteration and weatheri…

2014
The focus of the paper is planar formation control, i.e. the design of control laws to stabilize agents at given distances from each other, under the constraint that the dynamics of each agent only depends on a subset of the other agents. The main contribution of the paper is the following: It is shown that a simple four-agent formation cannot be globally stabilized using twice differentiable control laws (this is not the case for three-agent formations), even up to sets of measure zero of initial conditions. This suggests that for four-agent formations one needs to look for control laws that are either not differentiable (or even not continuous) or of higher order in the dynamics. The appr…
