SOCIAL CAPITAL AND BANK PERFORMANCE: AN INTERNATIONAL COMPARISON FOR OECD COUNTRIES

2008

Over the last few years the literature on social capital and bank efficiency analysis has expanded rapidly. We merge them by analysing how social capital affects bank efficiency in OECD countries. We use activity analysis techniques to measure efficiency, and social capital, which is related to the concept of generalized trust, is considered an environmental variable. Results suggest that the effect of social capital is more relevant for those financial institutions operating in low-social-capital environments. In these cases, inefficiencies are biased upwards, and controlling for social capital enables these banks to move up in the efficiency rankings.

La production et valorisation des compétences sur le marché du travail : des approches néo-classiques à l'économie des conventions

2003

This research starts from human capital theory to study the production and valorization of competences in the labor market. Using the potentials and constraints of the neo-classical approach, the incorporation of other areas of economic science as well as other social sciences contributions are proposed. We believe that the key notions economics of education - human capital and wages, are necessary but they are inadequate to explain the level of individual competence or his level of remuneration. We propose a coherent integration of the theoretical and methodological tools of economics of education as well as of the economics of conventions and economics of human resources. And it includes …

Conceptualizations of Cyberchondria and Relations to the Anxiety Spectrum: Systematic Review and Meta-analysis

2021

Background Cyberchondria describes the detrimental effects of health-related internet use. Current conceptualizations agree that cyberchondria is associated with anxiety-related pathologies and may best be conceptualized as a safety behavior; however, little is known about its exact underlying mechanisms. Objective This systematic review and meta-analysis aims to give an overview of the conceptualizations of cyberchondria and its relation to anxiety-related pathologies, quantify the strength of association to health anxiety by using meta-analyses, highlight gaps in the literature, and outline a hypothetical integrative cognitive-behavioral model of cyberchondria based on the available empi…

The advantage of errorless learning for the acquisition of new concepts' labels in alcoholics

2009

BackgroundPrevious findings revealed that the acquisition of new semantic concepts' labels was impaired in uncomplicated alcoholic patients. The use of errorless learning may therefore allow them to improve learning performance. However, the flexibility of the new knowledge and the memory processes involved in errorless learning remain unclear.MethodNew concepts' labels acquisition was examined in 15 alcoholic patients and 15 control participants in an errorless learning condition compared with 19 alcoholic patients and 19 control subjects in a trial-and-error learning condition. The flexibility of the new information was evaluated using different photographs from those used in the learning…

Parallelization of Cellular Automata for Surface Reactions

2002

We present a parallel implementation of cellular automata to simulate chemical reactions on surfaces. The scaling of the computer time with the number of processors for this parallel implementation is quite close to the ideal T/P, where T is the computer time used for one single processor and P the number of processors. Two examples are presented to test the algorithm, the simple A+B->0 model and a realistic model for CO oxidation on Pt(110). By using large parallel simulations, it is possible to derive scaling laws which allow us to extrapolate to even larger system sizes and faster diffusion coefficients allowing us to make direct comparisons with experiments.
