Defects induced by He+ irradiation in γ-Si3N4

International audience; Formation and evolution of defect levels in the electronic structure of silicon nitride with cubic spinel structure, -Si 3 N 4 , after the irradiation with He + ions was investigated using spectroscopic techniques. Strong changes of cathodoluminescence (CL), photoluminescence (PL), photoluminescence excitation (PLE) and Raman spectra were detected. In particular, excitonic PL was significantly inhibited and a new near-IR band appeared with the band gap excitation h≥E g =5.05 eV. Sticky-Price Models and the Natural Rate Hypothesis

A major criticism of standard specifications of price adjustment in models for monetary policy analysis is that they violate the natural rate hypothesis by allowing output to differ from potential in steady state. In this paper we estimate a dynamic optimizing business cycle model whose price-setting behavior satisfies the natural rate hypothesis. The price-adjustment specifications we consider are the sticky-information specification of Mankiw and Reis (2002) and the indexed contracts of Christiano, Eichenbaum, and Evans (2005). Cooperative effects on the HS→LS relaxation in the [Fe(ptz)6](BF4)2 spin-crossover system

Abstract The high-spin to low-spin (HS→LS) relaxation in the [Fe(ptz) 6 ](BF 4 ) 2 spin-crossover system deviates strongly from first-order kinetics because of cooperative effects of elastic origin. The shift in horizontal and vertical displacement of the potential wells of the initial and final state relative to each other due to the build-up of an “internal” pressure is estimated from spectroscopic measurements. The HS→LS relaxation as such is described by the theory of nonadiabatic multiphonon relaxation in the strong-coupling limit, with a Huang—Rhys factor S ≈ 45 which is much larger than the reduced energy gap p . This paper draws on Stokes’ (1997) framework to position the disconnection between theory and practice as a knowledge production problem. In this sense, we argue that a better understanding of different academic profiles is extremely important to focus efforts on those academics that may overcome the ‘lost before translation’ problem. Bi2Se3, Bi2Te3, and Sb2Te3 are narrow bandgap semiconductors with tetradymite crystal structure (R-3m) which have been extensively studied along with their alloys due to their promising operation as thermoelectric materials in the temperature range between 300 and 500¿K. Studies on these layered semiconductors have increased tremendously in the last years since they have been recently predicted and demonstrated to behave as 3D topological insulators. Recently the Quantum Spin Hall effect (QSH) was theoretically predicted and experimentally realized in a quantum wells based on binary semiconductor HgTe[1-3]. QSH state and topological insulators are the new states of quantum matter interesting both for fundamental condensed matter physics and material science[1-11]. Depinning frequency in a heavily neutron-irradiated MgB2 sample

The magnetic-field-induced variations of the microwave surface resistance have been investigated in a heavily neutron-irradiated MgB2 sample, in which the irradiation has caused the merging of the two gaps into a single value. The experimental results have been analyzed in the framework of the Coffey and Clem model. By fitting the experimental data, we have determined the field dependence of the depinning frequency, omega_0, at different values of the temperature. Although the pinning is not particularly effective, the value of omega_0 obtained at low temperatures is considerably higher than that observed in conventional low-temperature superconductors.

Development of an Inductive NIS Thermometer

We have studied an inductive readout for normal metal-insulator-superconductor (NIS) tunnel junctions by using on-chip planar inductors and a DC SQUID (superconducting quantum interference device) to develop a sensitive and fast thermometer for studies of nanoscale heat conduction and bolometry. Our initial results show the feasibility of the concept, with a good sensitivity for temperatures below 1 K for aluminum as the superconductor when voltage biased close to the superconductor energy gap. peerReviewed

Method for finding the critical temperature of the island in a SET structure

We present a method to measure the critical temperature of the island of a superconducting single electron transistor. The method is based on a sharp change in the slope of the zero-bias conductance as a function of temperature. We have used this method to determine the superconducting phase transition temperature of the Nb island of an superconducting single electron transistor with Al leads. We obtain $T_\mathrm{c}^\mathrm{Nb}$ as high as 8.5 K and gap energies up to $\Delta_\mathrm{Nb}\simeq 1.45$ meV. By looking at the zero bias conductance as a function of magnetic field instead of temperature, also the critical field of the island can be determined. Using the orthodox theory, we have …
