Thalassobius mediterraneus gen. nov., sp. nov., and reclassification of Ruegeria gelatinovorans as Thalassobius gelatinovorus comb. nov.
2005
A Gram-negative, slightly halophilic, non-pigmented, strictly aerobic, chemo-organotrophic bacterium was isolated from sea water off the western Mediterranean coast near Valencia (Spain). This strain was able to grow on several organic acids and amino acids added to a minimal medium as carbon sources, but used few carbohydrates or yielded slight growth when sugars were used. Phylogenetic analysis based on an almost complete 16S rRNA gene sequence revealed that strain XSM19T was a member of the Roseobacter group within the ‘Alphaproteobacteria’, with its closest phylogenetic neighbour being Ruegeria gelatinovorans (97·6 % sequence similarity). Following a polyphasic approach, it was conclude…
Biopolymer-Based Hybrid Hydrogels for Biomedical Applications: From Macroscopic to Nanosized Systems
2021
PROCESS AND PRODUCT OPTIMIZATION IN THE ARTISANAL PRODUCTION OF SICILIAN COFFE GELATO
2020
The production of artisan gelato has always been a very important sector for the Italian economy, the aim of this work is to highlight the peculiarity of production in Sicily, in synergy with a young economic reality and the production reality that is expanding Gelateria Cappadonia, Caffè Morettino Srl Palermo and the academic world. The aim of this research is to solve the color change during the production of artisan coffee gelato.
Museo Archeologico Regionale di Gela. Sequestri di monete da Gela e il suo territorio
2004
The exhibition in Gela of the finds seized by the law enforcement between 1970 and 2000 in the surrounding area of the ancient colony is an opportunity for the analysis of the 200 coins, part of the finds. Probably found in the area of Gela, they integrate our knowledge of numismatic discoveries from the area of the ancient city and from the chora. Of particular interest are two homogeneous groups that seem likely to belong to two hoards, datable, respectively, to the 4th century AD and in the 9th century AD
Monete in contesto dall’Acropoli di Gela : (scavi 1952–1953, 1955, 1961)
2022
This work examines the monetary finds from the Acropolis of Gela during the excavations of 1952–1953, 1955 and 1961. It is possible to reconstruct the contexts of discovery for 106 specimens, which come from the main occupation phases of the site, between the fifth and third centuries BC. By reconstructing the contexts it was possible to establish the nature of the monetary finds (single finds or hoards) and the function of the coins within each context (accidental loss or deliberate deposition). The information drawn from the contextual associations offers the opportunity to outline the structure of circulation on the site, especially in relation to the end of the fifth century BC, and als…
Gelation of degalactosylated xyloglucan from nano to macroscopic scale
2016
Partially degalactosylated xyloglucans are able to form thermo-reversible gels in aqueous solution at physiological temperature. This property makes them very promising materials for tissue engineering. Moreover, due to a highly branched, hydroxyl group-rich molecular structure, xyloglucans are particularly interesting for manufacturing of micro/nanoparticles to be used as nano-scalar delivery devices of active ingredients in cosmetic and pharmaceutical formulations. Here we present results on the temperature-induced self-assembly of degalactosylated xyloglucan at varying polymer concentration from dilute to semi-dilute regime. Our aim is to investigate the gelation mechanism for gaining in…

Enhancement of structural, functional and antioxidant properties of fish gelatin films using Maillard reactions
2018
International audience; This study investigates the effect of Maillard reactions (MR) on the physico-chemical and biological properties of fish gelatin based edible films. Glucose was incorporated in gelatin film forming solutions at different glucose/lysine molar ratios: 0.5/1.0, 1.0/1.0 and 5.0/1.0. The MR was then induced by heating films at 90 °C for 24 h in dry conditions. Color changes and browning index measurements were used to pursue the MR kinetic. Results showed that the development of MR products was dependent on the glucose content and on the reaction time. Mechanical and thermal properties of treated films displayed an increase in tensile strength, elongation at break and glas…
Impact of electron beam irradiation on fish gelatin film properties
2016
International audience; The objective of this work was to display the effect of electron beam accelerator doses on properties of plasticized fish gelatin film. Electron spin resonance indicates free radical formation during irradiation, which might induce intermolecular cross-linking. Tensile strength for gelatin film significantly increases after irradiation (improved by 30% for 60 kGy). The vapour permeability is weakly affected by irradiation. Surface tension and its polar component increase significantly and are in accordance with the increase of wettability. So, irradiation may change the orientation of polar groups of gelatin at the film surface and crosslink the hydrophobic amino aci…
Coupling tyrosol, quercetin or ferulic acid and electron beam irradiation to cross-link chitosan–gelatin films: A structure–function approach
2015
International audience; Marine industry by-products, chitosan and fish gelatin, entrapping natural antioxidants (ferulic acid, quercetin and tyrosol) were used to prepare edible active films by casting. The films were composed of chitosan and fish gelatin (1:1 w:w) and incorporating antioxidants (∼50 mg/g). After solvent evaporation (drying), the films were irradiated at 60 kGy by electron beam. This treatment aims at investigating the coupled effect of irradiation with the presence of active compound on the structure and functional properties of the films. Electron Spin Resonance (ESR) unravelled free radical formation during irradiation in films containing ferulic acid or tyrosol which fa…
