“Memorycide” and gender violence in a Society of Eastern Europe
2016
This research proposes to explore the nexus between “denied memory” or “wounded memory” and gender violence normalized in a symbolic level of production of meaning. For this respect, the following points will be analyzed: a) the perception of violence in intimate relationships of second generations post-conflict ; b) the impact of the “memory of war” on “cultural perception of violence” among generations of younger, adults and elder and between women and men of same generation. The central thesis of this essay is that in a post-war Serbian society, the memory is collectively “denied” because of Serbs’ stigmatization, and an increase of violent behavior and a greater incorporation of symboli…
Violence against Women and Femicide: an analysis on the murders of foreign women in Italy
2022
AbstractThis paper presents the results of a research on the representations of femicide in the judicial field, in Italy. The use of the term femicide is analysed through the lens of the normative process, examining its social meanings and questioning its political and economic anchoring using the “juridical field” model (Bourdieu 1986). The essay is based on a wide theoretical framework. It starts by highlighting the problems evoked by the term ‘femicide’ (Corradi, et al. 2016; Radford and Russell 1992); its declension in criminal law and jurisprudence through its coding in specific types of offence (Merli 2015). The topics of power and imbalance between the sexes (Goffman 1977) are analys…
Sex roles and sex ratios in animals
2022
In species with separate sexes, females and males often differ in their morphology, physiology and behaviour. Such sex-specific traits are functionally linked to variation in reproductive competition, mate choice and parental care, which have all been linked to sex roles. At the 150th anniversary of Darwin's theory on sexual selection, the question of why patterns of sex roles vary within and across species remains a key topic in behavioural and evolutionary ecology. New theoretical, experimental and comparative evidence suggests that variation in the adult sex ratio (ASR) is a key driver of variation in sex roles. Here, we first define and discuss the historical emergence of the sex role c…
L'educazione tra identità sessuale e identità di genere
2017
This essay aims to describe the notions of sexual and gender identity by exploring its educational meanings. It starts by offering definitions to common terms such as sex and gender. In particular, sexual identity is determined by the biological and physical differences between male and female, the biological explanation doesn't allow ample possibility to interpretation or individual choices. On the other hand, gender identity indicates masculinity and femininity as socially devised categories. In some aspect, gender and sex are very different concepts, so that we can suggest that sex is linked to anatomical, biological and physiological characteristics, whereas gender is related to roles a…
Looking back into trans persons’ experiences in heteronormative secondary physical education contexts
2017
ABSTRACTBackground: School is one of the primary settings where non-gender conformer children and adolescents emerge as vulnerable groups at high risk of suffering violence and harassment. Within schooling contexts, embodied experiences in physical education (PE) may become particularly problematic for trans students. However, there is little research focusing on trans persons’s experiences in PE. The purpose of this paper is to gather memories and impressions of a group of adult trans persons on their experiences in secondary PE.Theoretical framework: The concept of heteronormativity is used as a theoretical framework to provide insights and understanding to trans persons’s experiences in …
'Apparently, women don't know how to operate doors': a corpus-based analysis of women stereotypes in the tv series 3rd Rock from the Sun
2017
This paper explores how women stereotypes are discursively evaluated in the TV sitcom 3 rd Rock from the Sun by paying attention to the societal, cultural and ideological values they convey. Following recent trends for the study of television series (Bednarek, 2010), the analysis is both qualitative and quantitative, adopting a Corpus- Assisted Discourse Analysis approach (Baker, 2006; Partington, 2004). The contextualised analysis of words that refer to women confirms that the sitcom writers of 3 rd Rock from the Sun purposefully resort to stereotyping as a verbal strategy to create humour while conveying negative attitudes towards women.
Narcissism and the Strategic Pursuit of Short-Term Mating:Universal Links across 11 World Regions of the International Sexuality Description Project-2
2017
Previous studies have documented links between sub-clinical narcissism and the active pursuit of short-term mating strategies (e.g., unrestricted sociosexuality, marital infidelity, mate poaching). Nearly all of these investigations have relied solely on samples from Western cultures. In the current study, responsesfrom a cross-cultural survey of 30,470 people across 53 nations spanning 11 world regions (North America, Central/South America, Northern Europe, Western Europe, Eastern Europe, Southern Europe, Middle East, Africa, Oceania, Southeast Asia, and East Asia) were used to evaluate whether narcissism (as measured by the Narcissistic Personality Inventory; NPI) was universally associat…
The individuals’ interest in preventing everyday accidents and crises : A Swedish explorative study of the importance of motivation
2014
This explorative study presents an empirical examination of the connection between motivation and the measures individuals take to prevent everyday accidents and prepare for crises. Positional factors (age and gender) and situational factors (education, size of locality, and household composition) are included because the literature highlights their importance. The study used data gathered in a 2010/2011 poll of randomly selected Swedish residents aged 16–75 (N = 2000; 44.8% response rate). A factor analysis reduced the theoretical model for situational motivation (Guay, Vallerand, & Blanchard, 2000) from four to two dimensions: motivation and amotivation. Subsequent regression analyses sta…
Didattica e differenze di genere in alunni di 8-12 anni
2013
