Experimental study of low-voltage surge protection device response in realistic systems
2008
Experimental results on low-voltage surge protection under fast pulses in realistic wiring systems are presented. A fast voltage pulse generator is designed to provide fast voltage pulses with short steep fronts. The effective residual voltage of protected equipment is then investigated and compared with simulation results.
A Virtual Milling Machine Model to Generate Machine-Monitoring Data for Predictive Analytics
2015
Real data from manufacturing processes are essential to create useful insights for decision-making. However, acquiring real manufacturing data can be expensive and time consuming. To address this issue, we implement a virtual milling machine model to generate machine monitoring data from process plans. MTConnect is used to report the monitoring data. This paper presents (1) the characteristics and specification of milling machine tools, (2) the architecture for implementing the virtual milling machine model, and (3) the integration with a simulation environment for extending to a virtual shop floor model. This paper also includes a case study to explain how to use the virtual milling machin…
Wind Turbine Mechanical Characteristics and Grid Parameters Influence on the Transient Voltage Stability of a Fixed Speed Wind Turbine
2008
This paper describes the effect of wind turbine mechanical characteristic of construction and grid parameters on the transient voltage stability of a fixed speed wind turbine (FSWT) connected to a simple grid. The model of FSWT has been developed in Matlab/Simulink. Using this model, a three-phase fault is applied close to the wind turbine (WT) and cleared by disconnecting the faulted line. The effects of mechanical construction of WT and of grid parameters on the voltage stability of this simple case are evaluated and discussed. The considered parameters are the inertia coefficient of the WT, the short-circuit power at the connection bus, the hub-generator resonant frequency, the wind spee…
Effects of Electrical Parameters of Induction Generator on the Transient Voltage Stability of a Fixed Speed Wind Turbine
2008
This paper describes the effect of electrical parameters of the induction generator on the transient voltage stability of a fixed speed wind turbine connected to a simple grid; the dynamic behavior of a wind turbine connected to the grid is examined. The model of the fixed speed wind turbine has been developed in the simulation tool Matlab/Simulink. Itpsilas composed by the induction generator, the shaft system, the aerodynamic model of the wind turbine rotor and the pitch control system. Using this model, a three-phases fault is applied close to the wind turbine and cleared by disconnecting the faulted line. The effect of different electrical parameters of the induction generator on the vo…
Experimental Test and Simulations on a Linear Generator-Based Prototype of a Wave Energy Conversion System Designed with a Reliability-Oriented Appro…
2017
In this paper, we propose a reliability-oriented design of a linear generator-based prototype of a wave energy conversion (WEC), useful for the production of hydrogen in a sheltered water area like Mediterranean Sea. The hydrogen production has been confirmed by a lot of experimental testing and simulations. The system design is aimed to enhance the robustness and reliability and is based on an analysis of the main WEC failures reported in literature. The results of this analysis led to some improvements that are applied to a WEC system prototype for hydrogen production and storage. The proposed WEC system includes the electrical linear generator, the power conversion system, and a sea-wate…
Sulphate Removal from Water by Carbon Residue from Biomass Gasification: Effect of Chemical Modification Methods on Sulphate Removal Efficiency
2016
Sulphate removal from mine water is a problem because traditional chemical precipitation does not remove all sulphates. In addition, it creates lime sediment as a secondary waste. Therefore, an inexpensive and environmental-friendly sulphate removal method is needed in addition to precipitation. In this study, carbon residues from a wood gasification process were repurposed as precursors to a suitable sorbent for SO42- ion removal. The raw material was modified using ZnCl2, BaCl2, CaCl2, FeCl3, or FeCl2. Carbon residues modified with FeCl3 were selected for further consideration because the removal efficiency toward sulphate was the highest. Batch sorption experiments were performed to eval…
Pacemaker therapy in premature children with high degree AV block.
1998
The smallest pacemaker pulse generator and a steroid-eluting bipolar epicardial lead were implanted in two premature children with symptomatic AV block. Stable capture threshold and high amplitude evoked response electrogram resulted in normal function of the pacemaker Autocapture algorithm, which adjusts output 0.3 V above the measured capture threshold. Autocapture had previously been used only with endocardial leads. Longer-term observation is required.
Random Walk in a N-cube Without Hamiltonian Cycle to Chaotic Pseudorandom Number Generation: Theoretical and Practical Considerations
2017
Designing a pseudorandom number generator (PRNG) is a difficult and complex task. Many recent works have considered chaotic functions as the basis of built PRNGs: the quality of the output would indeed be an obvious consequence of some chaos properties. However, there is no direct reasoning that goes from chaotic functions to uniform distribution of the output. Moreover, embedding such kind of functions into a PRNG does not necessarily allow to get a chaotic output, which could be required for simulating some chaotic behaviors. In a previous work, some of the authors have proposed the idea of walking into a $\mathsf{N}$-cube where a balanced Hamiltonian cycle has been removed as the basis o…
Concepts for medium-high to high temperature thermoelectric heat-to-electricity conversion: a review of selected materials and basic considerations o…
2015
Within the last decade, novel materials concepts and nanotechnology have resulted in a great increase of the conversion efficiency of thermoelectric materials. Despite this, a mass market for thermoelectric heat-to-electricity conversion is yet to be opened up. One reason for this is that the transfer of the lab records into fabrication techniques which enable thermoelectric generator modules is very challenging. By closing the gap between record lab values and modules, broad industrial applications may become feasible. In this review, we compare three classes of materials, all designed for medium-high to high temperature applications in the field of waste heat recovery: skutterudites, half…
Multilevel pattern generation by GaN laser lithography: an application to beam shaper fabrication
2006
The new GaN lasers represent a unique combination of compactness, reliability, energy efficiency, and short wavelength. With respect to the previous state of the art in direct laser write lithography, based on gas lasers, this is resulting in a breakthrough, and is opening the way to real desktop micropatterning. The field of diffractive optics can immediately benefit by the availability of a new breed of pattern generators, based on such sources, mainly for fast turnaround device development. This paper presents the technical advantages involved in the use of 405 nm GaN lasers for one-step multilevel patterning. Beam modulation, exposure control and overall process strategy are discussed. …
