Simulation of mid-IR amplification in Er3+-doped chalcogenide microstructured optical fiber

2009

International audience; This paper deals with the design of an erbium doped microstructured optical fiber (MOF) amplifier operating in the mid-infrared (mid-IR) wavelength range, more precisely around 4.5 µm wavelength. A homemade numerical code which solves the rate equations and the power propagation equations has been ad hoc developed to theoretically investigate the feasibility of mid-IR MOF amplifier. On the basis of the measured energy level transition parameters of a Er3+-doped Ga5Ge20Sb10S65 chalcogenide glass, the amplifier feasibility is demonstrated exhibiting high gain and low noise figure.

Simulation of the dynamics of hard ellipsoids

2008

We study a system of uniaxial hard ellipsoids by molecular dynamics simulations, changing both the aspect-ratio X-0 (X-0 = a/b, where a is the length of the revolution axis and b is the length of the two other axes) and the packing fraction phi. We calculate the translational and rotational mean squared displacements, the translational D-trans and the rotational D-rot diffusion coefficients and the associated isodiffusivity lines in the phi - X-0 plane. For the first time, we characterize the cage effect through the logarithmic time derivative of log and log . These quantities exhibit a minimum if the system is supercooled and we show that, consistently with our previous findings, for large…

Covariate adjusted censored gaussian lasso estimator

2021

The covariate adjusted glasso is one of the most used estimators for in- ferring genetic networks. Despite its diffusion, there are several fields in applied research where the limits of detection of modern measurement technologies make the use of this estimator theoretically unfounded, even when the assumption of a multivariate Gaussian distribution is satisfied. In this paper we propose an extension to censored data.

A computational method to estimate sparse multiple Gaussian graphical models

2012

In recent years several researchers have proposed the use of the Gaussian graphical model defined on a high dimensional setting to explore the dependence relationships between random variables. Standard methods, usually proposed in literature, are based on the use of a specific penalty function, such as the L1-penalty function. In this paper our aim is to estimate and compare two or more Gaussian graphical models defined in a high dimensional setting. In order to accomplish our aim, we propose a new computational method, based on glasso method, which lets us to extend the notion of p-value.

Gender differences in career advancements in Italian universities over the last 20 years

2023

This article deals with gender differences in Italian universities in the last 20 years in terms of career advancements. Data are taken from the MUR (Ministry of University and Research) archive. In Italy, career advancements are still much easier for men, even if the gender gap has slowly narrowed in the last decades. The novelty of this paper is the analysis through event-history analysis models on the time elapsed to receive a promotion (from assistant to associate professor and from associate to full professor). The event-history analysis applied to career advancements has revealed that women take, on average, about one and a half more years than men to advance, with some differences am…

IFN? expression inhibits LHBs storage disease and ground glass hepatocyte appearance, but exacerbates inflammation and apoptosis in HBV surface prote…

2006

BACKGROUND/AIMS Interferon gamma (IFNgamma) controls hepatitis B virus replication. As systemic application may cause severe adverse effects, approaches of liver-directed IFNgamma gene therapy may represent an attractive alternative for treatment of chronic viral hepatitis B and thus needs testing in vivo in suitable animal models. METHODS We therefore crossbred Alb-1HBV transgenic mice overexpressing the large HBV surface protein (LHBs) in their livers and developing LHBs storage disease and ground glass hepatocyte appearance with SAP-IFNgamma transgenic animals previously shown to exhibit constitutive hepatic IFNgamma expression, and analyzed the resulting double-transgenic offspring. Effect of pressure and temperature on viscosity of a borosilicate glass

2018

International audience; During industrial glass production processes, the actual distribution of stress components in the glass during scribing remains, to date, poorly quantified, and thus continues to be challenging to model numerically. In this work, we experimentally quantified the effect of pressure and temperature on the viscosity of SCHOTT N-BK7 glass, by performing in situ deformation experiments at temperatures between 550 and 595 °C and confining pressures between 100 MPa and 300 MPa. Experiments were performed at constant displacement rates to produce almost constant strain rates between 9.70 × 10 −6 s-1 and 4.98 × 10-5 s-1. The resulting net axial stresses range from 81 MPa to 8…

Physical and mechanical properties of sustainable hydraulic mortar based on marble slurry with waste glass

2021

This paper aims to propose and characterize a sustainable hydraulic mortar entirely obtained by the reuse of waste materials, with marble slurry coming from quarries in the north-western Sicily and glass powder coming from a waste collection plant in Marsala (Province of Trapani). The first was used as raw material to produce the mortar binder by a kilning and slaking process, while the second was used as a pozzolanic additive. The chemical and morphological characterization of the marble slurry was done by XRD, FTIR, STA and SEM analyses. Glass powder was analyzed through particle size distribution measurements, XRD and standard pozzolanic tests. Hydraulic mortars constituted by slaked lim…
