Searching for repetitions in biological networks: methods, resources and tools

We present here a compact overview of the data, models and methods proposed for the analysis of biological networks based on the search for significant repetitions. In particular, we concentrate on three problems widely studied in the literature: ‘network alignment’, ‘network querying’ and ‘network motif extraction’. We provide (i) details of the experimental techniques used to obtain the main types of interaction data, (ii) descriptions of the models and approaches introduced to solve such problems and (iii) pointers to both the available databases and software tools. Energy balance and life cycle assessment of small size residential solar heating and cooling systems equipped with adsorption chillers

Abstract Solar heating and cooling systems for space heating and cooling are experiencing a growing trend and interest. However, the actual energy and environmental performance of small/medium size installations is not clearly foreseeable. In this paper, an analysis of such systems using adsorption chillers in different European climates is presented. Solar systems have been simulated in TRNSYS and compared to a conventional system employing a vapour compression unit. The results have been used for a Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) study, determining the potential impact during the whole life of the system, from raw materials supply to its end-of-life. Variations in photosynthesis still cause substantial uncertainties in predicting photosynthetic CO2 uptake rates and monitoring plant stress. Changes in actual photosynthesis that are not related to greenness of vegetation are difficult to measure by reflectance based optical remote sensing techniques. Several activities are underway to evaluate the sun-induced fluorescence signal on the ground and on a coarse spatial scale using space-borne imaging spectrometers. Air pollution has important implications on human health and associated external costs to society, and is closely related to climate change. This contribution tries to assess the impacts of present (1996–2015) and future (2071–2100 under RCP8.5) air pollution on several cardiovascular and respiratory pathologies and to estimate the difference in the costs associated to those health impacts on European population. Nonostante uno sforzo diffuso nella ideazione di indicatori, rimane fondamentale da considerare non solo la dimensione sociale e umana, ma anche la posizione della città (sud/nord del mondo) e le sue parti (centro/periferia).
