Impact of Glucose-Lowering Medications on Cardiovascular and Metabolic Risk in Type 2 Diabetes

Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (T2DM) is associated with a high risk of atherosclerotic cardiovascular (CV) disease. Among the well-known pathophysiologic factors, crucial roles are played by endothelial dysfunction (caused by oxidative stress and inflammation hyperglycemia-linked), increased activity of nuclear factor kB, altered macrophage polarization, and reduced synthesis of resident endothelial progenitor cells. As consequence, a potentially rapid progression of the atherosclerotic disease with a higher propensity to unstable plaque is arguable, finally leading to significantly increased cardiovascular mortality. Background: Hemorrhages, cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) fistula and infections are the most challenging postoperative complications in Neurosurgery. In this study, we report our preliminary results using a fully autologous fibrin sealant agent, the Vivostat ® system, in achieving hemostasis and CSF leakage repair during cranio‑cerebral procedures. Methods: From January 2012 to March 2014, 77 patients were studied prospectively and data were collected and analyzed. Abstract A transition in the bacterial growth rate to below maximum was found to be an optimum parameter of cellular physiology to increase the activity of acetohydroxy acid synthase, a regulatory enzyme in l -valine synthesis, and amino acid overproduction by Corynebacterium glutamicum ATCC 13032 recombinants under batch and fed-batch cultivation conditions. Sensory and Chemical Analysis of Fractions Obtained by Gel Permeation of Water-Soluble Comte Cheese Extracts

The pure water extraction of Comte cheese solubles and their chromatographic separation facilitate sensory analysis experiments with the fractions directly collected from the column. Two extracts, one obtained after ultrafiltration, the other after chromatography on Sephadex G25, have been separated on Toyopearl HW-40S. The sensory evaluation of the obtained fractions shows in the two cases that some fractions have interesting flavors. However, physicochemical analysis shows that organoleptic characteristics are linked more to the presence of amino acids and salts than to the presence of peptides. Effects of compost input and tillage intensity on soil microbial biomass and activity under Mediterranean conditions

Organic amendment and tillage reduction are two common practices to contrast soil organic matter decline, thus promoting sustainable cropping and carbon sequestration. In a horticultural land use system under Mediterranean climate, we evaluated the 9-year effects of two compost inputs (15 and 30 t ha−1 y−1, low and high input, respectively) and two tillage intensities (intensive and reduced) on soil macronutrients concentration, microbial biomass and activity. A l-glutamate-responsive delivery system based on enzyme-controlled self-immolative arylboronate-gated nanoparticles

We report herein a L-glutamate (L-Glu)-responsive delivery system. It consists of Janus Au–mesoporous silica (MS) nanoparticles functionalized with L-glutamate oxidase on the Au face and with self-immolative arylboronate derivatives as caps on the MS face. The MS face is additionally loaded with a cargo. The delivery paradigm is based on the recognition of L-Glu by the enzyme and the subsequent formation of H2O2, which induces the cleavage of the self-immolative gate and the uncapping of the pores. Given the importance of L-Glu as a key neurotransmitter, we hope that these findings will help in designing new therapeutic strategies for nervous system diseases.

The marine sponge Suberites domuncula was used to identify early markers for thermal stress. Cubes from sponges have been kept for 30 min at 31°C (10 °C higher than the ambient temperature). After this treatment the sponge cubes were kept again at 21°C. To demonstrate that the animals reacted to the elevated temperature, the expression of heat shock protein (HSP) was determined. Using an antibody raised against HSP70, it was found by Western blotting that the animals specifically express a 45 kDa polypeptide after heat treatment. Oral glutathione increases hepatic glutathione and prevents acetaminophen toxicity

Administration of oral glutathione (GSH) increases hepatic GSH levels in fasted rats, in mice treated with GSH depletors such as diethylmaleate and in mice treated with high doses of paracetamol. An increase in hepatic GSH levels after administration of oral GSH does not occur in animals treated with buthionine suphoximine, an inhibitor of GSH synthesis. Administration of oral GSH leads to an increase in the concentration of L-cysteine, a precursor of GSH, in portal blood plasma. Oral administration of L-methio-nine to fasted rats produced a significant decrease of hepatic ATP, but not in fed rats. Introduction The idea that the cells might suffer from reductive rather than oxidative stress and that such stress may be relevant in pathophysiology has gained momentum. Aim We aimed at studying markers of oxidative stress and damage as well as the expression of antioxidant enzymes in a swine model of acute myocardial infarction (AMI) followed by reperfusion. The objective of this work was to conduct a systematic review of studies published from 1970 to date related to the gluten-free, casein-free diet in autism spectrum disorder patients.
