Validity and reliability of the Italian version of the Chronic Liver Disease Questionnaire (CLDQ-I) for the assessment of health-related quality of l…

2005

Background.: The Chronic Liver Disease Questionnaire is a specific health-related quality of life assessment designed for patients with liver diseases. Aim.: The aim of this paper is to report on the validity, reliability and sensitivity to change of the Italian version (Chronic Liver Disease Questionnaire-I) in subjects with HCV infection. Subjects.: The Chronic Liver Disease Questionnaire-I was administered to 350 subjects with HCV infection together with the World Health Organization Quality of Life Assessment, abbreviated version, a generic quality of life assessment. Methods.: The instrument was translated from English, backtranslated and reviewed in focus groups in the framework of a …

Happy heart syndrome. frequency, characteristics, and outcome of takotsubo syndrome triggered by positive life events

2021

Background: The association with a preceding stressor is a characteristic feature of takotsubo syndrome (TTS). Negative emotions before TTS are common and led to the popular term "broken heart syndrome." In contrast, pleasant triggers ("happy heart syndrome") are rare and are scarcely investigated. Objectives: The authors analyzed the frequency, clinical characteristics, and prognostic implications of positive emotional stressors in the multicenter GEIST (GErman-Italian-Spanish Takotsubo) Registry. Methods: Patients enrolled in the registry were categorized according to their stressors. This analysis compared patients with pleasant emotional events with patients with negative emotional even…

Brain representation of action observation in human infants.

2015

Imitative learning has long been established as extremely important for early development. However, neural mechanisms involved in early imitative behaviours are still areas of active research. Neurophysiological and brain-imaging studies have been recently performed that provide initial evidence of brain activation associated with action observation in the first months of life. In this review we examine all studies exploring the effects of action observation on brain function assessed by means of non-invasive brain-mapping techniques. Seventeen papers were selected as a result of our literature search. The strongest evidence for a neural signature of action observation comes from studies ex…

Treatment of pulmonary embolism.

2015

International audience; The treatment of pulmonary embolism is going to be deeply modified by the development of Direct Oral Anticoagulants (DOACs). There are currently three anti-Xa factors (rivaroxaban, apixaban, edoxaban) and one anti-IIa factor (dabigatran) labeled by the FDA and the EMA. All these drugs are direct anticoagulant, orally effective, without the need for adaptation to hemostasis test. As kidney excretion is involved for all of them, they are contra-indicated in patients with severe renal failure (creatinine clearance<30mL/min according to Cockcroft & Gault formula). All the anti-Xa factor drugs are metabolized by liver cytochromes and then contra-indicated in case of liver…

Walk the Line. The Surgical Highways to the Craniovertebral Junction in Endoscopic Approaches: A Historical Perspective

2018

Background We compiled a comprehensive literature review on the anatomic and clinical results of endoscopic approaches to the craniocervical junction (CVJ) to better contribute to identify the best strategy. Methods An updated literature review was performed in the PubMed, OVID, and Google Scholar medical databases, using the terms “Craniovertebral junction,” “Transoral approach,” “Transnasal approach,” “Transcervical approach,” “Endoscopic endonasal approach,” “Endoscopic transoral approach,” “Endoscopic transcervical approach.” Clinical series, anatomic studies, and comparative studies were reviewed. Results Pure endonasal and cervical endoscopic approaches still have some disadvantages, …

Cardiorenal syndrome type 4: From chronic kidney disease to cardiovascular impairment

2016

Cardiorenal syndrome type 4 (CRS type 4), or chronic renocardiac syndrome, has been defined as "chronic abnormalities in renal function leading to cardiac disease" and recognizes the extreme burden of cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk in patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD). CKD is common and increasingly recognized as a risk factor for CVD. Even though the treatment for CVD has dramatically improved over the past decades, it still takes responsibility for up to 50% of deaths in CKD patients. For this reason, patients with CKD should be thoroughly evaluated for cardiovascular risk factors that require careful management, given the significant burden of CRS type 4 on the healthcare sys…

Visual and Hearing Impairment Are Associated With Delirium in Hospitalized Patients: Results of a Multisite Prevalence Study

2021

Objective: Sensory deficits are important risk factors for delirium but have been investigated in single-center studies and single clinical settings. This multicenter study aims to evaluate the association between hearing and visual impairment or bi-sensory impairment (visual and hearing impairment) and delirium. Design: Cross-sectional study nested in the 2017 "Delirium Day" project. Setting and participants: Patients 65 years and older admitted to acute hospital medical wards, emergency departments, rehabilitation wards, nursing homes, and hospices in Italy. Methods: Delirium was assessed with the 4AT (a short tool for delirium assessment) and sensory deficits with a clinical evaluation. …
