Adhesion and adhesion hysteresis of mica surfaces covered with bola-amphipiles in dry and humid air

1998

Abstract Bola-amphiphiles with spherical hydrophilic chinuclidinium head groups form laterally ordered monolayers on mica by adsorption from solution. To measure the surface adhesion, JKR-type compression/decompression cycles have been performed with the surface forces apparatus (SFA). In an inert atmosphere, the adhesion energy on increasing the contact area is much lower than predicted by wetting experiments. Furthermore, the pronounced adhesion hysteresis varies from sample to sample in a wide range, indicating a defect-rich surface. On increase of the relative humidity (rh), the reproducibility improves and the values for the adhesion energy measured on compression and decompression con…

New aspects of scattering and absorbing properties of atmospheric aerosol particles

1972

Abstract Knowledge of the scattering and absorbing processes of the atmospheric aerosol particles in the solar wavelength range is necessary in order to calculate the energy balance of the atmosphere. Both of these depend on the relative humidity of the air. Until now little was known of the behavior of the particles. This paper shows experimental and theoretical results of the real and imaginary part of the refractive index of the aerosol particles at different relative humidities.

Effect of modified starch or maltodextrin incorporation on the barrier and mechanical properties, moisture sensitivity and appearance of soy protein …

2012

Abstract This work aimed to study the effect of starch (acetylated di-starch phosphate and starch acetate) and maltodextrin (DE 10.2 and DE 15.6) on the properties of soy protein isolate (SPI) films. Films were cast from heated (70 °C for 20 min) alkaline (pH 10) aqueous solutions of soy protein isolate (8%) containing glycerol (50% of SPI) as a plasticizer and starch or maltodextrin (20% of SPI). For all types of films, water vapor sorption kinetics during 24 h at 25 °C and 75% relative humidity (RH), diffusion coefficient of water vapor, water vapor permeability at 25 °C for two relative humidity differentials (40–75 and 40–100%), tensile strength and elongation at break, color and micros…

Effect of environmental humidity and coating on aroma transfer through treated papers

2012

Abstract Coupled transfers of aroma compounds and water vapour were investigated by varying the relative humidity gradient of storage (50% or 90%) of two paper packaging at 25 °C. These papers differed in their coating surface: both were identically impregnated then supercalendered, and only one was twice coated on both sides with a synthetic barrier substance. Permeability and solubility coefficients were determined. The coating treatment was more effective to decrease the permeabilities of water vapour and ethyl ester than the effect of RH. On the contrary, the RH modified the water content of the treated papers and affected more strongly their permeability and solubility to cis-3-hexenol…

Evaluating the protecting effects of two consolidants applied on Pietra di Lecce limestone: A neutronographic study

2020

Abstract In this work a combined laboratory-based and neutronographic investigation was carried out on a type of limestone, known as Pietra di Lecce stone, widely used in Italian Baroque as construction material. The limestone was treated with two different commercially-available coatings, namely nanosilica and nanolime, and artificially weathered by salt crystallization and temperature/relative humidity jumps. The aim was to provide an experimental evidence of the protective and consolidating effectiveness of the two treatments by looking at the water absorption process occurring inside the pore network of the analyzed stones. The analysis of the wetting front position revealed significant…

Long-lived contrails and convective cirrus above the tropical tropopause

2017

Abstract. This study has two objectives: (1) it characterizes contrails at very low temperatures and (2) it discusses convective cirrus in which the contrails occurred. (1) Long-lived contrails and cirrus from overshooting convection are investigated above the tropical tropopause at low temperatures down to −88 °C from measurements with the Russian high-altitude research aircraft M-55 Geophysica, as well as related observations during the SCOUT-O3 field experiment near Darwin, Australia, in 2005. A contrail was observed to persist below ice saturation at low temperatures and low turbulence in the stratosphere for nearly 1 h. The contrail occurred downwind of the decaying convective system H…

A simple model to estimate the daily value of the regional maximum evapotranspiration from satellite temperature and albedo images

1987

Abstract We have tried an adaptation of the radiation model proposed by FAO, applicable in any area, for the estimation of the regional maximum evapotranspiration, ET, from temperature and albedo images obtained from a satellite. This model is based on the relationships ETm = k cETo ETo = A + BR g + CR g Ta max where k c is the crop coefficient, ETo is the maximum evapotranspiration of the reference crop (green grass), Rg is the global radiation obtained from satellite albedo images, T a max is the maximum temperature of the air obtained from the near-midday satellite temperature and A, B and C are the empirical coefficients characteristic of each zone calculated for different intervals of …

Indoor air quality in schools of a highly polluted south Mediterranean area

2019

This study aimed at surveying lower secondary schools in southern Italy, in a highly polluted area. A community close to an industrial area and three villages in rural areas was investigated. Indoor temperature, relative humidity (RH), gaseous pollutants (CO 2 and NO 2 ), selected biological pollutants in indoor dust, and the indoor/outdoor mass concentration and elemental composition of PM 2.5 were ascertained. Temperature and RH were within, or close to, the comfort range, while CO 2 frequently exceeded the threshold of 1000 ppm, indicating inadequate air exchange rate. In all the classrooms, median NO 2 levels were above the WHO threshold value. Dermatophagoides p. allergen concentration…

Simplified models for the performance evaluation of desiccant wheel dehumidification

2002

In the present communication, simple models have been presented to evaluate the performance of rotary desiccant wheels based on different kind of solid desiccants e.g. silica gel and LiCl. The first part of the paper presents ‘Model 54’ which is developed for silica gel desiccant rotor. The model has been derived from the interpolation of experimental data obtained from the industry and the correlations have been developed for predicting outlet temperature and absolute humidity. The ‘Model 54’ consists of 54 coefficients corresponding to each correlation for outlet absolute humidity and temperature and it is found that the model predicts very well the performance of silica gel desiccant rot…

Powder X-Ray Diffraction Investigation of Xylazine Hydrochloride Solid Phase Transformation Kinetics

2013

The kinetics of the solid-state phase transformation of xylazine hydrochloride form X to A has been investigated using powder X-ray diffraction and differential thermal analysis. Three different kinetic models have been used to describe transition kinetics: the Avrami–Erofeev equation, the Cardew equation, and the methodology for simulation of solid-state phase transition kinetics by the combination of nucleation and nuclei growth processes. The latter has been recently developed and has been tested in this paper for the case of a real solid-state transition. The relative humidity, mechanical pressure, temperature, and sample-preparation effect on phase-transition kinetics have been investi…
