Deterioration of Property of Aluminum Alloys (EN AW-1050A, EN AW-5754 and EN AW-6060) by Absorbed Hydrogen
2022
The paper reports the results of research on the effect of hydrogen penetration on the variations in the mechanical properties of selected aluminum alloys. As a result of the study, it can be observed that such variations contribute to the deterioration of mechanical properties, which, in turn, contributes to shortening the reliability time associated with the operation of aluminum alloy structures. The analysis involved structural aluminum alloys: EN AW-1050A, EN AW-5754 and EN AW-6060. Tensile strength and impact strength were measured. It was demonstrated that the absorption of hydrogen by the analyzed alloys led to the deterioration of mechanical properties of aluminum alloys. The perfo…
A simple procedure to improve the pressure evaluation in hydrodynamic context using the SPH
2009
In literature, it is well know that the Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics method can be affected by numerical noise on the pressure field when dealing with liquids. This can be highly dangerous when an SPH code is dynamically coupled with a structural solver. In this work a simple procedure is proposed to improve the computation of the pressure distribution in the dynamics of liquids. Such a procedure is based on the use of a density diffusion term in the equation for the mass conservation. This diffusion is a pure numerical effect, similar to the well known artificial viscosity originally proposed in SPH method to smooth out the shock discontinuities. As the artificial viscosity, the density…
Energy and environmental life cycle assessment of an institutional catering service: An Italian case study
2019
Food production is recognised as one of the major drivers for global environmental pressure. In the last years, changes in consumption models result in an increasing population consuming food out of home that pose the catering service sector at the centre of the European Union policies aimed at improving the environmental sustainability of the food sector. In this framework, better technical knowledge on the environmental impacts of catering service is essential in order to identify potential actions towards a more sustainable food sector. This article presents an environmental assessment of a school catering service operating in Italy and delivering approximately 2,518,128 meals per year. …
Addressing sustainable food management in hotels: proposing a framework and examining hotel groups
2021
Purpose Sustainable food practices have been recognised as a key issue in efforts to improve and report sustainable tourism practices, given the importance of the social, environmental and economic impacts of the food industry throughout its entire chain of production – from farm to fork. From this standpoint, the aim of the present paper is to propose a comprehensive framework for reporting or making decisions concerning sustainable food management in hotels, taking into account the various facets of the food supply chain.Design/methodology/approach Several dimensions are proposed for dealing with sustainable food management, involving all aspects of food supply chains that may be relevant…
Massenspektrometrische Untersuchungen an 4-[(2-Amino-ethylmercapto)-methyl]-imidazolen
1981
Mass Spectrometry of 4-[(2-Aminoethylthiomethyl]imidazoles 7 substituted 4-[(2-aminoethylthio)methyl]imidazoles were investigated by electron impact mass spectrometry. The main fragmentation paths are described and the characteristic fragments are tabulated.
Comparing air quality indices aggregated by pollutant
2011
In this paper a new aggregate Air Quality Index (AQI) useful for describing the global air pollution situation for a given area is proposed. The index, unlike most of currently used AQIs, takes into account the combined effects of all the considered pollutants to human health. Its good performance, tested by means of a simulation plan, is confirmed by a comparison with two other indices proposed in the literature, one of which is based on the Relative Risk of daily mortality, considering an application to real data.
Impact of gadolinium on the structure and magnetic properties of nanocrystalline powders of iron oxides produced by the extraction-pyrolytic method
2020
The work has been done in frame of the TransFerr project. It has received funding from the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation program under the Marie Sklodowska-Curie grant agreement No. 778070. This research was also supported by Latvian Research Council project lzp-2018/1-0214. A.I.P. appreciates support from the Estonian Research Council grant (PUT PRG619).
Identifying Pathways to Computer Science : The Long-Term Impact of Short-Term Game Programming Outreach Interventions
2019
Short-term outreach interventions are conducted to raise young students’ awareness of the computer science (CS) field. Typically, these interventions are targeted at K–12 students, attempting to encourage them to study CS in higher education. This study is based on a series of extra-curricular outreach events that introduced students to the discipline of computing, nurturing creative computational thinking through problem solving and game programming. To assess the long-term impact of this campaign, the participants were contacted and interviewed two to five years after they had attended an outreach event. We studied how participating in the outreach program affected the students’ perceptio…
Injury Evaluation in Teenage Cyclist-Vehicle Crash by Multibody Simulation
2014
Information on impact locations, impact situations and cyclist and pedestrian dynamics in impacts with passenger cars is fundamental for the development of effective solutions to improve cyclist and pedestrian protection. Accidentology research shows that cyclists typically have a higher impact location than the pedestrian, with a larger share of injuries from the windscreen area. Majority of accidents in Palermo, in the last years, happens at urban street (84%) that involve teenager (6.4%). In this paper simulation study captures dynamics and injuries to head and chest for teenager between a generic bicycle and a car model that is suitable for pedestrian or cyclist safety. Multibody simula…
Extraordinary rocks from the peak ring of the Chicxulub impact crater: P-wave velocity, density, and porosity measurements from IODP/ICDP Expedition …
2018
Joint International Ocean Discovery Program and International Continental Scientific Drilling Program Expedition 364 drilled into the peak ring of the Chicxulub impact crater. We present P-wave velocity, density, and porosity measurements from Hole M0077A that reveal unusual physical properties of the peak-ring rocks. Across the boundary between post-impact sedimentary rock and suevite (impact melt-bearing breccia) we measure a sharp decrease in velocity and density, and an increase in porosity. Velocity, density, and porosity values for the suevite are 2900–3700 m/s, 2.06–2.37 g/cm3, and 20–35%, respectively. The thin (25 m) impact melt rock unit below the suevite has velocity measurements…
