Laminated carbonate deposits in Roman aqueducts: Origin, processes and implications

2013

Carbonate deposits in Roman aqueducts of Patara and Aspendos (southern Turkey) were studied to analyse the nature of their regular layering. Optical microscopy and electron-backscattered diffraction results show an alternation of dense, coarsely crystalline, translucent laminae composed of bundles and fans of elongate calcite crystals with their c-axes parallel to the long axis, and porous, fine-grained laminae with crystals at near-random orientation. The ?18O and ?13C data show a strong cyclicity and anti-correlation, whereby high and low ?18O values correspond to dense columnar and porous fine-grained laminae, respectively. Geochemical analyses show similar cyclic changes in carbonate co…

Interferon-α Abrogates Tolerance Induction by Human Tolerogenic Dendritic Cells

2011

Background Administration of interferon-α (IFN-α) represents an approved adjuvant therapy as reported for malignancies like melanoma and several viral infections. In malignant diseases, tolerance processes are critically involved in tumor progression. In this study, the effect of IFN-α on tolerance induction by human tolerogenic dendritic cells (DC) was analyzed. We focussed on tolerogenic IL-10-modulated DC (IL-10 DC) that are known to induce anergic regulatory T cells (iTregs). Methodology/Principal Findings IFN-α promoted an enhanced maturation of IL-10 DC as demonstrated by upregulation of the differentiation marker CD83 as well as costimulatory molecules. IFN-α treatment resulted in an…

SYNTHESIS AND PHOTOCHEMIOTHERAPEUTIC ACTIVITY OF THIOPYRANO[2,3-E]INDOL-2-ONES

2004

A series of derivatives of the new ring system thiopyrano[2,3-e]indol-2-one was prepared with the aim of obtaining new photochemotherapeutic drugs. Biological screenings were performed on this new class of photoactivable drugs and a strong antiproliferative effect was observed upon irradiation with UVA light. The compound bearing a methyl substituent at the pyrrole nitrogen resulted as the most interesting showing IC50 in the nanomolar range.

Are attachment dimensions associated with infertility-related stress in couples undergoing their first IVF treatment? A study on the individual and c…

2012

study question: Are attachment anxiety and avoidance dimensions in female and male partners in couples seeking infertility treat- ment associated with her and his infertility-related stress? summary answer: Attachment dimensions are significantly associated with several aspects of infertility stress in couples undergoing IVF treatment. what is known and what this paper adds: Attachment dimensions of anxiety and avoidance (where highly anxious individuals fear rejection and are preoccupied with maintaining proximity to their partner and highly avoidant individuals are uncomfortable with intimacy and prefer to maintain distance from their partner) may influence the well being of individuals u…

Serum luteinizing hormone in patients undergoing ovarian stimulation with gonadotropin-releasing hormone antagonists and recombinant follicle-stimula…

2004

The serum LH was determined on days 3, 6, and 8 of stimulation and on the day of hCG in 110 normogonadotropic patients undergoing controlled ovarian hyperstimulation (COH) for IVF induced with GnRH antagonists and recombinant FSH, creating three groups of patients according to Tukey's hinges (percentiles 25 and 75) for each determination. No differences were observed between the number of oocytes recovered or the fertilization, implantation, and pregnancy rates (PR) of the groups, although patients with high serum LH levels during stimulation showed significantly higher serum E2 levels on the day of hCG.

Moderate ovarian stimulation does not increase the incidence of human embryo chromosomal abnormalities in in vitro fertilization cycles.

2012

A high chromosomal abnormalities rate has been observed in human embryos derived from in vitro fertilization (IVF) treatments. The real incidence in natural cycles has been poorly studied, so whether this frequency may be induced by external factors, such as use of gonadotropins for ovarian stimulation, remains unknown. We conducted a prospective cohort study in a University-affiliated private infertility clinic with a comparison between unstimulated and stimulated ovarian cycles in the same women. Preimplantation genetic screening by fluorescence in situ hybridization was performed in all viable d 3 embryos. The primary objective was to compare the incidence of embryo chromosomal abnormaliti…

Time-dependent O2 consumption patterns determined optimal time ranges for selecting viable human embryos.

2012

Objective To evaluate correlations between metabolic activity and implantation potential of transferred embryos in a study based on oxygen (O 2 ) consumption (OC) measurements, because O 2 uptake is directly related to the capacity of an embryo to produce energy via adenosine triphosphate. Design Retrospective cohort study. Setting Infertility institute. Patient(s) Five hundred seventy-five injected oocytes in 56 first oocyte donation cycles with embryo transfer on day 3. Intervention(s) None. Main Outcome Measure(s) We analyzed embryo destination viability and implantation depending on the embryo OC rate obtained from 47,741 measurements (up to 85 measurements per embryo, 2–3 measurements …

PCOS and infertility. Metformin administration and ovulation induction in patients with reproductive failures. Preliminary data

2014

The aim of this study is to investigate the effects of the metformin administration in patients with previous reproductive failures. Inclusion criteria: 13 patients with chronic anovulation and PCOS, age < 38 years old, sterility not less than 2 years, C.C. resistance, conception failure in previous cycles with only r-FSH and negativity to the multiple miscarriages tests, absence of others infertility factors. Metformin administration started 2 months before the ovulation induction. Alternatively a spontaneous menstruation it was induced by progestin. Ovulation was performed with r-FSH and patients were invited to have sexual intercourse during the 48h after the HCG trigger. Luteal support …

Clinical management of endometrial receptivity.

2014

The endometrial window of implantation (WOI), the cycle days during which normal embryo implantation can occur, has generally been assumed to begin on cycle day 19 or 20 of an idealized 28 days cycle and last for 4 to 5 days. Noyes et al took the first steps in defining the WOI by establishing a set of morphological criteria to evaluate endometrial development and receptivity, but recent studies have invalidated their use in the routine evaluation of infertility. Based on greater than 10 years of extensive research, our group has developed a molecular diagnostic tool (the endometrial receptivity array [ERA] test) based on the specific transcriptomic signature that identifies the receptive e…
