The Downside of an Effective cART: The Immune Restoration Disease

2013

The prognosis of patients infected with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) type 1 has dramatically improved since the advent of the highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART), which have enabled sustained suppression of HIV replication and recovery of CD4+ T cells count [1-3]. However, many patients in resource-poor settings still start HAART at a late stage of HIV infection when they already have advanced immunodeficien‐ cy [4,5]. Immune reconstitution in HIV infected patients is characterized by replenishment of immune cells depleted directly or indirectly by HIV infection, by regeneration of primary and secondary lymphoid organs, by restoration of pathogen-specific T, B and NK cells an…

Anemia in Celiac Disease: Prevalence, Associated Clinical and Laboratory Features, and Persistence after Gluten-Free Diet

2022

Anemia is considered to be the most frequent extra-intestinal manifestation of Celiac Disease (CD). We assessed frequency, severity, morphologic features, and pathogenic factors of anemia in patients of the Sicilian Regional Network of Celiac Disease and attempted to identify putative pre-diet factors influencing anemia persistence. We retrospectively analyzed CD patients admitted to three centers between 2016–2020. 159 patients entered the study (129 females). More than half (54.7%) had mild-moderate, hypochromic and microcytic anemia, associated with below normal total serum iron and ferritin, indicative of iron deficiency anemia (IDA). One year after diagnosis, 134 patients were fo…

USING ROTATING SPRINKLER GUNS IN CENTRE‐PIVOT IRRIGATION SYSTEMS †

2019

The use of centre-pivot irrigation systems has significantly increased in the last few decades, since they are easier and less time-consuming to manage compared to other irrigation systems. Standard high-pressure impact sprinklers, low-pressure spray sprinklers or LEPA (Low Energy Precision Application) systems are usually combined with a centre-pivot irrigation system (CP-SYS). However, when applying waste water or with reclaimed effluents that are extremely dirty, small nozzle sizes that require CP-SYS could get plugged. As an alternative to common centre-pivot irrigation systems, this paper analyses the ‘geometry’ of areas irrigated by rotating sprinkler guns in a centre-pivot irrigation…

Centre-pivot irrigation system design for uniform water application rate

2020

In the last few decades, the use of centre-pivot irrigation systems has significantly increased, since it makes farming easier, is more efficient and less time-consuming compared to the other irrigation systems. Several studies have been focused on the hydraulics of the centre-pivot systems. Standard high-pressure impact sprinklers or low-pressure spray sprinklers or Low Energy Precision Application (LEPA) systems are generally mounted on the pipeline.

To ensure the uniformity of water application, the centre-pivot design requires increasing the flow rates along the lateral, because the sprinklers farther from the pivot move faster, and th…

Effects of irrigation on fruit ripening behavior and metabolic changes in olive

2012

Olive (Olea europaea, cv Leccino) fruits grown under different water regimes were analyzed by metabolomics and specific transcript accumulation analyses. The fruit from non-irrigated (rain-fed) and irrigated trees cultivated under field conditions, with a seasonal water amount equivalent to the calculated crop evapotranspiration (ETc) was compared in the last developmental phase and, in particular, at commercial harvest. Metabolomics (GC-MS) analysis identified several hundred metabolites in ripe mesocarp, 46 of which showed significantly different contents in the rain-fed and irrigated samples. Some compounds involved in primary metabolism (carbohydrates, amino acids, organic acids) and se…

A comparative study of the physicochemical properties of iron isomaltoside 1000 (Monofer®), a new intravenous iron preparation and its clinical impli…

2011

Abstract The treatment of iron deficiency anemia with polynuclear iron formulations is an established therapy in patients with chronic kidney disease but also in other disease areas like gastroenterology, cardiology, oncology, pre/post operatively and obstetrics’ and gynecology. Parenteral iron formulations represent colloidal systems in the lower nanometer size range which have traditionally been shown to consist of an iron core surrounded by a carbohydrate shell. In this publication, we for the first time describe the novel matrix structure of iron isomaltoside 1000 which differs from the traditional picture of an iron core surrounded by a carbohydrate. Despite some structural similaritie…

A joint action of deep eutectic solvents and ultrasound to promote Diels−Alder reaction in a sustainable way

2020

The need to reduce environmental impact of chemical processes has induced a surge of attention in the choice of solvent and methodologies to carry them out. In this context, we studied the Diels−Alder reaction using N-ethylmaleimide as dienophile and changing the nature of the diene in deep eutectic solvents (DES) under both conventional heating and ultrasonic activation. DES obtained by the combination of different hydrogen bond acceptors and donors allowed assessing the role played by solvent nature. DES proved suitable solvent media for the target reaction, allowing higher yields and faster reactions compared to conventional organic solvents. The trend of yields, both in silent and under…

Structural characterization of iron oxide/hydroxide nanoparticles in nine different parenteral drugs for the treatment of iron deficiency anaemia by …

2013

Drug products containing iron oxide and hydroxide nanoparticles (INPs) are important for the treatment of iron deficiency anaemia. Pharmaceuticals prepared by the complexation of different kinds of INPs and carbohydrates have different physicochemical and biopharmaceutic characteristics. The increasing number of parenteral non-biological complex drugs (NBCD) containing iron requires physicochemical methods for characterization and enabling of cross comparisons. In this context the structure and the level of crystallinity of the iron phases may be connected to the in vitro and in vivo dissolution rates, which etiologically determine the therapeutic and toxic effects. X-ray powder diffraction…
