Abstract Background & Aims Ancient wheat varieties are considered to be healthier than modern ones, but the data are not univocal. We investigated changes in hematochemical parameters and evaluated microbiota data before and after a set period on a diet containing a whole-meal ancient wheat mix. Detection of iron restriction in anaemic and non-anaemic patients: New diagnostic approaches.

Objective The aim of this study was to detect iron restriction in non-anaemic patients and iron-restricted erythropoiesis (IRE) in patients with anaemia. Method Haematologic indices and biochemical markers of iron deficiency (ID) were determined using the clinically accepted cut-off level for serum ferritin of ≤30 μg/l as reference of ID. To evaluate the prevalence of iron restriction and IRE in patients with higher ferritin levels we used the thresholds of the markers of ID as reference. Results In the anaemic group 17.1% of patients with ferritin levels >30 μg/l had IRE. The number of patients with IRE declined with increasing ferritin concentration. Liver disease in chelated transfusion-dependent thalassemics: the role of iron overload and chronic hepatitis C.

Iron overload and hepatitis virus C infection cause liver fibrosis in thalassemics. In a monocentric retrospective analysis of liver disease in a cohort of 191 transfusion-dependent thalassemics, in 126 patients who had undergone liver biopsy (mean age 17.2 years; 58 hepatitis virus C-RNA positive and 68 hepatitis virus C-RNA negative) the liver iron concentration (median 2.4 mg/gr dry liver weight) was closely related to serum ferritin levels (R = 0.58; p<0.0001). Male gender (OR 4.12) and serum hepatitis virus C-RNA positivity (OR 11.04) were independent risk factors for advanced liver fibrosis. Noninvasive assessment of liver fibrosis in thalassaemia major patients by transient elastography (TE) - lack of interference by iron deposition.

The correlation between liver stiffness, measured by transient elastography, liver fibrosis, using the histological METAVIR score, and iron overload, measured by atomic absorption spectrometry was evaluated in 56 homozygous-beta-thalassaemics. Liver stiffness increased proportionally to liver fibrosis staging (r = 0.70; P > 0.001) independently of liver iron concentration (r = 0.01; P = 0.932). The area under the receiver-operating characteristic curve for prediction of cirrhosis was 0.997 (95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.925-1.000) with cut-off of 13 kPa with 100% sensitivity (95% CI: 69.0-100.0) and 95% specificity (95% CI: 84.2-99.3). Single region of interest versus multislice T2* MRI approach for the quantification of hepatic iron overload.

Purpose To evaluate the effectiveness of the single ROI approach for the detection of hepatic iron burden in thalassemia major (TM) patients in respect to a whole liver measurement. Materials and Methods Five transverse hepatic slices were acquired by a T2* gradient-echo sequence in 101 TM patients and 20 healthy subjects. Improved T2* assessment in liver iron overload by magnetic resonance imaging.

In the clinical MRI practice, it is common to assess liver iron overload by T2* multi-echo gradient-echo images. However, there is no full consensus about the best image analysis approach for the T2* measurements. The currently used methods involve manual drawing of a region of interest (ROI) within MR images of the liver. Evaluation of a representative liver T2* value is done by fitting an appropriate model to the signal decay within the ROIs vs. the echo time. Multislice multiecho T2* cardiovascular magnetic resonance for detection of the heterogeneous distribution of myocardial iron overload.

This study aimed to determine the feasibility, reproducibility, and reliability of the multiecho T * 2 Magnetic resonance imaging technique at 3 T for myocardial and liver iron burden quantification and the relationship between T * 2 values at 3 and 1.5 T.
