Iconography and monumental art in "feodal space" from the 10th to the 12th century : the depiction of the Three Kings and its spread

This dissertation deals with the iconography of the Three Kings from the Xth to the XIIth century, by means of a study of its adaptation on monumental decoration in Latin Europe, so as to unravel how it was adapted by feudal society. In order to do so, the first question is that of the new royal status acquired in the Xth century by the Magi from the Gospel of Matthew, analyzed thanks to the concept of “ruler figure” that emerged at the time and was depicted by Marc Bloch in Les Rois thaumaturges (1924) and Ernst Kantorowicz in the The King’s Two Bodies (1957). The author attempts to interpret two paintings by Caspar David Friedrich with the motif of the hero turned with the back to the spectator. The former is one of his most renown works entitled Wanderer above the Sea of Fog also known as Wanderer Above the Mist, the latter, a slightly later work Woman at a Window – the example of a frequently used open widow motif in the iconography of Romanticism. The differences that decide on the meaning of these two canvases – as the author argues – is the gender of the created personas and the place from which they perceive the world.

The tympanum of the central portal of Nantes cathedral. Owing to a reassessment of the available sources on the sculptured decor of the façade of Saint-Pierre et Saint-Paul cathedral in Nantes, it is possible to bring some precisions about the original state of the building. The tympanum of the central portal of this façade did not present, as is usually acknowledged, an original openwork design which was filled up in the 17th century when the organ loft was erected. The cone of Abies nebrodensis (Pinaceae) in an unreleased watercolored drawing by Angelina Damiani Lanza. – A watercolored drawing of the Abies nebrodensis cone, the endemic fir tree of the Madonie Mountains, in Sicily, for a long time considered extinct, is presented and commented on. Made by Angelina Damiani, daughter of architect Giuseppe Damiani Almeyda and husband of Domenico Lanza, the first Sicilian botanist who is interested in protecting the threatened tree species. This study proposes some reflections on the relationship between the Cathedral of Palermo and the urban portion where it is placed, in relation to the indissoluble connection with the landscape that in the history offered a variety of perceptive suggestions marked by the passage and the coexistence of different cultural and social domination. The proposed contribution is focused on the graphic analysis of an eighteenth-century perspective view portraying one of the most ancient squares of the City of Palermo (piazza Garraffello). It is an engraving print made by F. Cichè in 1711 on commission of the Guild of Silversmiths: the square is completely described with the fountain (still existing) in the foreground, and with the corporate lodges of foreign nations in the background (these two buildings nowadays have disappeared).
