Leaf and stem anatomy in eight Hypericum species (Clusiaceae).

Abstract - Foliar micromorphology, epicuticular wax morphology and anatomical features of leaves and stem, particularly secondary xylem, were examined with light microscopy, general and histochemical staining and scanning electron microscopy in eight Hypericum species. Outer tegument tissue and type of secondary xylem are determining characteristics. Secondary xylem is ring-porous in H. perforatum, H. perfoliatum, H. tetrapterum, H. triquetrifolium, H. androsaemum and H. hircinum. In H. aegypticum and H. pubescens xylem is diffuse-porous, which is considered to be a more primitive type. These characteristics may be considered an additional criterion for species identification.

In plant taxonomy, classification aims at reconstructing an evolutionary history, usually represented by means of phylogenetic trees. The approach followed by the classification is hierarchical, and rather in coherence with the dichotomies traditionally used for identifying a certain species. But classification and identification are different, since the latter just aims at finding the name of a specimen, eventually in order to get information on it. There are many ways to identify a specimen: to trace it back to its origin, by following the bifurcations of its phylogenetic tree is one possibility, but not always the easiest and quickest one. Abstract This chapter provides an updated vision of the contexts in which the psychometric viability of the AUDIT has been evaluated during this century. This has permitted the identification of why, where, and how this screening method, as well as its most well-known abridged version (the AUDIT-C), is being used in different socio-sanitary areas. Throughout the chapter, appropriate recommendations are offered for all professionals wishing to use these instruments, while also pointing out potential future research lines.

Abstract A non-linear model of human cardio-vascular system, which includes the short-term pressure regulation mechanism was mathematically derived and implemented on a PDP-11/45 in a block-oriented, interactive programming language. In this way the behaviour of the arterial and venous pressures, cardiac output, stroke volume, total peripheral resistance and heart-rate under ergometric workload was studied by simulation, and experimentally proved, that the model matches the system with good accuracy. An identification procedure for biological systems cast as quasi-species models is proposed. Their identification is a challenging problem because of the bilinear dependence on the parameters and their physical constraints. The proposed solution is within the framework of set-membership identification. %The bilinear dependence on parameters of the model and their physical constraints make the present issue challenging. We determine an estimate of the model parameters together with their interval of variability (Uncertainty Intervals), taking into account all the physical constraints. Evolution of fermenting microbiota in tarhana produced under controlled technological conditions

PubMedID: 21839387 The purpose of this study was to evaluate the evolution of lactic acid bacteria (LAB) and yeasts during the fermentation of tarhana produced with some pasteurised ingredients and carried out at 30 and 40 °C. The chemical parameters were those typical for tarhana production. Coliform bacteria were not detected during fermentation, while LAB and yeasts were in the range 10 7-10 8 colony forming units (CFU) g -1. Plate counts showed an optimal development of both fermenting microbial groups and the differences in cell concentrations were not significant (P > 0.05).
