Swift light sheet volumetric charting of large human brain portions
2020
Using a custom light sheet fluorescence microscope, we image large stained human brain portions, labelled for NeuN and GAD67 neuronal markers, discerning the inhibitory population via neural-network based image analysis and exposing the brain connectivity.
RNA Nanostructure Molecular Imaging
2020
Atomic force and transmission electron microscopies (AFM/TEM) are powerful tools to analyze RNA-based nanostructures. While cryo-TEM analysis allows the determination of near-atomic resolution structures of large RNA complexes, this chapter intends to present how RNA nanostructures can be analyzed at room temperature on surfaces. Indeed, TEM and AFM analyses permit the conformation of a large population of individual molecular structures to be observed, providing a statistical basis for the variability of these nanostructures within the population. Nevertheless, if double-stranded DNA molecular imaging has been described extensively, only a few investigations of single-stranded DNA and RNA …
Musicianship can be decoded from magnetic resonance images
2020
AbstractLearning induces structural changes in the brain. Especially repeated, long-term behaviors, such as extensive training of playing a musical instrument, are likely to produce characteristic features to brain structure. However, it is not clear to what extent such structural features can be extracted from magnetic resonance images of the brain. Here we show that it is possible to predict whether a person is a musician or a non-musician based on the thickness of the cerebral cortex measured at 148 brain regions en-compassing the whole cortex. Using a supervised machine-learning technique, we achieved a significant (κ = 0.321, p < 0.001) agreement between the actual and predicted par…
Operative Anatomy of the Skull Base: 3D Exploration with a Highly Detailed Interactive Atlas.
2020
Abstract Objective We evaluated the usefulness of a three-dimensional (3D) interactive atlas to illustrate and teach surgical skull base anatomy in a clinical setting. Study Design A highly detailed atlas of the adult human skull base was created from multiple high-resolution magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and computed tomography (CT) scans of a healthy Caucasian male. It includes the parcellated and labeled bony skull base, intra- and extracranial vasculature, cranial nerves, cerebrum, cerebellum, and brainstem. We are reporting retrospectively on our experiences with employing the atlas for the simulation and teaching of neurosurgical approaches and concepts in a clinical setting. Setti…
Corticospinal Tract Integrity and Long-Term Hand Function Prognosis in Patients With Stroke
2019
Background: The restoration of hand function is an important goal for patients with stroke. This study investigated the relationship between corticospinal tract (CST) integrity and the functional status of the hand in patients with stroke 6 months after onset and evaluated which of the following values would be useful for predicting hand function: fiber number (FN), fractional anisotropy (FA) at the mid-pons, and FA at the pontomedullary junction. Methods: The present retrospective cross-sectional observational study assessed 44 patients with stroke who were able to walk without using a walking aid or orthosis. The final hand function results were classified into three groups: no recovery (…

The negative interpretation of body sensations (e.g., as sign of a severe illness) is a crucial cognitive process in pathological health anxiety (HA). However, little is known about the nature and the degree of automaticity of this interpretation bias. We applied an implicit association test (IAT) in 20 subjects during functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) to investigate behavioral and neural correlates of implicit attitudes towards symptom words. On the behavioral level, body symptom words elicited strong negative implicit association effects, as indexed by slowed reaction times when symptom words were paired with the attribute “harmless” (incongruent condition) relative to a contro…
