Electrochemical Impedance Spectra of Particulate Matter and Smoke

2011

Particularly aerosol particles of fine dimensions are recognized to have a strong impact on the climate change, on the atmospheric energy budget, on the environment and on human health. In this study coarse aerosol particles with different black carbon mass concentrations were investigated by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. Present work describes preparation of particulate matter samples for impedance measurements, the principles of the structure of electrochemical cell and the relationship between parameters obtained from impedance spectra and black carbon mass concentration. Using complex electrode it is possible to obtain qualitative impedance spectra of particulate matter which …

Fabrication and characterization of small tunnel junctions through a thin dielectric membrane

1998

We show that a small tapered hole through a thin silicon nitride membrane provides a mask for tunnel junction structures. Our experiments imply, unlike in the conventional planar electron beam lithography, that tunnel junctions are well voltage biased in this structure with vanishingly small on-chip impedance. Our technique allows fabrication of double junctions, and even multijunction linear arrays, with small metallic islands in between.

Oil-in-Water fL Droplets by Interfacial Spontaneous Fragmentation and Their Electrical Characterization

2019

Inkjet printing is here employed for the first time as a method to produce femtoliter-scale oil droplets dispersed in water. In particular, picoliter-scale fluorinated oil (FC40) droplets are printed in the presence of perfluoro-1-octanol surfactant at a velocity higher than 5 m/s. Femtoliter-scale oil droplets in water are spontaneously formed through a fragmentation process at the water/air interface using minute amounts of nonionic surfactant (down to 0.003% v/v of Tween 80). This fragmentation occurs by a Plateau-Rayleigh mechanism at a moderately high Weber number (10(1)). A microfluidic chip with integrated microelectrodes allows droplets characterization in terms of number and diamet…

Electrochemically induced free solvent transfer in thin poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) films

2015

International audience; In dynamic intrinsically conducting films, counterions transfer and conformational movements stimulated by the electrochemical reactions affect the free water molecules transfer. Poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) or PEDOT is included in this category. Here, p-doping of PEDOT immersed in LiClO4 aqueous solution was explored by ac-electrogravimetry. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy combined with mass impedance spectroscopy proves useful for species identification and kinetics. For PEDOT, new equations have been developed to analyze the ac -electrogravimetry response. Quantitatively, faster free water transfer and slower coupled View the MathML sourceClO4−/free wat…

Influence of the anion on diffusivity and mobility of ionic liquids composite polybenzimidazol membranes

2020

[EN] The study of proton conductivity processes has received increasing attention in the past decades due to their potential applications in fields such as electrochemical devices and fuel cells. Despite the high number of composite membranes which have been described for this purpose, fundamental studies of the conduction phenomena in polymeric membranes are scarce. In this article, we study on the effect of the anion on ionic conductivity of ionic liquid composite polybenzimidazole (PBI) membranes. These membranes, which contain 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium (BMIM) with different counterions ([Cl]-, [NCS]-, [NTf2]- and [BF4]-) were analyzed by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) in…

Characterizing archaeological bronze corrosion products intersecting electrochemical impedance measurements with voltammetry of immobilized particles

2017

Application of electrochemical impedance measurements to microparticulate deposits of copper corrosion products attached to graphite electrodes in contact with 0.10 M aqueous HClO4 electrolyte is described. The impedance measurements were sensitive to the applied potential and the amount of solid sample and were modeled taking into account the contribution of the uncovered base electrode. Several pairs of circuit elements provide monotonic variations which are able to characterize different corrosion compounds regardless the amount of microparticulate solid on the electrode. Application to a set of archaeological samples from the archaeological Roman site of Gadara (Jordan, 4th century AD) …

Characterization and Electrochemical Properties of Oxygenated Amorphous Carbon (a-C) Films

2016

Amorphous carbon (a-C) films with varying oxygen content were deposited by closed-field unbalanced magnetron sputtering with the aim to understand the effect of oxygen on the structural and physical properties of the films and subsequently correlate these changes with electrochemical properties. The a-C films were characterized by transmission electron microscopy, helium-ion microscopy, atomic force microscopy, Raman spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and time-of-flight elastic recoil detection analysis. The electrochemical properties were studied by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy and cyclic voltammetry with several redox systems (Ru(NH3)62+/3+, Fe(CN)64−/3−, dopamine an…

Effects of anion size on the electrochemical behavior of H2SO4-structured poly(o-toluidine) films. An ac-electrogravimetry study in acid solutions

2014

International audience; ac -Electrogravimetry has allowed an easy separation of kinetic information to be evaluated for all the transferred species in three different H2SO4-structured poly(o-toluidine) or POT films, View the MathML sourcePOT-NO3−, View the MathML sourcePOT-ClO4− and POT-Cl− films when they are polarized between the pernigraniline (oxidized) and leucoemeraldine (reduced) forms. It is clear that larger anions slow down the electrochemical transitions of POT films, but the effects of anion transfer on hydrated protons and free solvent transfers are affected. For the same polymeric structure of a POT film, the kinetics of all specie transfers have been evaluated considering the…

Application of electrochemical impedance for characterising arrays of Bi2S3 nanowires

2015

Abstract Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy (EIS) was used to characterise the electrical properties of bismuth sulphide (Bi2S3) nanowires (NWs) templated within anodic aluminium oxide (AAO) membranes. A specially engineered cell, with a nominal electrolyte volume of 0.1–0.2 ml, was used to hold and measure the electrochemical impedance of the fragile NW/AAO samples. An equivalent circuit model was developed to determine the filling density of nanowires within the porous templates. The EIS method can be utilised to probe the nanowire filling density in porous membranes over large sample areas, which is often unobtainable using electron microscopy and conductive atomic force microscopy t…

Mammalian cell growth on gold nanoparticle-decorated substrates is influenced by the nanoparticle coating

2014

In this work, we study epithelial cell growth on substrates decorated with gold nanorods that are functionalized either with a positively charged cytotoxic surfactant or with a biocompatible polymer exhibiting one of two different end groups, resulting in a neutral or negative surface charge of the particle. Upon observation of cell growth for three days by live cell imaging using optical dark field microscopy, it was found that all particles supported cell adhesion while no directed cell migration and no significant particle internalization occurred. Concerning cell adhesion and spreading as compared to cell growth on bare substrates after 3 days of incubation, a reduction by 45% and 95%, …
