Association between climate and new daily diagnoses of COVID-19
2020
AbstractBackgroundAlthough evidence is accumulating that climate conditions may positively or negatively influence the scale of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) outbreaks, uncertainty remains concerning the real impact of climate factors on viral transmission. Methods. The number of new daily cases of COVID-19 diagnosed in Verona (Italy) was retrieved from the official website of Veneto Region, while information on daily weather parameters in the same area was downloaded from IlMeteo website, a renowned Italian technological company specialized in weather forecasts. The search period ranged between March 1 to November 11, 2020. The number of new daily COVID-19 cases and meteorological da…
Scenografie del sacro: Convent Theatre and Music in Palermo, 1650-1750
From the second half of the seventeenth century, Palermo’s convents contributed to the musical framework of the city through the performance of musical plays, oratorios, feste teatrali and other similar works. It is known that since the Cinquecento, as well as contributing music to sacred services, female communities employed music to enrich and ornament their entertainments. With the emergence of the typically Baroque taste for astonishment, music began to play a more prominent role, becoming one of the most important elements in convent theatre. The nuns often took part in public performances, during which they sang and played musical instruments, thereby confirming that convent life was …

Tumor Biology and Natural History
2021
Tumors are not uniform diseases but heterogeneous entities consisting of cell populations called cell clones, with different genetic and molecular features. The ability of a tumor to evolve and fit to host microenvironment, by developing often resistance mechanisms to the anticancer therapies, is dependent on this biological variability. In fact, the variability observed within individual tumors, known as intra-tumor heterogeneity, represents the crucial step in cancer clonal evolution process, by promoting and driving a genetic mechanism able to select the fittest cell clones. A single clonal origin is usually shown by most of tumors at the early stages of the disease, whereas advanced-sta…
«Per non dar moto alle fabriche»: l'ingegnere regio Scipione Basta e la costruzione della cappella Roano nel duomo di Monreale
2015
«PER NON DAR MOTO ALLE FABBRICHE»: THE ROYAL ENGINEER SCIPIONE BASTA AND THE CONSTRUCTION OF THE ROANO CHAPEL IN THE CATHEDRAL OF MONREALE. In December 1686 the Royal Engineer Scipione Basta, a personality still largely to be investigated but which seems to portend a specific expertise in techno-constructive issues and in particular in structural reinforcement, was appointed by the Viceroyal Government to draw up a technical report concerning some delicate constructive aspects of the project of the architect fra Giovanni da Monreale for the chapel commissioned by the archbishop Roano for the cathedral. Due to the particular configuration of the building to be constructed –a domed octagonal …
Cell expression of GDAP1 in the nervous system and pathogenesis of Charcot-Marie-Tooth type 4A disease
2007
Abstract Mutations in the mitochondrial protein GDAP1 are the cause of Charcot-Marie-Tooth type 4A disease (CMT4A), a severe form of peripheral neuropathy associated with either demyelinating, axonal or intermediate pheno-types. GDAP1 is located in the outer mitochondrial membrane and it seems that may be related with the mitochondrial network dynamics. We are interested to define cell expression in the nervous system and the effect of mutations in mitochondrial morphology and pathogenesis of the disease. We investigated GDAP1 expression in the nervous system and dorsal root ganglia (DRG) neuron cultures. GDAP1 is expressed in motor and sensory neurons of the spinal cord and other large neu…
A systematic review of animal models for experimental neuroma
2015
Summary Peripheral neuromas can result in an unbearable neuropathic pain and functional impairment. Their treatment is still challenging, and their optimal management is to be defined. Experimental research still plays a major role, but - although numerous neuroma models have been proposed on different animals - there is still no single model recognised as being the reference. Several models show advantages over the others in specific aspects of neuroma physiopathology, prevention or treatment, making it unlikely that a single model could be of reference. A reproducible and standardised model of peripheral neuroma would allow better comparison of results from different studies. We present a…
On Finite Satisfiability of Two-Variable First-Order Logic with Equivalence Relations
2009
We show that every finitely satisfiable two-variable first-order formula with two equivalence relations has a model of size at most triply exponential with respect to its length. Thus the finite satisfiability problem for two-variable logic over the class of structures with two equivalence relations is decidable in nondeterministic triply exponential time. We also show that replacing one of the equivalence relations in the considered class of structures by a relation which is only required to be transitive leads to undecidability. This sharpens the earlier result that two-variable logic is undecidable over the class of structures with two transitive relations.
Gain-scheduled H-infinity observer design for nonlinear stochastic systems with time-delay and actuator saturation
2012
In this paper, we propose a method for designing continuous gain-scheduled robust H ∞ observer on a class of extended stochastic nonlinear systems subject to time delay and actuator saturation. Initially, gradient linearization procedure is applied to describe such extended nonlinear systems into several model-based linear systems. Next, a robust linear H ∞ observer is designed to such linear stochastic models. Subsequently, a convex hull set is investigated and sufficient condition is derived in terms of feedback observer to determine whether a given initial condition belongs to an ellipsoid invariant set. Finally, continuous gain-scheduled approach is employed to design continuous nonline…
