New approach for quantifying water depth applied to the enigma of drowning of carbonate platforms
2002
This research illustrates application of a fluid-inclusion technique for quantifying water depth of ancient carbonate platforms. Jurassic limestones of Monte Kumeta, Italy, were cemented with submarine calcite during a transition to carbonate platform termination. The calcite cements contain fluid inclusions consisting of Jurassic seawater and immiscible gas bubbles trapped during the growth and penecontemporaneous recrystallization of the cements. Crushing analysis indicates that gas bubbles are under pressures indicative of entrapment in water depths of 23–112 m. Assuming simple deepening and acknowledging chronostratigraphic errors, rates of relative rise in sea level were initially less…
Escape of Supercritical-CO2 Fluids Trapped in Calcite Nano-metric Pores
2019
Flow of supercritical CO2-bearing fluids through a rock is a fundamental phenomenon which acts upon a great many geological processes ranging from seismic activity to formation of ore deposits. Atomic Force Microscopy scanning experiments allowed us to infer movement of supercritical CO2-bearing fluids through calcite crystals and relate it to natural decrepitation of nanoscale fluid inclusions. Calculated velocities exceed the rate of diffusion predicated via current vacancy models by several orders of magnitude implying that CO2-rich fluid movement through micro and nano-pore space may presently be greatly underestimated.
Recycled crustal carbon in the depleted mantle source of El Hierro volcano, Canary Islands
2021
The Canary Islands, in the eastern Atlantic, are among the most enigmatic Oceanic Island provinces on Earth, as the mantle source feeding its volcanism exhibits wide spatial heterogeneity and a multiplicity of sources. Multi-isotope whole-rock studies have long revealed the presence of a recycled oceanic crust/lithosphere component in the mantle source. However, noble gas systematics have been more challenging to interpret, and the available carbon isotope data is limited and cannot support/dismiss this interpretation. Here, we present the very first isotopic characterisation of CO2 and noble gases (He-Ne-Ar) in fluid inclusions (FI) in minerals hosted in mantle xenoliths from El Hierro, th…
Lo sviluppo resiliente. Diritti umani, inclusione ed esclusione differenziale nelle politiche di capacity development
2019
The relationship between concepts such as resilience, capacity development, empowerment and poverty reduction, and their corresponding practices, works as a matrix of neoliberal subjectivation processes involving both men and women on a global level. In the framework of the human resilience paradigm, the concepts and political practices of development have taken on a particularly strategic value and conceptual meaning, and are producing unexpected effects in term of inclusion, exclusion, abandonment, and exploitation. Analysing capacity development policies as relates to resilience allows us to observe how Governmentality regulates the life and death of people on the global scene of the lat…
ALS-linked FUS mutations confer loss and gain of function in the nucleus by promoting excessive formation of dysfunctional paraspeckles
2019
Mutations in the FUS gene cause amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS-FUS). Mutant FUS is known to confer cytoplasmic gain of function but its effects in the nucleus are less understood. FUS is an essential component of paraspeckles, subnuclear bodies assembled on a lncRNA NEAT1. Paraspeckles may play a protective role specifically in degenerating spinal motor neurons. However it is still unknown how endogenous levels of mutant FUS would affect NEAT1/paraspeckles. Using novel cell lines with the FUS gene modified by CRISPR/Cas9 and human patient fibroblasts, we found that endogenous levels of mutant FUS cause accumulation of NEAT1 isoforms and paraspeckles. However, despite only mild cytoplasm…
P-T path development derived from shearband boudin microstructure
2016
This work focuses on the development of a regional P-T-path from the Malpica-Lamego Ductile Shear Zone, NW Portugal, based on the microstructures of shearband boudins evolved during progressive simple shear. The combination of microstructural analysis, fluid inclusion studies, crystallographic pre- ffered orientation and fractal geometry analyses, allows to link several stages in the internal evolution of the boudin to regional P-T conditions. The boudinage process is initiated under differential stress after the original layer achieved sufficient viscosity contrast relative to the surrounding matrix. Two main transformations occur simultaneously: i) change in the external shape with contin…
Interpretative model of shearband boudins internal evolution in HT ductile shear zones
2012
The internal structure of a shearband boudin resulting from an original igneous, hydrothermal or metamorphic segregation tabular rigid body is a subject of scientific interest. It allows understanding the deformation mechanisms acting on homogeneous quartz aggregate activated during simple shear progressive deformation. This work is focused on the characterization of the internal evolution of shearband boudins, using microtextural analysis, fluid inclusions studies, fractal and OCP analysis. The proposed interpretative model shows the several structural stages that can be well established during the process of the internal evolution of shearband boudin.
Analysis of Spanish Parents' Knowledge about ASD and Their Attitudes towards Inclusive Education.
2022
To make possible the inclusion of children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) in mainstream settings, parental knowledge and attitudes towards the disorder play a key role between the home and the school setting. However, prior literature has not carried out an in-depth analysis of parents’ knowledge about ASD and their attitudes toward the inclusion of children with this diagnosis. This study examined the parental attitudes towards inclusion and knowledge about ASD. Participants were parents of children with ASD (n = 75), parents of children without ASD whose children had prior or current contact with peers with ASD (n = 44), and parents of children with no previous interactions with a pe…
La comunità come rete di relazioni reciproche: percorsi collaborativi nella formazione iniziale degli insegnanti di sostegno
2017
Communities of practice can become a perfect place where teachers can reflect on their practice, share approaches, experiment with new content and new practices. The interaction between teachers in a community of practice encourages peer learning and stimulates problem solving. The present work, centered on the reciprocal teaching and project based learning methodologies, involved 195 disability and inclusion pre-service teachers and gave them the opportunity to experience the integration of the two teaching / learning models through which they learned how to collaborate and achieve results in effective way and working with others.
