The dynamics of Italian competitive positioning in the Mediterranean Bluefin tuna industry

2020

The bluefin tuna or Thunnus thynnus is one of the widely recognised fish species since ancient times. Italy is the most important players in the international arena, however, the introduction of a system of total allowable catches and other measures established by the International Commission for the Conservation of Atlantic Tunas, has deeply changed the competitive positioning of Italy. The aim of this study is to perform an analysis of the comparative advantage of Italy by using the relative trade advantage index. Findings reveal that Italy has gained a competitive advantage in the Maltese market and has suffered a loss of the historical competitive advantage in the Japanese one. Results …

The role of the accumulation of poverty and unemployment for health disadvantages

2020

Health inequality is an important aspect of how advantages and disadvantages are distributed within societies. We extend previous research by considering how trajectories of poverty and employment affect self-reported health among young adults. We use data from the German Socio-Economic Panel, restricting the analytical sample to those who were 25 to 45 year-old in 2005. We calculated the indexes that account for persistence and intensity of poverty and employment on 10-year-long individual-level employment and household-level poverty trajectories. Ordinal logit regression models show that both long-lasting poverty and short periods out of employment are detrimental for men’s health. In con…

Assessment of antifungal activity of extracts from nettle (Urtica dioica L.) against Alternaria solani = Ocena aktywności przeciwgrzybowej ekstraktów…

2015

(Urtica dioica L.) w stężeniach 2,5, 5,0, 10,0, 20,0, 40,0% wobec fitopatogennego szczepu Alternaria solani.

The Adolescent Label Impact Index in a Multicentric Observational Study. Have the Tobacco Advertisements an Impact on the Adolescents?

2020

Background: Pictorial warnings may contribute to lower attractiveness of smoking, particularly among adolescents. The present study compared the impact of two different label styles of tobacco product warnings (textual and pictorial) among adolescents in a new standardized way, using the Adolescent Label Impact Index (ALII). Methods: A school-based cross-sectional study was conducted. Adolescent aged 10–20 years completed an online questionnaire. The ALII score was used to assess the impact of only-textual (ALII-T) and pictorial advertisements (ALII-P). Results: A total of 1,759 students (68.4% response-rate) declared that graphic warnings have a significant impact than textual ones (p <…

Relationship between authors’ keywords in journal papers and indexing terms in databases ISOC, IME and ICYT

2005

The keywords provided by authors in their scientific articles and the descriptors assigned to those articles in various databases are analysed to find out the role played by these keywords during the indexing process. In order to do that, 108 periodical publications proportionally distributed between Social Sciences and Humanities (36 journals), Science and Technology (36) and Medical and Health Sciences (36) were selected. Ten articles were selected from each of the 108 journals from different years, so that we worked altogether on 1080 articles meeting two conditions: including keywords and being indexed in the databases ISOC, ICYT or IME. Then, we proceeded to draw a comparison between t…

Age Differences in Technology Readiness and Its Effects on Information System Acceptance and Use : The Case of Online Electricity Services in Finland

2017

Although technology readiness (TR) has been found to influence the acceptance and use of information systems (IS), little is known about how TR varies in terms of different demographic variables and how these demographic variables moderate the effects of TR on IS acceptance and use. In this study, we aim to address this gap in prior research by examining the potential age differences in the four technology readiness index (TRI) constructs as well as their effects on IS use intention and its two main antecedents hypothesised in the technology acceptance model (TAM): perceived usefulness and perceived ease of use. The examination is conducted in the context of online electricity services and …

Body Composition, Energy Availability, Training, and Menstrual Status in Female Runners.

2020

Purpose: To determine body composition, energy availability, training load, and menstrual status in young elite endurance running athletes (ATH) over 1 year, and in a secondary analysis, to investigate how these factors differ between nonrunning controls (CON), and amenorrheic (AME) and eumenorrheic (EUM) ATH. Correlations to injury, illness, and performance were also examined. Methods: Altogether 13 ATH and 8 CON completed the Low Energy Availability in Females Questionnaire. Anthropometric, energy intake, and peak oxygen uptake assessments were made at 4 time points throughout the year: at baseline post competition season, post general preparation, post specific preparation, and post comp…

P056 Occupational exposure to metals and risk of breast, chronic lymphocytic leukaemia, colorectal, prostate, and stomach cancer in the MCC-spain cas…

2016

Arsenic, cadmium, chromium, and nickel are classified by IARC as human carcinogens (Group 1), while lead as a probable/possible carcinogen to humans (Group 2A). We explored associations between occupational exposure to metals and breast, chronic lymphocytic leukaemia (CLL), colorectal, prostate, and stomach cancer in the MCC-Spain population based case-control study. Methods The analyses were based on 3047 controls, and 1499 breast, 1539 colorectal, 332 CLL, 1070 prostate, and 382 stomach cancer cases. Occupational exposure to arsenic, cadmium, chromium, iron, lead and nickel was assessed using the MatEmEsp job-exposure matrix. Logistic regression models accounting for education, sex, geogr…

Birefringent porous silicon membranes for optical sensing

2012

In this work anisotropic porous silicon is investigated as a material for optical sensing. Birefringence and sensitivity of the anisotropic porous silicon membranes are thoroughly studied in the framework of Bruggeman model which is extended to incorporate the influence of environment effects, such as silicon oxidation. The membranes were also characterized optically demonstrating sensitivity as high as 1245 nm/RIU at 1500 nm. This experimental value only agrees with the theory when it takes into consideration the effect of silicon oxidation. Furthermore we demonstrate that oxidized porous silicon membranes have optical parameters with long term stability. Finally, we developed a new model …

Institutional logics and social enterprises: Entry mode choices of foreign hospitals in China

2020

When social enterprises, being defined by their social mission and profitability, internationalize, they need to\ud respond to institutional logics in the host country. By juxtaposing institutional logic and entry mode choice\ud literature, this paper shows how social enterprises accommodate different institutional logics when they enter\ud foreign markets. We collected data on Chinese healthcare reform, governmental policies and their changes, and\ud conducted 36 in-depth interviews and three expert group meetings. By analyzing five non-Chinese hospitals\ud entering China, we show how social enterprises, as hybrid organizations, respond to governmental, commercial,\ud and social institutio…
