Finite-time stability and stabilisation for a class of nonlinear systems with time-varying delay

This paper is concerned with the problems of finite-time stability FTS and finite-time stabilisation for a class of nonlinear systems with time-varying delay, which can be represented by Takagi–Sugeno fuzzy system. Some new delay-dependent FTS conditions are provided and applied to the design problem of finite-time fuzzy controllers. First, based on an integral inequality and a fuzzy Lyapunov–Krasovskii functional, a delay-dependent FTS criterion is proposed for open-loop fuzzy system by introducing some free fuzzy weighting matrices, which are less conservative than other existing ones. Optimal control of discrete-time interval type-2 fuzzy-model-based systems with D-stability constraint and control saturation

This paper investigates the optimal control problem for discrete-time interval type-2 (IT2) fuzzy systems with pole constraints. An IT2 fuzzy controller is characterized by two predefined functions, and the membership functions and the premise rules of the IT2 fuzzy controller can be chosen freely. The pole assignment is considered, which is constrained in a presented disk region. Seeking to address the lack of research reproducibility in science, including psychology and the life sciences, a pragmatic solution has been raised recently:  to use a stricter p < 0.005 standard for statistical significance when claiming evidence of new discoveries. Notwithstanding its potential impact, the proposal has motivated a large mass of authors to dispute it from different philosophical and methodological angles. Inferring causation from time series in earth system sciences

The heart of the scientific enterprise is a rational effort to understand the causes behind the phenomena we observe. In large-scale complex dynamical systems such as the Earth system, real experiments are rarely feasible. However, a rapidly increasing amount of observational and simulated data opens up the use of novel data-driven causal methods beyond the commonly adopted correlation techniques. Here, we give an overview of causal inference frameworks and identify promising generic application cases common in Earth system sciences and beyond. We discuss challenges and initiate the benchmark platform causeme.net to close the gap between method users and developers.

Population genomic analysis of elongated skulls reveals extensive female-biased immigration in Early Medieval Bavaria

Significance Many modern European states trace their roots back to a period known as the Migration Period that spans from Late Antiquity to the early Middle Ages. We have conducted the first population-level analysis of people from this era, generating genomic data from 41 graves from archaeological sites in present-day Bavaria in southern Germany mostly dating to around 500 AD. While they are predominantly of northern/central European ancestry, we also find significant evidence for a nonlocal genetic provenance that is highly enriched among resident Early Medieval women, demonstrating artificial skull deformation. Toward a direct and scalable identification of reduced models for categorical processes.

The applicability of many computational approaches is dwelling on the identification of reduced models defined on a small set of collective variables (colvars). A methodology for scalable probability-preserving identification of reduced models and colvars directly from the data is derived—not relying on the availability of the full relation matrices at any stage of the resulting algorithm, allowing for a robust quantification of reduced model uncertainty and allowing us to impose a priori available physical information. Reconstructing the phylogeny of large groups of large divergent genomes remains a difficult problem to solve, whatever the methods considered. Methods based on distance matrices are blocked due to the calculation of these matrices that is impossible in practice, when Bayesian inference or maximum likelihood methods presuppose multiple alignment of the genomes, which is itself difficult to achieve if precision is required. Oxidative stability of virgin olive oil: evaluation and prediction with an adaptive neuro-fuzzy inference system (ANFIS).

Background An adaptive neuro-fuzzy inference system (ANFIS) was employed to predict the oxidative stability of virgin olive oil (VOO) during storage as a function of time, storage temperature, total polyphenol, α-tocopherol, fatty acid profile, ultraviolet (UV) extinction coefficient (K268 ), and diacylglycerols (DAGs). Results The mean total quantities of polyphenols and DAGs were 1.1 and 1.9 times lower in VOOs stored at 25 °C than in the initial samples, and the mean total quantities of polyphenols and DAGs were 1.3 and 2.26 times lower in VOOs stored at 37 °C than in the initial samples, respectively.
