A visual framework to support collaborative coding activities

2019

In this paper, we present a framework named SIRENE, a Web-based visual programming environment, where teachers and students can collaboratively interact, using a flexible and versatile definition of visual programming code instead of pre-established rules. After the description of the architecture of the SIRENE framework, the preliminary results of a pilot trial with secondary school students will be presented; these results will lead to the final remarks and directions for further developments.

Deep Metric Learning for Histopathological Image Classification

2022

Neural networks demonstrated to be effective in multiple classification tasks with performances that are similar to human capabilities. Notwithstanding, the viability of the application of this kind of tool in real cases passes through the possibility to interpret the provided results and let the human operator take his decision according to the information that is provided. This aspect is much more evident when the field of application is bound to people's health as for biomed-ical image classification. We propose for the classification of histopathological images a convolutional neural network that, through metric learning, learns a representation that gathers in homogeneous clusters the …

The Sound Design Toolkit

2017

The Sound Design Toolkit is a collection of physically informed sound synthesis models, specifically designed for practice and research in Sonic Interaction Design. The collection is based on a hierarchical, perceptually founded taxonomy of everyday sound events, and implemented by procedural audio algorithms which emphasize the role of sound as a process rather than a product. The models are intuitive to control – and the resulting sounds easy to predict – as they rely on basic everyday listening experience. Physical descriptions of sound events are intentionally simplified to emphasize the most perceptually relevant timbral features, and to reduce computational requirements as well. Keywo…

Input for baroreflex analysis: which blood pressure signal should be used?

2022

The baroreflex (BR) is an important physiological regulatory mechanism which reacts to blood pressure perturbations with reflex changes of target variables such as the heart period (electrocardiogram derived RR interval) or the peripheral vascular resistance (PVR). Evaluation of cardiac chronotropic (RR as a target variable) and vascular resistance (target PVR) BR arms was in previous studies mainly based on the use of the spontaneous variability of the systolic or diastolic blood pressure (SBP, DBP), respectively, as the input signals. The use of other blood pressure measures such as the mean blood pressure (MBP) as an input signal for BR analysis is still under investigation. Making the a…

Evaluation of a nonlinear prediction algorithm quantifying regularity, synchronization and directionality in short cardiovascular variability series

2006

An unifying approach evaluating complex dynamics and dynamical interactions in short bivariate time series is presented. The method performs nearest neighbor local linear prediction to estimate regularity, synchronization and directionality of two interacting time series. It was implemented through a specific cross-validation procedure which allowed an unconstrained embedding of the series and a full exploitation of the available data to maximize the accuracy of prediction. The approach was evaluated by simulations of stochastic (autoregressive processes) and deterministic (Henon maps) models in which uncoupled, unidirectionally coupled and bidirectionally coupled dynamics were generated. T…

Spectral analysis of the beat-to-beat variability of arterial compliance

2022

Arterial compliance is an important parameter influencing ventricular-arterial coupling, depending on structural and functional mechanics of arteries. In this study, the spontaneous beat-to-beat variability of arterial compliance was investigated in time and frequency domains in thirty-nine young and healthy subjects monitored in the supine resting state and during head-up tilt. Spectral decomposition was applied to retrieve the spectral content of the time series associated to low (LF) and high frequency (HF) oscillatory components. Our results highlight: (i) a decrease of arterial compliance with tilt, in agreement with previous studies; (ii) an increase of the LF power content concurrent…

Assessment of Cardiorespiratory Interactions During Spontaneous and Controlled Breathing: Non-linear Model-free Analysis

2022

In this work, nonlinear model-free methods for bivariate time series analysis have been applied to study cardiorespiratory interactions. Specifically, entropy-based (i.e. Transfer Entropy and Cross Entropy) and Convergent Cross Mapping asymmetric coupling measures have been computed on heart rate and breathing time series extracted from electrocardiographic (ECG) and respiratory signals acquired on 19 young healthy subjects during an experimental protocol including spontaneous and controlled breathing conditions. Results evidence a bidirectional nature of cardiorespiratory interactions, and highlight clear similarities and differences among the three considered measures.

Transfer Entropy Analysis of Pulse Arrival Time - Heart Period Interactions during Physiological Stress

2022

Although Heart Period (HP) variability is the most widely used measure to assess cardiovascular oscillations, its evaluation combined with that of Pulse Arrival Time (PAT) variability may provide additional information about cardiac dynamics and cardiovascular interactions. In this study, we computed the transfer entropy from PAT to HP in 76 subjects monitored at rest and during orthostatic and mental stress using both a model-free (k- Nearest Neighbors) and a linear parametric estimator. Our results show how the information flow between these two variables depends on the physiological condition and how the nonlinear measure captures more information than the linear one during orthostatic s…

Feasibility of Ultra-short Term Complexity Analysis of Heart Rate Variability in Resting State and During Orthostatic Stress

2022

In this work, we study ultra-short term (UST) complexity of Heart Rate Variability (HRV) and its agreement with analysis of standard short-term (ST) HRV recordings obtained at rest and during orthostatic stress. Conditional Entropy (CE) measures have been computed using both a linear Gaussian approximation and a more accurate model-free approach based on nearest neighbors. The agreement between UST and ST indices has been compared via statistical tests and correlation analysis, suggesting the feasibility of exploiting faster algorithms and shorter time series for detecting changes in cardiovascular control during various states.
