Biotechnology and Conservation of Cultural Heritage

2017

Over the past few decades, biotechnology has provided innovative techniques useful for diagnosing cultural heritage deterioration induced by microbiological systems and for defining efficient conservation/restoration strategies. Seen from this per- spective, the International Congress on Molecular Biology and Cultural Heritage held in Seville (Spain) in 2003 represents a milestone. This book comes from the experience gained in the last decade of basic and applied research, developed in the Laboratory of Biology and Biotechnology for Cultural Heritage (LaBBCH), within the framework of national and international research projects and in collaboration with other Italian and foreign research in…

Growth of Mytilus galloprovincialis (mollusca, bivalvia) close to fish farms: a case of integrated multi-trophic aquaculture within the Tyrrhenian Sea

2009

A current practice of marine aquaculture is to integrate fish with low-trophic-level organisms (e.g. molluscs and/or algae) during farming to minimise effects of cultivation on the surrounding environment and to potentially increase economic income. This hypothesis has been tested in the present article experimentally, by co-cultivating fish and mussels (Mytilus galloprovincialis) in the field. Integrated multi-trophic aquaculture (IMTA) experiments were started in July 2004 by transplanting mussel seed at two depths (-3 and -9 m) within 1,000 m downstream to fish cages and at 1,000 m upstream from cages. Mussels were cultured in nylon net bags for 12 months and the growth recorded biometri…

Generation of travelling sine-Gordon breathers in noisy long Josephson junctions

2022

The generation of travelling sine-Gordon breathers is achieved through the nonlinear supratransmission effect in a magnetically driven long Josephson junction, in the presence of losses, a current bias, and a thermal noise source. We demonstrate how to exclusively induce breather modes by means of controlled magnetic pulses. A nonmonotonic behavior of the breather-only generation probability is observed as a function of the noise intensity. An experimental protocol providing evidence of the Josephson breather's existence is proposed.

The fouling phenomenon in membrane bioreactors: model description and strategies for energy saving

2015

Membrane fouling represents one of the major crucial issues for membrane bioreactor (MBR). Membrane fouling and high aeration requirements (for inducing shear stress to limit fouling) make MBR operation economically demanding due to high energy costs. Although several studies on MBR fouling have been performed, a comprehensive knowledge on how to reduce membrane fouling and consequently energy saving is still lacking. Two scenarios are analyzed and compared each implementing different operating conditions. As expected, MBR operation at low air flow rate (qa) leads to a substantial reduction of the operational costs (namely, 20% respect to the suggested manufacturers ones in terms of qa).

Uncertainty estimation of a complex water quality model: GLUE vs Bayesian approach applied with Box – Cox transformation

2010

In urban drainage modelling, uncertainty analysis is of undoubted necessity; however, several methodological aspects need to be clarified and deserve to be investigated in the future, especially in water quality modelling. The use of the Bayesian approach to uncertainty analysis has been stimulated by its rigorous theoretical framework and by the possibility of evaluating the impact of new knowledge on the modelling estimates. Nevertheless, the Bayesian approach relies on some restrictive hypotheses that are not present in less formal methods like GLUE. One crucial point in the application of Bayesian methods is the formulation of a likelihood function that is conditioned by the hypotheses …

The fouling phenomenon in membrane bioreactors: assessment of different strategies for energy saving

2012

Membrane fouling represents one of the major limiting issue for membrane bioreactor (MBR) in the wastewater treatment field. Membrane fouling and high aeration requirement (for inducing shear stress to limit fouling) in MBR systems make the operation of such systems economically demanding due to high energetic costs. Despite several studies on MBR fouling have been performed a comprehensive knowledge on how to reduce membrane fouling and consequently energy saving is still lacking and controversial. The aim of this study is to gain insights on the optimization of the operating conditions in an MBR system. In particular, the influence of the aeration intensity and the durations of filtration…

Uncertainty propagation throughout an integrated water-quality model

2010

In integrated urban drainage water quality models, due to the fact that integrated approaches are basically a cascade of sub-models (simulating sewer system, wastewater treatment plant and receiving water body), uncertainty produced in one sub-model propagates to the following ones depending on the model structure, the estimation of parameters and the availability and uncertainty of measurements in the different parts of the system. Uncertainty basically propagates throughout a chain of models in which simulation output from upstream models is transferred to the downstream ones as input. The overall uncertainty can differ from the simple sum of uncertainties generated in each sub-model, dep…
