Globalization and Political Legitimacy in Western Europe

2018

Is there a legitimacy crisis in contemporary democracies? This question, asked since the beginning of the 1970s, has been currently undergoing a revival (Kriesi in Politische Vierteljahresschrift 54:609–638, 2013; Fuchs and Escher in The Legitimacy of Regional Integration in Europe and the Americas. Integration Through Participation Introductory Notes to the Study of Administrative Integration

2002

When aiming at studying the interconnectedness of administrative systems - and in particular the integration of domestic governance systems and the institutions of the European Union - at least two variables are important to address: (i) the intensity and frequency of cross-level interaction and participation amongst the members of these systems, and (ii) the principles of organization being uppermost at both levels of governance. This article argues that in order to measure administrative integration, particular emphasis should be attached to the way these variables impact upon the organization members individually. Put more precisely, I argue that studies of administrative integration sho…

International Fiscal-Financial Spillovers:the Effect of Fiscal Shocks on Cross-Border Bank Lending

2019

This paper sheds new light on the degree of international fiscal-financial spillovers by investigating the effect of domestic fiscal policies on cross-border bank lending. By estimating the dynamic response of U.S. cross-border bank lending towards the 45 recipient countries to exogenous domestic fiscal shocks (both measured by spending and revenue) between 1990Q1 and 2012Q4, we find that expansionary domestic fiscal shocks lead to a statistically significant increase in cross-border bank lending. The magnitude of the effect is also economically significant: the effect of 1 percent of GDP increase (decrease) in spending (revenue) is comparable to an exogenous decline in the federal funds ra…

Asymmetrical Crisis in the European Union: The Example of Greece

2020

The article presents the current economic crisis from an historical perspective, analyzing the building of the monetary integration and the common currency. The process is explained pointing out its effects on the European integration and outlining the positive and negative consequences of the introduction of a common currency in the European Union. The investigation continues with a general outlook of the current situation of the countries more affected by the current crisis, Greece, Ireland, Portugal, Spain and Italy. All of them have in common the necessity of extra funding in a context of austerity, plus some national particularities. The author proposes an expansion in the public spend…

Do Eurosceptic Parties Influence Their Party Systems?

2021

This book is written around—and anchored in—the Radical Party Hypothesis, which states that the success of Eurosceptic parties leads to changes of policy position/preferences by the other parties. In order to test it, it seeks to analyse whether the position changes of centrist parties on the issue of European Integration correlate with the electoral success of Eurosceptic Parties in those aforementioned parties’ countries, when controlling for a variety of factors, such as public opinion/sentiment on EU integration, socio-economic factors, time, as well as characteristics of those parties whose position changes this study measures: their size, their ideological orientation, their electoral…

Religion and Social Integration in France

2013

On some measures, France has the most integrated (and secularised) Muslim population in Europe. For example, attitude research shows that French Muslims share values closer to those of their non-Muslim neighbours than in other European countries (Connor 2010 391). While official sources of data are limited as the French government does not collect statistics organised by religion, ethnicity or any other form of collective identity, a number of private and international surveys have been carried out. Thus, the European Values Survey (2002–6 data) shows that rates of religious observance for Muslims in France are closer to those amongst the majority population than in either Britain or the Ne…

Technology-Enhanced Course in English Theoretical Grammar and Phonetics at the Tertiary Level

2021

The advancement of technologies and the recently forced lockdown by Covid-19 are bringing changes to the organisation of the learning process by accelerating the introduction of e-learning to create a learner-centred technology-based approach to English studies, thus stepping towards digital humanities. These trends initiated the institutional project Mobile and Desktop Software Integration in Bachelor and Master Study Programmes. The present study, using a questionnaire, elicits university students’ attitudes to the mobile applications and speech analysis software-based seminar activities in Moodle e-course in accordance with the blended learning model selected for the studies of theoretic…

Grip Force Adjustments Reflect Prediction of Dynamic Consequences in Varying Gravitoinertial Fields

2018

International audience; Humans have a remarkable ability to adjust the way they manipulate tools through a genuine regulation of grip force according to the task. However, rapid changes in the dynamical context may challenge this skill, as shown in many experimental approaches. Most experiments adopt perturbation paradigms that affect only one sensory modality. We hypothesize that very fast adaptation can occur if coherent information from multiple sensory modalities is provided to the central nervous system. Here, we test whether participants can switch between different and never experienced dynamical environments induced by centrifugation of the body. Seven participants lifted an object …

Membrane insertion and topology of the p7B movement protein of Melon Necrotic Spot Virus (MNSV)

2007

AbstractCell-to-cell movement of the Melon Necrotic Spot Virus (MNSV) is controlled by two small proteins working in trans, an RNA-binding protein (p7A) and an integral membrane protein (p7B) separated by an amber stop codon. p7B contains a single hydrophobic region. Membrane integration of this region was observed when inserted into model proteins in the presence of microsomal membranes. Furthermore, we explored the topology and targeting mechanisms of full-length p7B. Here we present evidence that p7B integrates in vitro into the ER membrane cotranslationally and with an Nt-cytoplasmic/Ct-luminal orientation. The observed topology was monitored in vivo by fusing GFP to the Ct of p7B, enab…

Effects of apomorphine on orienting reaction in the rat

2009

Aim of the research was to study the possible relationship between rapid apomorphine-induced modifications of midbrain dopaminergic neuron activity and rapid modifications of a motor response triggered by sensory stimuli (sensory-motor integration. Following apomorphine administration, ANOVA test revealed significant decrease of head turning latency and duration. A change on dopamine release, leading to an inhibition or facilitation of dopamine-mediated responses to environmental stimuli, may be hypothesized.
