Laser induced thermal profiles in thermally and optically thin films
1988
The temperature field generated by the weak absorption of a gaussian laser beam in an optically and thermally thin film bounded by two transparent plates is discussed. An analytical solution of the problem is presented together with an algorithm for the numerical integration. The influence of the finite thermal conductivity of the plates is shown in an example.
Tests of quark-hadron duality in tau-decays
2016
An exhaustive number of QCD finite energy sum rules for $\tau$-decay together with the latest updated ALEPH data is used to test the assumption of global duality. Typical checks are the absence of the dimension $d=2$ condensate, the equality of the gluon condensate extracted from vector or axial vector spectral functions, the Weinberg sum rules, the chiral condensates of dimensions $d=6$ and $d=8$, as well as the extraction of some low-energy parameters of chiral perturbation theory. Suitable pinched linear integration kernels are introduced in the sum rules in order to suppress potential quark-hadron duality violations and experimental errors. We find no compelling indications of duality v…
Common fixed point results on quasi-Banach spaces and integral equations
2013
In this paper we obtain fixed and common fixed point theorems for self-mappings defined on a closed and convex subset C of a quasi-Banach space. We give also a constructive method for finding the common fixed points of the involved mappings. As an application we obtain a result of the existence of solutions of integral equations.
Dynamic integration of classifiers in the space of principal components
2003
Recent research has shown the integration of multiple classifiers to be one of the most important directions in machine learning and data mining. It was shown that, for an ensemble to be successful, it should consist of accurate and diverse base classifiers. However, it is also important that the integration procedure in the ensemble should properly utilize the ensemble diversity. In this paper, we present an algorithm for the dynamic integration of classifiers in the space of extracted features (FEDIC). It is based on the technique of dynamic integration, in which local accuracy estimates are calculated for each base classifier of an ensemble, in the neighborhood of a new instance to be pr…
A QM/MM study of the reaction mechanism for the 3′-processing step catalyzed by HIV-1 integrase
2009
Integrase (IN) is one of the three human immunodeficiency virus type 1 enzymes (HIV-1) essential for effective viral replication. This viral enzyme is involved in the integration of HIV DNA into host chromosomal DNA. In this work we have carried out molecular dynamics simulations using a hybrid Quantum Mechanics/Molecular Mechanics (QM/MM) approach to study the reaction mechanism for the 3′-processing step of DNA integration using a model substrate. The results obtained by QM(AM1)/MM and QM(PM3)/MM simulations have been improved by single-point corrections using an ab initio method to describe the quantum subsystem. The results obtained within this computational model can be used to obtain …
Suggestions to the Reader
1998
Each section of the book consists of two parts that have different goals. The first part, namely the text itself, is systematically developed. It consists of definitions and proven assertions assembled in an organized fashion and with no significant gaps for the reader to fill. All propositions and theorems, unless ready consequences of definitions and previously proven assertions, are proved in detail.
The effects of tasks on integrating information from multiple documents.
2008
The authors examine 2 issues: (a) how students integrate information from multiple scientific documents to describe and explain a physical phenomenon that represents a subset of the information in the documents; and (b) the role of 2 sorts of tasks to achieve this type of integration, either writing an essay on a question requiring integration across texts or answering shorter intratext questions that require students to integrate information within a single text, while superficial and deep comprehension measurements are obtained. Undergraduate students answered 1 of the 2 types of questions, and their reading times were recorded. Half of the sample thought aloud. Results showed that the in…
Comparing the Effect Size of School Level Support on Teachers’ Technology Integration
2020
Teachers are expected to lead the innovative use of Information Communication and Technology (ICT) at the classroom level of context. However, research literature shows that a number of factors influence their ICT pedagogical practices. Therefore, the present study investigates the influence of school level support on teacher educators’ technology integration. A mixed method is used to collect data through three focused interviews (N = 19) and self-completion survey (N = 136). The data collected is analysed both qualitatively and quantitatively. The result shows support for the model hypothesized and suggests that the ICT pedagogical practices of the teacher educators do not predict their t…
introduction – eu simulations as a multi-dimensional resource: from teaching and learning tool to research instrument
2015
Simulations, understood as complex role plays, are nowadays widely used in (university) teaching to actively engage students and promote content-specific interactive learning, understanding, and communication. There is a growing debate about the functions and benefits of simulations in the university teaching context. Simulating the EU is not yet as common as simulating the UN, but the use of EU simulations gradually increases. In this paper, we discuss several aspects of EU simulations. First, we briefly review the importance of the EU in current European politics, and to its growing complexity, which represents a challenge for teaching and studying European integration. Second, we indicat…
The essay presents two experiments in the use of knowledge of archaeological materials with resins to other santetic materials, used in the Fifties in Sicily in the sites of the walls of Capo Soprano in Gela and in the theater of E…
