The Garantie jeunes : an analysis of the direct and indirect effects on its beneficiaries. Taking into account the non-academic skills of young people
2022
The evaluation of the Garantie jeunes has resulted in three main reports (Farvaque et al., 2016 ; Loison-Leruste et al., 2016 ; Gaini et al., 2018). In this thesis, we seek to find out whether this scheme has an effect on the professional and social insertion of its beneficiaries, which transits through the acquisition of non-academic skills. Using a mixed survey method, we are interested in both the young people and the recruiters likely to hire them. On the one hand, our qualitative longitudinal approach is based on fifty-five semi-structured interviews conducted in three stages with the beneficiaries of the program. On the other hand, our quantitative approach, based on the vignette meth…

"The thing… is kinda complicated" : What and how do you assess in CLIL?
2021
“Every teacher is a language teacher” has almost become a mantra in educational systems throughout the world. However, what does it mean in practice? If language learning and teaching is a part of any classroom, how do you teach and assess both content and language simultaneously? This question inspired a collaboration of teachers and researchers from all around the world which we reflect on in this paper. nonPeerReviewed
A Cooperative Multi-Agent System for Crowd Sensing Based Estimation in Smart Cities
2020
The concept of Smart City has spread as a solution to ensure better access to information and services to citizens, but also as a means to reduce the environmental footprint of cities. To this end, a continuous and wide observation of the environment is necessary to analyze information that enables government bodies to act on the environment appropriately. Moreover, a diffused acquisition of information requires adequate infrastructure and proper devices, which results in relevant installation and maintenance costs. Our proposal enables reducing the number of necessary sensors to be deployed while ensuring that information is available at any time and anywhere. We present the HybridIoT syst…

Financial Fragmentation and Economic Growth in Europe
2015
Using industry data from Eurostat and applying the Rajan-Zingales methodology, we investigate the real growth effects of banking sector integration in the European Union. Our sample stretches from 2000 until 2012 and includes the phase of rapid financial integration before the global financial crisis as well as the following phase of financial fragmentation and bank deleveraging. We find evidence that banking sector integration had a more than four times stronger growth effect during the crisis than in normal times. Growth effects are also stronger in times of domestic bank deleveraging. We conclude that concerns of European policy makers about fragmentation in the European banking sector a…
Growing Like Germany: Local Public Debt, Local Banks, Low Private Investment
2021
The paper uses a panel of more than 1m German firms over 2010-2016, to provide the first firm-bank level evidence of local crowding out for a developed economy characterized by low interest rates and fiscal austerity. Our mechanism relies on two structural features of Germany's banking landscape: the local segmentation of credit markets for small and medium-sized firms (SME) and the role of local public banks in local public finance. Local public banks dominate lending to small and medium firms in Germany and also have an explicit mandate to lend to the local public sector. With spreads on local government debt at all-time lows, local public banks tried to break even, using their market pow…
Socio-emotional Experience in Human Technology Interaction Design – A Fashion Framework Proposal
2021
Technology designers and developers can be understood as social experience (SE) mediators. In user experience (UX), notions of SE have served to identify and define the factors contributing to human-technology interaction (HTI). Three dominant perspectives have been promoted in UX discourse: 1) SE of brand, brand value and consumer culture; 2) technology design as mediator of human-to-human interactions; and 3) meaning generation through action and interaction between actors. Symbolic interactionalism understands meaning as occurring through dialogue, in the construction of the social self, promoting self-reflection as a social construction. This theorisation of social experience is valuabl…
