Intellectual Capital and Company Value
2014
AbstractThe bulk of traditional corporate valuation methods reflect historical performance, while it is necessary to also take into consideration the value which is off-balance-sheet and possible growth. Large differences exist between company market and book value, and a part of this can be explained by intellectual capital. The aim of the study is to make an empirical investigation of the impact of intellectual capital on company value. Empirical results show that one can find mixed results regarding relationship between value added intellectual coefficient VAICTM and company value.
INTELLECTUAL FILTERS AND THE DISSEMINATION OF SMITHIANISM AN INTRODUCTORY NOTE
2020
Adfam Smith’s thought reached every corner of the world in a short lapse of time but made its entrance through institutional, cultural, linguistic, religious and political filters. These filters are not neutral and affected the reading, understanding and use of Smithian ideas. I chose the keyword ‘intellectual filters’ to denote all of the contextual elements whose influence determines whether and how a foreign paradigm penetrates a country and creates its effects.

Borderline intellectual functioning: an increased risk of severe psychiatric problems and inability to work
2019
Background The use of facilities such as disability pension, psychiatric care, health care and services for people with intellectual disabilities and borderline intellectual functioning (BIF) were compared with the general population and two other study groups comprising people with mild intellectual disabilities (MIDs) and learning problems (LPs). Methods The population-based sample (N = 416,973), 'Finland-in-Miniature', was gathered in 1962 and followed until 1998. For the purpose of the present study, three groups were formed: BIF (n = 416), MID (n = 312) and LP (n = 284). The use of services was examined with the help of national registers. Results As compared with the general populatio…
Easy-to-read Texts for Students with Intellectual Disability: Linguistic Factors Affecting Comprehension
2013
Background: The use of ‘easy-to-read’ materials for people with intellectual disabilities has become very widespread but their effectiveness has scarcely been evaluated. In this study, the framework provided by Kintsch's Construction–Integration Model (1988) is used to examine (i) the reading comprehension levels of different passages of the Spanish text that have been designed following easy-to-read guidelines and (ii) the relationships between reading comprehension (literal and inferential) and various linguistic features of these texts. Method: Sixteen students with mild intellectual disability and low levels of reading skills were asked to read easy-to-read texts and then complete a rea…
Expanding the clinical phenotype of patients with a ZDHHC9 mutation.
2013
In 2007, 250 families with X-linked intellectual disability (XLID) were screened for mutations in genes on the X-chromosome, and in 4 of these families, mutations in the ZDHHC9 gene were identified. The ID was either isolated or associated with a marfanoid habitus. ZDHHC9 encodes a palmitoyl transferase that catalyzes the posttranslational modification of NRAS and HRAS. Since this first description, no additional patient with a ZDHHC9 mutation has been reported in the literature. Here, we describe a large family in which we identified a novel pathogenic ZDHHC9 nonsense mutation (p.Arg298*) by parallel sequencing of all X-chromosome exons. The mutation cosegregated with the clinical phenotyp…
Cognitive dysfunction and depression in Fabry disease: a systematic review.
2013
Background Fabry disease, an X-linked lysosomal storage disorder, leads to multi-organ dysfunction, including cerebrovascular disease and psychological disorders. However, the prevalence and pattern of associated cognitive dysfunction is not well understood. Objectives To investigate whether there is reliable evidence for neuropsychological impairment in patients with Fabry disease and which cognitive domains are affected. To estimate the prevalence of and factors associated with depression in patients with Fabry disease. Method Qualitative systematic review of the literature of studies conducting neuropsychological assessment or measuring the prevalence of depression in adults with Fabry d…

Being Opposite. On the translation of antikeimena in Aristotle's De anima
2012
The main concern of this article is the interpretation of De Anima II.4 415a14-23, and the particular way by which it is generally translated by modern editors. Almost all modern translations adopt the two locutions - \emph{objects} and \emph{correlative objects} - to translate the Greek word \antikeimena. But this choice is not neutral, nor it is without consequences for the understanding of the text.
