A social humanoid robot as a playfellow for vocabulary enhancement

We introduce a system that exploits a Pepper humanoid robot acting as a playfellow in a word-play game. The robot can play a portmanteau game by directly interacting with children, and it exploits a conversation engine, a portmanteau creation engine, and a definition engine. The humanoid can play the role of either an answerer or a generator of new words.

Portmanteau Word-Play for Vocabulary Enhancement with Humanoid Robot Support

Word-play is as powerful learning and motivation tool often used by educators for teaching the ability of reading, which is a complex activity. In this paper, we introduce a system that exploits a Pepper humanoid robot acting as a playfellow in a word-play game based on portmanteau words. The robot shows the ability to play with children using a conversation engine, a portmanteau creation engine, and a definition engine. In this manner, Pepper can integrate itself within a group of kids, and it can support a teacher in her activities. The humanoid can be involved in a word-based round-game in which it can play the role of either answerer or generator of new words.

AbstractThe present study extends research on classroom quality profiles by examining the differences between profiles with respect to children’s development in pre-academic skills and motivation across the kindergarten year. Teacher–child interactions were observed in 49 Finnish kindergarten classrooms using the CLASS Pre-K instrument. Vocational education approach: New TEL settings—new prospects for teachers' instructional activities?

This study focuses on vocational education teachers’ instructional activities in a new technology-enhanced learning (TEL) setting. A content analysis is applied to investigate teachers’ and students’ interactions in a 3D game context. The findings illustrate that when teachers’ and students’ interactions are mediated by a game, teachers seem to apply different discussion activities to empower vocational learning than they do in traditional classroom settings. Numerical and experimental study of hydrostatic displacement machine

This paper presents a simulation tool to determine the structural deflections and corresponding leakage flow in a hydrostatic displacement motor. The simulation tool is applied to a new motor principle that is categorized as an extreme low-speed high-torque motor with dimensions that calls for attention to the volumetric efficiency. To counteract structural deflections the motor is equipped with compensation pressure volumes that may be used to limit the leakage flow across the end faces of the circular rotor. Constraining the spin-dependent WIMP-nucleon cross sections with XENON1T

We report the first experimental results on spin-dependent elastic weakly interacting massive particle (WIMP) nucleon scattering from the XENON1T dark matter search experiment. The analysis uses the full ton year exposure of XENON1T to constrain the spin-dependent proton-only and neutron-only cases. No significant signal excess is observed, and a profile likelihood ratio analysis is used to set exclusion limits on the WIMP-nucleon interactions. This includes the most stringent constraint to date on the WIMP-neutron cross section, with a minimum of 6.3 × 10−42 cm2 at 30 GeV/c2 and 90% confidence level.
