Speckle random coding for 2D super resolving fluorescent microscopic imaging.

2006

In this manuscript we present a novel super resolving approach based upon projection of a random speckle pattern onto samples observed through a microscope. The projection of the speckle pattern is created by coherent illumination of the inspected pattern through a diffuser. Due to local interference of the coherent wave front with itself, a random speckle pattern is superimposed on the sample. This speckle pattern can be scanned over the object. A super-resolved image can be extracted from a temporal sequence of images by appropriate digital processing of the image stream. The resulting resolution is significantly higher than the diffraction limitation of the microscope objective. The new …

Speckle Interferometry Analysis of Full-bending Behavior of GFRP Pultruded Material

2016

Abstract The use of Glass Fiber Reinforced Polymer materials (GFRP) has increased in the last years even among civil structural engineering due to their high specific strength, lightweight and excellent corrosion resistance. With application of the pultrusion method, the manufacture of large-scale profiles with various cross-section forms became potentially possible with relatively low costs. Usually two different technological approaches are available to realize the element: in the first one a mat-roving-mat sequence is adopted, in the second one only roving is present. Continuous filament mat (CFM, fibers distributed randomly in all directions) is often used to build up laminate thickness…

Temporal difference method for processing dynamic speckle patterns

2010

A temporal difference method for processing dynamic speckle images is proposed. In the method two speckle images of an object, separated by a time interval, are subtracted one from the other to detect whether the speckle structure has changed or not. The rationale of the method is discussed. A variant of the method that allows measuring the area of an activity zone surrounded by a static region is tested in digital simulations. As a demonstrative experiment, that variant is employed to characterize the drying of a damp patch in filter paper.

Phase-shifting by means of an electronically tunable lens: quantitative phase imaging of biological specimens with digital holographic microscopy

2016

The use of an electronically tunable lens (ETL) to produce controlled phase shifts in interferometric arrangements is shown. The performance of the ETL as a phase-shifting device is experimentally validated in phase-shifting digital holographic microscopy. Quantitative phase maps of a section of the thorax of a Drosophila melanogaster fly and of human red blood cells have been obtained using our proposal. The experimental results validate the possibility of using the ETL as a reliable phase-shifter device.

Limitation of carrier fringe methods in digital photoelasticity

2007

The carrier fringes method has been proposed in digital photoelasticity in combination with techniques such as Fourier transform and phase shifting method, without considering the influence of the isoclinics on the isochromatic patterns analysis. Unlike other optical methods as moire and holographic interferometry, in photoelasticity the light intensity emerging from a circular polariscope is related to both the isochromatic retardation and the isoclinic parameter. As it is shown by the theoretical analysis, owing to the misalignment between the principal stresses in the model and in the carrier, the computed retardation is affected by an error which is the same for all photoelastic methods…

Pulse trains produced by phase-modulation of ultrashort optical pulses: tailoring and characterization

2009

1094-4087; In this paper, creation of pulse doublets and pulse trains by spectral phase modulation of ultrashort optical pulses is investigated. Pulse doublets with specific features are generated through step-like and triangular spectral phase modulation, whereas sequences of pulses with controllable delay and amplitude are produced via sinusoidal phase modulations. A temporal analysis of this type of tailored pulses is exposed and a complete characterization with the SPIDER technique (Spectral Phase Interferometry for Direct Electric-field Reconstruction) is presented. Accuracy in dynamic laser speckle: optimum size of speckles for temporal and frequency analyses

2016

The dynamic laser-speckle phenomenon has been used as a potential tool to monitor the activity of many biological and nonbiological samples; however, a key tailoring of the experimental configuration must be taken into account to avoid wrong measurements, since the general rules addressed to speckle as information cannot be directly adopted in dynamic laser-speckle monitoring. The speckle/pixel size ratio is provided by the f-number and by the magnification of the macro lens, and attention is mainly directed toward adjusting a speckle/pixel ratio higher than 1. However, a speckle/pixel ratio much higher than one does not mean an optimum adjustment. This work tested different apertures with …

Millimeter-VLBI observations of low-luminosity active galactic nuclei with source-frequency phase-referencing

2021

We report millimeter-VLBI results of low-luminosity active galactic nuclei (M 84 and M 87) up to 88 GHz with source-frequency phase-referencing observations. We detected the weak VLBI core and obtained the first image of M 84 at 88 GHz. The derived brightness temperature of M 84 core was about 7.2$\times$10$^9$ K, which could serve as a lower limit as the core down to 30 Schwarzschild radii was still un-resolved in our 88 GHz observations. We successfully determined the core-shifts of M 87 at 22-44 GHz and 44-88 GHz through source-frequency phase-referencing technique. The jet apex of M 87 could be deduced at about 46 $\mu$as upstream of the 43 GHz core from core-shift measurements. The est…

A possible jet precession in the periodic quasar B0605-085

2010

The quasar B0605-085 (OH 010) shows a hint for probable periodical variability in the radio total flux-density light curves. We study the possible periodicity of B0605-085 in the total flux-density, spectra and opacity changes in order to compare it with jet kinematics on parsec scales. We have analyzed archival total flux-density variability at ten frequencies (408 MHz, 4.8 GHz, 6.7 GHz, 8 GHz, 10.7 GHz, 14.5 GHz, 22 GHz, 37 GHz, 90 GHz, and 230 GHz) together with the archival high-resolution very long baseline interferometry data at 15 GHz from the MOJAVE monitoring campaign. Using the Fourier transform and discrete autocorrelation methods we have searched for periods in the total flux-de…

The unusual multiwavelength properties of the gamma-ray source PMN J1603-4904

2013

We investigate the nature and classification of PMNJ1603-4904, a bright radio source close to the Galactic plane, which is associated with one of the brightest hard-spectrum gamma-ray sources detected by Fermi/LAT. It has previously been classified as a low-peaked BL Lac object based on its broadband emission and the absence of optical emission lines. Optical measurements, however, suffer strongly from extinction and the absence of pronounced short-time gamma-ray variability over years of monitoring is unusual for a blazar. We are combining new and archival multiwavelength data in order to reconsider the classification and nature of this unusual gamma-ray source. For the first time, we stud…
