Immigrant prisoners in Italy. Cultural mediation to reduce social isolation and increase migrant prisoner well-being?
2022
Purpose This study aims to highlight how easy it is for immigrants to break Italian law because of the country’s inadequate cultural and linguistic mediation service. Insufficiencies in this service also have a negative impact on both the psychological and physical health of migrant prisoners. Furthermore, Italian is used in legal disputes and prison, and reference is made to Italian culture, preventing migrants from understanding their position regarding the law. Design/methodology/approach This report concerns the psychological discomfort of migrant incarcerated individuals within Italian prisons due to national laws in force. Consideration is also given to the negative impact on the phy…

Performance and optimal design of Tuned Mass Damper Inerter for base isolated systems
In this paper, the use of a Tuned Mass Damper Inerter to mitigate the seismic response of a base-isolated structure is studied and compared to other passive control devices. The control performance of four different types of hybrid passive control strategies aiming to reduce base displacements of isolated buildings is investigated. Specifically, the Tuned Mass Damper (TMD), the Tuned Liquid Column Damper (TLCD), and finally, the Tuned Mass Damper Inerter, each one associated to a Base Isolated structure (BI system) have been considered. This study has been carried out using as optimal design parameters of the TMDI those estimated by a proposed direct optimization procedure, considering a wh…
A linear matrix inequality approach to robust fault detection filter design of linear systems with mixed time-varying delays and nonlinear perturbati…

Accepted version of an article in the journal: Journal of the Franklin Institute-Engineering and Applied Mathematics. The definitive version can be found on Sciverse: http://dx.doi.org/10.1016/j.jfranklin.2010.03.004 In this paper, the problem of robust fault detection filter (RFDF) design for a class of linear systems with some nonlinear perturbations and mixed neutral and discrete time-varying delays is investigated. By using a descriptor technique, Lyapunov-Krasovskii functional and a suitable change of variables, new required sufficient conditions are established in terms of delay-dependent linear matrix inequalities (LMIs) to synthesize the residual generation scheme. Based on the Luen…
Robust synchronization and fault detection of uncertain master-slave systems with mixed time-varying delays and nonlinear perturbations
2011
Publiahed version of an article in the journal: International Journal of Control, Automation and Systems. Also available from the publisher on SpringerLink: http://dx.doi.org/10.1007/s12555-011-0408-8 In this paper, the problem of robust synchronization and fault detection for a class of master-slave systems subjected to some nonlinear perturbations and mixed neutral and discrete time-varying delays is investigated based on an H ∞ performance condition. By introducing a descriptor technique, using Lyapunov-Krasovskii functional and a suitable change of variables, new required sufficient conditions are established in terms of delay-dependent linear matrix inequalities to synthesize the resid…
Mixed l-/l1 fault detection observer design for positive switched systems with time-varying delay via delta operator approach
2014
Published version of an article in the journal: International Journal of Control, Automation and Systems. Also available from the publisher at: http://dx.doi.org/10.1007/s12555-013-0466-1 This paper investigates the problem of fault detection observer design for positive switched systems with time-varying delay via delta operator approach. A new fault sensitivity measure, called l-index, is proposed. The l- fault detection observer design and multi-objective l -/l1 fault detection observer design problems are addressed. Based on the average dwell time approach and the piecewise copositive type Lyapunov-Krasovskii functional method in delta domain, sufficient conditions for the existence of …
Pain experience and social support of endometriosis patients during the COVID-19 pandemic in Germany – results of a web-based cross-sectional survey
2021
Background Endometriosis is a chronic pain condition in premenopausal women. Pain is mainly characterized by pain intensity and may induce disability in all areas of daily life. Nevertheless, pain is influenced by emotional and social factors as well. Social distancing measures or quarantine, as reaction to rapidly rising infections with the COVID-19 virus due to the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic, were implemented across Europe to prevent the spread of the virus and social distancing measures were imposed by the German government by beginning of March 2020 with initiation of the lockdown by the end of March 2020. The objective of this study was to assess, how social distancing measures during the lo…
Weather sensor fault detection in meteorological masts
2020
Wind power has become the world’s fastest growing renewable technology. The world-wide wind power installed capacity has exceeded 597 GW, and the new installations during the last three years was an average of 50 GW per year. A major issue with wind power system and with meteorological masts is the relatively high cost of operation and maintenance (OM). Wind turbines and sensor towers are hard-to-access structures, and they are often located in remote areas. That’s why continuous monitoring of wind turbine health using automated failure detection algorithms can improve turbine reliability and reduce maintenance costs by detecting failures before they reach a catastrophic stage and by elimin…
Confrontation of cryptic diversity and mate discrimination within Gammarus pulex and Gammarus fossarum species complexes.
2014
16 pages; International audience; Freshwater amphipods Gammarus fossarum and Gammarus pulex are widespread in Europe, with some evidence of cryptic diversity in the former. We used DNA barcoding to assess genetic diversity within and among amphipod populations and examined mate discrimination and pre-copulatory pair formation between genetically divergent individuals. Eight distinct G. fossarum and four distinct G. pulex molecular operational taxonomic units (MOTUs) were detected. Among the 33 amphipod populations sampled, 11 contained a single MOTU, 11 had two and 11 were composed of three sympatric MOTUs. Genetic divergences between sympatric MOTUs (G. fossarum and G. pulex MOTUs combined…
Microglia and α-synuclein implication in Parkinson's disease
2011
Age-related neurodegenerative disorders like Parkinson’s disease take an enormous toll on individuals and on society. Despite extensive efforts, Parkinson’s disease remains incurable and only very limited treatments exist. Indeed, Parkinson’s pathogenesis is still not clear and research on its molecular mechanisms is ongoing. In this study, we focused our interest on two abnormal events occurring in Parkinson’s patients, namely α-synuclein aggregation and microglial activation. We first investigated α-synuclein and its abnormal polymerisation. For this purpose, we developed novel methods, which allowed the in vitro production of different types of α-synuclein oligomers. Using highly sensiti…
