Intermediate Isolation System for the seismic retrofit of existing masonry buildings
2022
This paper deals with the potentials of Intermediate Isolation Systems (IIS) for retrofitting masonry buildings by means of a vertical extension, isolated at its base, and realized on the rooftop of the existing structure. By carefully defining the dynamic properties of the superstructure and isolation system, in previous papers the authors have demonstrated that this passive technique is able to reduce a priori the seismic demand on the existing building. For this reason, the non-linear behavior has been only assumed for the isolation system, with the masonry structure in the elastic field. This result has been validated by carrying out spectrum-compatible time history analyses on the 3D F…
Data from: Reproductive isolation among allopatric Drosophila montana populations
2014
An outstanding goal in speciation research is to trace the mode and tempo of the evolution of barriers to gene flow. Such research benefits from studying incipient speciation, in which speciation between populations has not yet occurred but where multiple potential mechanisms of reproductive isolation (RI: i.e. premating, postmating-prezygotic (PMPZ), and postzygotic barriers) may act. We used such a system to investigate these barriers among allopatric populations of Drosophila montana. In all heteropopulation crosses we found premating (sexual) isolation which was either symmetric or asymmetric depending on the population pair compared. Postmating isolation was particularly strong in cros…
Isolation of Central Nervous System (CNS) Infiltrating Cells
2014
Leukocyte infiltration of the central nervous system (CNS) occurs under certain pathogenic conditions and most often results in severe disorders. Therefore, the isolation and analysis of such infiltrating cell populations is necessary for elucidating the underlying pathogenic mechanisms. Here we describe a simple and straightforward protocol for cell isolation from the inflamed CNS, which combines mechanical dissociation and enzymatic degradation of the tissue. Additionally, purification by Percoll gradient centrifugation provides a great yield of the infiltrating material. The isolated cells can be further used for downstream applications such as cell sorting, cellular or molecular analysi…
Analysis and review of the perioperative management of COVID-19 patients in thoracic surgery.
2021
"It's like being stuck on an unsafe and unpredictable rollercoaster": Experiencing substance use problems in a partner.
2020
Living with a partner with substance abuse problems may induce strains in an individual’s everyday life, including poor health, disrupted family life, and social isolation; this may lead to dropping out of education or work, a lack of safety and support, and facing various dilemmas and stigma.Aim:The purpose of this study was to explore these partners’ everyday life experiences, including their parental roles.Method:A qualitative design comprising qualitative interviews with ten partners and ex-partners was performed, and a thematic analysis was used. Results:The findings demonstrated that sharing their lives, including parenthood, with a partner with substance use problems affected every as…
„Eine Medizin der menschlichen Beziehungen” revisited - Aktuelle neurobiologische und psychosomatische Entwicklungen
2007
In his programmatic paper published 1989 in this journal, Herbert Weiner held the view that psychosomatic medicine has become a medicine of human relations. The aim of this review is TO reflect if current scientific evidence supports his view. Evidence from animal studies suggests that early infant-mother separation or neglect not only has a lasting influence on attachment behaviour, but also on brain development and the ability for stress regulation mediated by environmental as well as genetic factors. Neuronal networks processing affective components of physical pain play a role in signalling painful emotional experiences due to social isolation and separation. A consistent finding across…
The costs of friendship: severe mental illness, poverty and social isolation
2016
Background: The relationship between severe mental illness, poverty and social isolation has been explored in a number of studies.Aim: The purpose of the study was to explore the relationship betwe ...
Disconnected Lives: Trends in Time Spent Alone in Finland
2020
AbstractDiscussions about social isolation have been extensive over the past few decades. A less sociable nature of social ties has been identified in Western societies. The phenomenon has been associated with demographic changes such as aging and living alone as well as changes in the use of new technologies. In this study we employ representative Finnish Time Use Surveys from three decades, 1987–1988 (n = 1887), 1999–2000 (n = 2673) and 2009–2010 (n = 1887) to examine the trends in social isolation, measured as time spent alone. Our results showed that between 1987 and 2010 the time spent alone increased by 124 min per day. The increase was linear and occurred in nearly all population gro…

Vibrational Spectrum of HXeSH revisited : Combined computational and experimental study
2020
Vibrational spectrum of HXeSH embedded in low-temperature matrix is experimentally studied. To support the spectrum interpretation, anharmonic vibrational analysis is performed using different models and basis sets and the data is compared with previous experimental and theoretical analyses. Computations of overtones and combination modes allowed for new band assignments. The HXeSH molecule exhibits high anharmonicity similarly as other molecules from the noble-gas hydride family. Comparison of the employed computational methods shows once again that the modelling of the noble-gas compounds faces theoretical challenges to yield quantitatively reliable results. peerReviewed
