One of the first important acts of Charles Jean XIV as head of Sweden was to renounce the idea of reconquering Finland. It was a difficult position to take, considering the conditions of the time, and in all likelihood, he swung back and forth for several months before taking a definitive decision, contrary to what he might have asserted later. Moreover, the regent, then sovereign, of Sweden, was forced to justify his choice throughout his reign and to navigate between the dangerous reefs of a diverse opposition , which was organised to varying degrees.Thus, the Finnish policy was, for another thirty years, a thorn in the side of the royal power at Stockholm.

Lo studio, dopo una breve biografia aggiornata di Jean Carondelet, importante colto ecclesiastico e politico fiammingo, che fu anche arcivescovo di Palermo dal 1520 al 1544, ne indaga la committenza artistica (vetrate istoriate, paramenti sacri ricamati, stalli corali lignei intagliati, manoscritti liturgici miniati, dipinti, sculture marmoree) tra Franca Contea, Paesi Bassi borgognoni e la stessa Palermo, col supporto di un'inedito testamento secondo cui egli avrebbe donato già in vita "vestimenta seu ornamenta ecclesiastica" di grande valore alla cattedrale palermitana, tra cui forse la mitria e il paliotto già tradizionalmente identificati col suo cognome.
The Italian reception of Benda’s «Ariadne auf Naxos» and «Medea»: fascination and compromise

The monodramas “Ariadne auf Naxos” and “Medea” by the Czech composer Jiří Antonín Benda had an interesting and little known circulation in Italy, where they were translated, performed and adapted to local taste. Both the works were performed in Naples, in 1783 and in 1790 respectively, thanks to Norbert Hadrava, an officer in the Austrian army with a great passion for German music. The article demonstrates that Hadrava presented the two pièces on the stage of Teatro de’ Fiorentini with the original music by Benda, obtaining a large success. The aria "Misero pargoletto", sung by Timante in the third act of Pietro Metastasio's "Demofoonte", enjoyed exceptional fortune throughout the eighteenth century. The text was set tu music dozens of times not only as part of the opera it belongs to, but also as an independent piece. This essay discusses the judgements expressed on "Misero pargoletto" by several men of letters and theorists, examines some buffo parodies of the aria that demonstrate its wide notoriety, and formulates some hypotheses about the reasons for such a great success, which can be partially justified by the new conception of fatherood that emerged in the so-called Age of Sensibility.

The article critically engages with Giorgio Agamben’s reading of Rousseau in order to explore the affinities between the two authors’ subtractive approach to political subjectivation. In The Kingdom and the Glory. Agamben argues that Rousseau’s Social Contract reproduces, in a secularized manner, the providential paradigm of government, whose origins Agamben finds in early Christianity. This paradigm establishes a fictitious articulation between transcendent sovereignty and immanent government, presenting particular acts of government as emanating from general divine laws.
