Il volume descrive il contesto in cui vedono la luce le due mostre dedicate all’Arte Degenerata (Monaco 1937) e alla Musica Degenerata (Düsseldorf 1938), soffermandosi in modo particolare sui percorsi biografici e artistici di quattro compositori la cui biografia venne sconvolta dalla politica culturale nazista: Franz Schreker, Alexander Zemlinsky, Erich Wolfgang Korngold e Viktor Ullmann. After Canova’s death (1822), Italian contemporary art, especially painting, suffered from the widespread topos that Italy as “terre des morts” had frozen in historical self-reflection and therefore did not meet the demands of modern “romantic” art. One of the few internationally recognized exceptions was Francesco Hayez (1791–1882), whose history painting virtuosically combined modern literary subjects with elements derived from the Venetian tradition, such as the gestures of Canova and the colorfulness of Venetian Quattro and Cinquecento painting. Fra i vari temi, vengono affrontate le questioni relative alle rapporto con la cultura della Repubblica di Weimar, alle grandi mostre di Monaco (Entartete Kunst, 1937) e Duesselforf (Entartete Musik, 1938), nonché della produzione musicale all'interno del ghetto di Theresienstadt.

It also criticizes the sintacticist choice of formalism as well.
