In this work we introduce a virtual laboratory, APERIODIC DIFFRACT, developed in Matlab GUI (Graphical User Interface) as an informatics tool for teaching the diffractive properties of aperiodic gratings. This GUI allows the student to  generate aperiodic sequences by iterating and lets to study the spectra for different iterating orders.<br /><br />

Undergraduate experiment with fractal diffraction gratings

We present a simple diffraction experiment with fractal gratings based on the triadic Cantor set. Diffraction by fractals is proposed as a motivating strategy for students of optics in the potential applications of optical processing. Fraunhofer diffraction patterns are obtained using standard equipment present in most undergraduate physics laboratories and compared with those obtained with conventional periodic gratings. It is shown that fractal gratings produce self-similar diffraction patterns which can be evaluated analytically. Good agreement is obtained between experimental and numerical results. © 2011 IOP Publishing Ltd.

Graduate employment and the returns to higher education in Africa

Importantly, one of our methods adjusts for the effect of higher education on the rate of joblessness, which is substantial in most African countries, and particularly for women. Our results confirm that Mincerian coefficients cannot be interpreted as a true rate of return, and that the latter (even after taking into account the employment effect) is considerably lower than what has previously been suggested in the literature (less than half). A class of label-correcting methods for the K shortest paths problem

In this paper we deal with the problem of finding the first K shortest paths from a single origin node to all other nodes of a directed graph. In particular, we define the necessary and sufficient conditions for a set of distance label vectors, on the basis of which we propose a class of methods which can be viewed as an extension of the generic label-correcting method for solving the classical single-origin all-destinations shortest path problem. The data structure used is characterized by a set of K lists of candidate nodes, and the proposed methods differ in the strategy used to select the node to be extracted at each iteration. Abstract A simple connected graph is highly irregular if each of its vertices is adjacent only to vertices with distinct degrees. In this paper we find: (1) the greatest number of edges of a highly irregular graph with n vertices, where n is an odd integer (for n even this number is given in [1]), (2) the smallest number of edges of a highly irregular graph of given order.

Calcification is not the Achilles'heel of cold-water corals in an acidifying ocean

Ocean acidification is thought to be a major threat to coral reefs: laboratory evidence and CO2 seep research has shown adverse effects on many coral species, although a few are resilient. There are concerns that cold-water corals are even more vulnerable as they live in areas where aragonite saturation (Omega ara) is lower than in the tropics and is falling rapidly due to CO2 emissions.
