A penalty-based finite element interface technology

2002

Abstract An effective and robust interface element technology able to connect independently modeled finite element subdomains is presented. This method has been developed using the penalty constraints and allows coupling of finite element models whose nodes do not coincide along their common interface. Additionally, the present formulation leads to a computational approach that is very efficient and completely compatible with existing commercial software. A significant effort has been directed toward identifying those model characteristics (element geometric properties, material properties and loads) that most strongly affect the required penalty parameter, and subsequently to developing si…

Extending an example by Colding and Minicozzi

2018

Extending an example by Colding and Minicozzi, we construct a sequence of properly embedded minimal disks $\Sigma_i$ in an infinite Euclidean cylinder around the $x_3$-axis with curvature blow-up at a single point. The sequence converges to a non smooth and non proper minimal lamination in the cylinder. Moreover, we show that the disks $\Sigma_i$ are not properly embedded in a sequence of open subsets of $\mathbb{ R}^3$ that exhausts $\mathbb{ R}^3$.

Boundary element solution for free edge stresses in composite laminates

1997

The edge-stress problem in multilayered composite laminates under uniform axial extension is analyzed through an alternative method based on a boundary integral formulation. The basic equations of the formulation are discussed and solved by the multiregion boundary element method. Generalized orthotropic elasticity analytic fundamental solutions are employed to establish the integral equations governing the problem. The formulation is absolutely general with regard to the laminate stacking sequence and the section geometry and it does not require any aprioristic assumption on the elastic response nature. This makes the formulation suitable for an investigation of the singular behavior of th…

Variable kinematics equivalent single layer theories for magneto-electro-elastic multilayered plates

2014

In recent years, the employment of smart materials able to provide multi-functional capabilities, besides the traditional structural functions, has been gaining attention in several technological fields (automotive, aerospace, biomedical, robotics, etc.). This possibility of coupling different physical fields can be and it has been exploited in transducer applications, structural health monitoring, vibration control, energy harvesting and other applications. In this framework, magneto-electro-elastic (MEE) materials are attracting increasing consideration from academic and industrial audiences: MEE materials have the ability to couple mechanical, electrical and magnetic fields and this make…

General theory for cross-ply laminated beams

1997

We present a general formulation of the elasticity theory of the cross-ply composite laminated beam subjected to various loadings such as axial load, bending moment, shear/bending, and torsion. The formulation is based on the integral equation theory, and a direct approach is employed to obtain the boundary integral equations for the analysis of the laminated beam. The integral equations governing the elasticity problem are directly deduced from the reciprocity theorem, by using the singular solutions of the orthotropic elasticity explicitly derived. The numerical solution is achieved by the boundary element method, which gives, once the traction free boundary conditions and the interfacial…

Thermal buckling optimization of composite laminates by evolution strategies

2000

Abstract Thermal buckling optimization of laminated composite plates subject to a temperature rise is presented in this paper. Aerospace structures require such components that are able to withstand the external environment loads without loss of stability. The discrete optimal design problem, formulated under strain and ply contiguity constraints is solved using evolution strategies, a guided random-search method. Two different constraint handling methods are investigated and compared: the disregarding infeasible solutions and the classical penalty function approach. The results are also compared with an exact enumerative study conducted on the problem, showing the effectiveness and perform…

Immunohistochemical Characterization of Human Synovial Bursa Cells by Light and Transmission Electron Microscopy: Where do These Cells Come From?

2007
