Unwanted Literal Translation: An Underdiscussed Problem in International Achievement Studies
2012
In international achievement studies, a common test is typically used which is translated into the languages of the participating countries. For the test to be valid, all the translations and different-language test versions need to be equally difficult to read and answer. An underestimated and underdiscussed threat to this validity is unwanted literal translation. This paper discusses the problem of unwanted literal translation in international achievement studies. It defines what is meant by unwanted literal translation and explains why it is a threat to the validity of international achievement studies and why it is so difficult to avoid. It also discusses problems there have been when t…
Is There Any Hope for Developing Automated Translation Technology for Sign Languages?
2021
This article discusses the prerequisites for the machine translation of sign languages. The topic is complex, including questions relating to technology, interaction design, linguistics and culture. At the moment, despite the affordances provided by the technology, automated translation between signed and spoken languages – or between sign languages – is not possible. The very need of such translation and its associated technology can also be questioned. Yet, we believe that contributing to the improvement of sign language detection, processing and even sign language translation to spoken languages in the future is a matter that should not be abandoned. However, we argue that this work shou…
Problems of translating the laws of Rugby Union from English into Finnish
2014
Pienoisevankeliumi Raamatun suomentamisen pienoismallina
2018
The power of language policy : the legal recognition of sign languages and the aspirations of deaf communities
2016
This thesis explores Sign Language Peoples’ aspirations for the legal recognition of sign languages, with specific focus on Finland and Scotland. It highlights the timely need to strengthen (in practice) and scrutinize (academically) the legal measures that have been achieved as well as their implementation – and to measure all this against the challenges of endangerment and sustaining vitality. The theoretical framework for this study is centred in language policy and planning and political theory. The research methodology draws on principles of the ethnography of language policy and uses two traditional qualitative research methods, that is, interviews and participant observation, plus de…
The Saami languages and Finnish language legislation : a short historical overview
2017
Finland’s political, social and cultural conditions were transformed after its handover from Sweden to Russia in 1809. Emperor Alexander 1st strongly supported the majority language, Finnish, which had not previously enjoyed official status. The official language had long been Swedish, although some authorities did try from time to time to support the use of the vernacular, such as in elementary education and in the translation of some legislation. The 19th century was marked by increasing nationalism in Finland, with the country seeking to strengthen its autonomous status despite several clampdowns. As has often been observed, the Finnish nation, which can be characterised as an “imagined …
Acquisition of english as a second language by students with Asperger Syndrome: a theoretical approach
2015
Language acquisition through interaction between gamers in digital gaming environments
2014
Internetin kautta pelattavat moninpelit tarjoavat monenlaisia mahdollisuuksia harjoitella Englannin kielitaitoa, sekä käyttää sitä hyväksi erilaisissa kommunikointitilanteissa. Pelien hyötyä kieltenoppimisessa on jo jonkin verran tutkittu, mutta tutkimus rajoittuu suurelta osin itse pelien sisältöihin. Lähivuosina internetin kautta pelaaminen yhdessä toisten pelaajien kanssa on yleistynyt, mikä on avannut keskustelua myös pelien interaktiivisuuden vaikutuksista kielitaitoon. Internetissä tapaa usein pelaajia monista erilaisista kulttuureista ja taustoista, mikä rikastuttaa kielikulttuuria sekä mahdollistaa kielenkäytön harjoittelun matalan kynnyksen tilanteissa. Suomalaiset pelaavat interne…
