Kielitaidon kehittymistä on tutkittu paljon, mutta korkeakouluissa tapahtuvaa kielellisestä kehitystä ei niinkään, varsinkaan Suomessa. Opiskelijat ovat muutaman pakollisen kielikurssin jälkeen oman motivaationsa varassa, jaksavatko he pitää yllä kielitaitoaan. Tutkimukseni tarkoituksena on tuoda esille, kuinka ensimmäisen vuoden historian opiskelijat näkevät oman kielitaitonsa ja sen kehittymisen joko parempaan tai huonompaan suuntaan vieraiden kielten kanssa heidän omasta mielestään. This paper aims at sharing the experience we had in the design and implementation of a short pilot course of Italian in Second Life® (SL). The paper will provide a description of the course mentioning preliminary findings, discussed in relation to the theories adopted by the two researchers. It is now widely acknowledged in a range of linguistic disciplines that ‘languages’ are sociohistorical constructs rather than ontologically real entities. While this insight has contributed in important ways to challenging the monolingual bias in linguistics, a simplistic dismissal of the notion of ‘languages’ is unhelpful when trying to explain its status and function as a sociocultural, metalinguistic construct. This chapter draws on insights from linguistic anthropology as well as usage-based perspectives on language learning to argue that language use always involves an evaluative dimension linked with sociocultural conventions, and that it is such language use that forms the basis of …

Kirjallisuuden hyödyntäminen kieltenopetuksessa Suomessa on ollut suhteellisen vähäistä. Kirjallisuuden käyttö kielten opetuksessa tarjoaa kuitenkin enemmän hyötyjä kuin haasteita. Kielen oppimisen lisäksi kirjallisuuden käytöllä voidaan edistää laajempia opetussuunnitelman mukaisia tavoitteita esimerkiksi ihmisenä kasvua. Uusi opetussuunnitelma velvoittaa kehittämään oppilaiden monilukutaitoa eri oppiaineissa, joten se mahdollistaa myös kirjallisuuden käytön kieltenopetuksessa. The question that lies at the heart of this short essay concerns the effects of laughter on the relationship between the right to freedom of expression, on the one hand, and the potential exercise of verbal violence on the other. In short, the question we ask is whether the presence of laughter increases the spectrum of freedom of expression by reducing that of verbal violence, or, on the contrary, whether the very element of laughter does not laughter does not, on the contrary, determine a multiplication of violence in certain discursive situations.
