Language, Childhood, and Fire: How We Learned to Love Sharing Stories.

Stories do not fossilize. Thus, exploring tales shared during prehistory, the longest part of human history inevitably becomes speculative. Nevertheless, various attempts have been made to find a more scientifically valid way into our deep human past of storytelling. Following the social brain hypothesis, we suggest including into the theory of human storytelling more fine-grained and evidence-based findings (from archaeology, the cognitive sciences, and evolutionary psychology) about the manifold exaptation and adaptation, genetic changes, and phenotypic plasticity in the deep human past, which all shaped the emergence of storytelling in hominins. Diplomdarbs „Literāro tekstu izmantošana vācu valodas kā svešvalodas stundās vidusskolā” ir veltīts skolēnu lasīšanas spēju attīstībai vācu valodas stundās, izmantojot literāros tekstus. Tēmas izvēle ir pamatota ar to, ka literatūras nelasīšana ir bieži sastopama parādība mūsdienu pusaudžu vidū. Tādēļ mūsdienu svešvalodu pedagogu mērķis ir ne tikai attīstīt bērna lasītprasmi, bet arī veicināt skolēnu interesi par lasīšanu. Darba gaitā tika izpētīta zinātniskā un metodiskā literatūra, atlasīti atbilstoši literārie teksti, izstrādāti stundu plāni un veikta pedagoģiskā izmēģinājumdarbība. Jau sākot ar iesācēju līmeņiem (A1, A2, A2+) franču valodas kā svešvalodas apguvē ir ieteicams iekļaut literāros tekstus. Šāda prakse atver skolēniem durvis uz citu kultūru, bagātina viņu valodu, veicina intelekta attīstību un parāda skaistumu, ko sniedz fantāziju pasaule. The Syllogistic with Unity

We extend the language of the classical syllogisms with the sentence-forms “At most 1 p is a q” and “More than 1 p is a q”. We show that the resulting logic does not admit a finite set of syllogism-like rules whose associated derivation relation is sound and complete, even when reductio ad absurdum is allowed.

Logic and the Myth of the Perfect Language

We argue that the dream of a ‘perfect language’ – namely, a universal, unambiguous and semantically transparent medium of expression –, whose intriguing story has been told by Umberto Eco (1993), is deeply intertwined with the myth of instant rationality: the idea that a perfect language is one in which all logical relations becomeimmediatly visible, so that the language itself “does the thinkingfor us” (Frege 1884). In the first part of this paper we trace this versionof the dream in the works of Leibniz, Frege, Russell and Wittgenstein. In the second part we re-examine it in the light of more recent negative results in logic and theoretical computer science.

General and special education teachers’ knowledge about reading comprehension processes and instructional practices

AbstractThe study investigated teachers’ knowledge of reading comprehension processes and reading comprehension instruction. The study was carried out among teachers (N = 65) in Estonia. The content analysis classified qualitative data from semi-structured interviews as quantitative data. The results showed that teachers’ content knowledge about reading comprehension processes and pedagogical knowledge of reading comprehension instruction were considerably variable yet mostly limited. The outcomes of national literacy programs on basic reading skills in familiar language among Zambian early graders

In Zambia the Ministry of General Education implemented two national literacy programs in order to improve low levels of reading; the Primary Reading Program (PRP) implemented from 1999 to 2014 and the Primary Literacy Program (PLP) piloted in some schools in 2014 before being scaled up. This research examines the acquisition of basic reading skills among learners in familiar languages at the end of grade 2 in the two national literacy programs.
