Multitask deep learning for native language identification
2020
Identifying the native language of a person by their text written in English (L1 identification) plays an important role in such tasks as authorship profiling and identification. With the current proliferation of misinformation in social media, these methods are especially topical. Most studies in this field have focused on the development of supervised classification algorithms, that are trained on a single L1 dataset. Although multiple labeled datasets are available for L1 identification, they contain texts authored by speakers of different languages and do not completely overlap. Current approaches achieve high accuracy on available datasets, but this is attained by training an individua…
Audiovisual processing of Chinese characters elicits suppression and congruency effects in MEG
2019
Learning to associate written letters/characters with speech sounds is crucial for reading acquisition. Most previous studies have focused on audiovisual integration in alphabetic languages. Less is known about logographic languages such as Chinese characters, which map onto mostly syllable-based morphemes in the spoken language. Here we investigated how long-term exposure to native language affects the underlying neural mechanisms of audiovisual integration in a logographic language using magnetoencephalography (MEG). MEG sensor and source data from 12 adult native Chinese speakers and a control group of 13 adult Finnish speakers were analyzed for audiovisual suppression (bimodal responses…
Spatiotemporal dynamics of activation in motor and language areas suggest a compensatory role of the motor cortex in second language processing
2023
The involvement of the motor cortex in language understanding has been intensively discussed in the framework of embodied cognition. Although some studies have provided evidence for the involvement of the motor cortex in different receptive language tasks, the role that it plays in language perception and understanding is still unclear. In the present study, we explored the degree of involvement of language and motor areas in a visually presented sentence comprehension task, modulated by language proficiency (L1: native language, L2: second language) and linguistic abstractness (literal, metaphorical, and abstract). Magnetoencephalography data were recorded from 26 late Chinese learners of …
Modelling Without a Modelling Language
2018
Developments in computer hardware and programming languages, in this case C++, have made it feasible to write models of concurrent systems under verification in the programming language, instead of some established modelling language such as Promela. While this does not reduce the usefulness of modelling languages, it offers new possibilities that may be advantageous, for instance, when teaching state space ideas to newcomers or when experimenting with new scientific ideas. In earlier work, we were able to express everything else fairly naturally in C++, except the set of transitions. The present study uses C++ lambda functions to represent naturally transitions that consist of a tail state…
Motivic Pattern Extraction in Music, and Application to the Study of Tunisian Modal Music
2007
A new methodology for automated extraction of repeated patterns in time-series data is presented, aimed in particular at the analysis of musical sequences. The basic principles consists in a search for closed patterns in a multi-dimensional parametric space. It is shown that this basic mechanism needs to be articulated with a periodic pattern discovery system, implying therefore a strict chronological scanning of the time-series data. Thanks to this modelling global pattern filtering may be avoided and rich and highly pertinent results can be obtained. The modelling has been integrated in a collaborative pro ject between ethnomusicology, cognitive sciences and computer science, aimed at the…
Ver, imaginar, escribir el mar
2014
EnglishThe purpose of this paper is to describe the disc…
Textbooks as ‘Neoliberal artifacts’: a critical study of knowledge-making in ELT industry
2022
The present study examined the traces of neoliberal ideology in O-level English language textbooks taught in elitist private schools in Pakistan that follow the UK-based international educational system administrated by the University of Cambridge under the General Certificate of Education (GCE). Analysis in the study was informed by Fairclough's CDA writings. Moreover, Bourdieu's views on neoliberalism were also considered to shed some light on neoliberal ideology in the textbooks. Findings suggest that several neoliberal themes were evident in the textbooks under scrutiny, including marketization, consumerism, branding, celebrity culture, competition, individualism, self-responsibility an…
