Infant information processing and family history of specific language impairment: converging evidence for RAP deficits from two paradigms

2007

An infant's ability to process auditory signals presented in rapid succession (i.e. rapid auditory processing abilities [RAP]) has been shown to predict differences in language outcomes in toddlers and preschool children. Early deficits in RAP abilities may serve as a behavioral marker for language‐based learning disabilities. The purpose of this study is to determine if performance on infant information processing measures designed to tap RAP and global processing skills differ as a function of family history of specific language impairment (SLI) and/or the particular demand characteristics of the paradigm used. Seventeen 6‐ to 9‐month‐old infants from families with a history of specific l…

Translanguaging as Playful Subversion of a Monolingual Norm in the Classroom

2018

A large part of the literature on translanguaging as a pedagogical theory has explored how an inclusive multilingual pedagogy can support students from diverse linguistic and cultural backgrounds to actively participate in the classroom. While much of this literature approaches classroom translanguaging as an instructional strategy designed to promote multilingual interactional practices, we analyse how multilingual practices can also take place as subversive language play in an educational context that is driven by a monolingual norm. Our data are video-recorded lessons from secondary-level Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL) classrooms in Finland in which students whose L1 is …

Valenza e insegnamento della lingua straniera

2015

This work deals with valency, a key syntactic notion whose chemistry-inspired label was established by Lucien Tesnière (1959), one of the most well-known contributors to the Prague Linguistic Circle. We will concentrate on two questions: (a) to what extent does valency play a role in Second Language Learning (SLL)?; and (b) what role should the use of valency play in language teaching practices? This paper will provide answers to these questions and propose reasons for motivating the use of valency in SLL.

Stil' kak vyzov

2016

In the meta-theoretical framework, a full scientific theory is a complex hierarchical-network structure which covers three levels: 1) a set of ontological, epistemological-methodological and axiological assumptions (the philosophical basis of a theory); 2) a set of highly abstract theoretical notions and general theorems which compose the image of the world; 3) a set of notions and descriptive theorems which assert something directly about the object being examined (the empirical part). The author considers the first two levels of the full theory of style, i.e., he focuses on its philosophical part and chooses the notion of subject from the second level. He accepts, as the starting point, h…

Nome e numero: una parentela.

2014

In this paper we describe the relationships between two fundamental “cognitive gestures” of human beings: naming and counting. In particular, we try to define these relationships by examining the theoretical efforts of such authors as Euclide, Frege, Wittgenstein, Chomsky and Aristotle. The analysis is centered around justifying the mutual dependence between noun and number in human cognition.

Fluent Speakers of a Second Language Process Graspable Nouns Expressed in L2 Like in Their Native Language

2017

According to embodied cognition, language processing relies on the same neural structures involved when individuals experience the content of language material. If so, processing nouns expressing a motor content presented in a second language should modulate the motor system as if presented in the mother tongue. We tested this hypothesis using a go-no go paradigm. Stimuli included English nouns and pictures depicting either graspable or non-graspable objects. Pseudo-words and scrambled images served as controls. Italian participants, fluent speakers of English as a second language, had to respond when the stimulus was sensitive and refrain from responding when it was not. As foreseen by emb…
