Abelian antipowers in infinite words

2019

Abstract An abelian antipower of order k (or simply an abelian k-antipower) is a concatenation of k consecutive words of the same length having pairwise distinct Parikh vectors. This definition generalizes to the abelian setting the notion of a k-antipower, as introduced in Fici et al. (2018) [7] , that is a concatenation of k pairwise distinct words of the same length. We aim to study whether a word contains abelian k-antipowers for arbitrarily large k. S. Holub proved that all paperfolding words contain abelian powers of every order (Holub, 2013 [8] ). We show that they also contain abelian antipowers of every order.

La Sicilia negli Orsi di Dino Buzzati e Lorenzo Mattotti

2022

Settore L-FIL-LET/14 - Critica Letteraria E Letterature ComparateSicily in Bears of Dino Buzzati and Lorenzo Mattotti · In Dino Buzzati’s illustrated fairy tale The Famous Invasion of the Bears in Sicily (1945) and its film adaptation by Lorenzo Mattotti (2019) the Sicilian setting is decisive. In both cases Sicily is an island with a large volcano – transfigured into a fantastic setting or rewritten according to certain stereotypes – that the two authors use with different meanings within the ecosystem of their narratives. Only through a comparison between the two works will it be possible to distinguish the representation of the two Sicilies which are narrated within an interval of about seventy years. If one does not consider the story of the Bears merely a children’s fairy tale using simplistic stylistic devices but on the contrary sees it as an opportunity for the author to deal with serious and complex issues such as an ante litteram Ecocritical perspective or questions of inter-group conflicts derived from Subaltern or Migration Studies the images of the two Sicilies can provide altogether new interpretations.

Contribution to the analysis of signals obtained by dynamic photon emission for the purpose of studying very large scale integration circuits

2014

Scaling progresses has the benefit of making chips always more powerful. On the other hand, when there is a failure, the analysis of such advanced devices has became more sensitive. The defect localization step of this process is the critical one. Indeed, the aim is to find transistors which dimensions range in several nanometers on a device which surface is several square centimeters.Optical techniques like dynamical photon emission, also named Time Resolved Imaging (TRI), have proved to fit in such context. The later is based on the acquisition and exploitation of photons emitted by a switching CMOS structure. Due to its physical bacground, this tool has a limited invasive effect and can …

Functional characterisation of the first HSP110 inhibitors.

2023

Heat shock proteins are molecular chaperones highly expressed in haematological malignancies. My laboratory has shown that the heat shock protein HSP110 is a new and important therapeutic target In colorectal cancer and in non-Hodgkin's lymphoma. As there were no existing inhibitors of HSP110, a screening strategy of a chemical library was carried out and allowed the identification of two molecules capable of specifically inhibiting the chaperone activity of HSP110. My thesis objective was to characterise and functionally validate these newly identified molecules in diffuse large cell B lymphomas. I have shown that one of these molecules limits the interaction of HSP110 with the SYK signall…

Morphologically similar but not closely related: the long-spored species of Subulicystidium (Trechisporales, Basidiomycota)

2020

AbstractSpecies boundaries and geographic distribution of corticioid fungi (resupinate Basidiomycota) are often poorly known. Our recent study on Subulicystidium showed that species diversity in this genus is at least twice as high as previously recognized. This re-estimation of the species diversity was based on a study of only a part of the genus. The present study sheds light on molecular and morphological diversity of three more species. We generated 27 ITS and 24 28S nuclear ribosomal DNA sequences from 49 specimens labelled as Subulicystidium cochleum, S. longisporum and S. perlongisporum and collected in distant geographic localities. We assessed pairwise dissimilarities and phylogen…

Multi-epoch VLTI-PIONIER imaging of the supergiant V766 Cen

2017

Context. The star V766 Cen (=HR 5171A) was originally classified as a yellow hypergiant but lately found to more likely be a 27-36 M red supergiant (RSG). Recent observations indicated a close eclipsing companion in the contact or common-envelope phase. Aims. Here, we aim at imaging observations of V766 Cen to confirm the presence of the close companion. Methods. We used near-infrared H-band aperture synthesis imaging at three epochs in 2014, 2016, and 2017, employing the PIONIER instrument at the Very Large Telescope Interferometer (VLTI). Results. The visibility data indicate a mean Rosseland angular diameter of 4.1 ± 0.8 mas, corresponding to a radius of 1575 ± 400 R. The data show an ex…

Can the Adaptive Metropolis Algorithm Collapse Without the Covariance Lower Bound?

2011

The Adaptive Metropolis (AM) algorithm is based on the symmetric random-walk Metropolis algorithm. The proposal distribution has the following time-dependent covariance matrix at step $n+1$ \[ S_n = Cov(X_1,...,X_n) + \epsilon I, \] that is, the sample covariance matrix of the history of the chain plus a (small) constant $\epsilon>0$ multiple of the identity matrix $I$. The lower bound on the eigenvalues of $S_n$ induced by the factor $\epsilon I$ is theoretically convenient, but practically cumbersome, as a good value for the parameter $\epsilon$ may not always be easy to choose. This article considers variants of the AM algorithm that do not explicitly bound the eigenvalues of $S_n$ away …

Estimating the geometric median in Hilbert spaces with stochastic gradient algorithms: Lp and almost sure rates of convergence

2016

The geometric median, also called L 1 -median, is often used in robust statistics. Moreover, it is more and more usual to deal with large samples taking values in high dimensional spaces. In this context, a fast recursive estimator has been introduced by Cardot et?al. (2013). This work aims at studying more precisely the asymptotic behavior of the estimators of the geometric median based on such non linear stochastic gradient algorithms. The L p rates of convergence as well as almost sure rates of convergence of these estimators are derived in general separable Hilbert spaces. Moreover, the optimal rates of convergence in quadratic mean of the averaged algorithm are also given.

Random time-changes and asymptotic results for a class of continuous-time Markov chains on integers with alternating rates

2021

We consider continuous-time Markov chains on integers which allow transitions to adjacent states only, with alternating rates. We give explicit formulas for probability generating functions, and also for means, variances and state probabilities of the random variables of the process. Moreover we study independent random time-changes with the inverse of the stable subordinator, the stable subordinator and the tempered stable subodinator. We also present some asymptotic results in the fashion of large deviations. These results give some generalizations of those presented in Di Crescenzo A., Macci C., Martinucci B. (2014).
