"Words fly out of my mouth but also out of my head" : adult learners' challenges and successes in learning English

2017

Project DyAdd : Nonlinguistic theories of dyslexia predict intelligence

2020

Two themes have puzzled the research on developmental and learning disorders for decades. First, some of the risk and protective factors behind developmental challenges are suggested to be shared and some to be specific for a given condition. Second, language-based learning difficulties like dyslexia are suggested to result from or correlate with also nonlinguistic aspects of information processing. In the current study, we investigated how adults with developmental dyslexia and ADHD as well as healthy controls cluster across various dimensions designed to tap the prominent nonlinguistic theories of dyslexia. Participants were 18–55-year-old adults with dyslexia (n = 36), ADHD (n = 22), and…

Depth Attention for Scene Understanding

2022

Deep learning models can nowadays teach a machine to realize a number of tasks, even with better precision than human beings. Among all the modules of an intelligent machine, perception is the most essential part without which all other action modules have difficulties in safely and precisely realizing the target task under complex scenes. Conventional perception systems are based on RGB images which provide rich texture information about the 3D scene. However, the quality of RGB images highly depends on environmental factors, which further influence the performance of deep learning models. Therefore, in this thesis, we aim to improve the performance and robustness of RGB models with comple…

Hidden Markov Random Fields and Direct Search Methods for Medical Image Segmentation

2016

The goal of image segmentation is to simplify the representation of an image to items meaningful and easier to analyze. Medical image segmentation is one of the fundamental problems in image processing field. It aims to provide a crucial decision support to physicians. There is no one way to perform the segmentation. There are several methods based on HMRF. Hidden Markov Random Fields (HMRF) constitute an elegant way to model the problem of segmentation. This modelling leads to the minimization of an energy function. In this paper we investigate direct search methods that are Nelder-Mead and Torczon methods to solve this optimization problem. The quality of segmentation is evaluated on grou…

The Interplay Between Gesture and Discourse as Mediating Devices in Collaborative Mathematical Reasoning:A Multimodal Approach

2008

This article aims to identify the mathematical reasoning strategies expressed through gestures and speech used by two groups of sixth-grade pupils when solving a task related to the transition between two semiotic representations: figure and Cartesian diagram. The article also identifies the difficulties the pupils meet in the solution process. The analyses of the group dialogues focus particularly on the gesture dimension of deixis. The pupils in both groups have used the following deictic gestures: pointing, held-point, linear point-slide, and circular point-slide in their solution process, while repeated pointing has been identified only in one of the groups. These pointing gestures are …

Replacing radiative transfer models by surrogate approximations through machine learning

2015

Physically-based radiative transfer models (RTMs) help in understanding the processes occurring on the Earth's surface and their interactions with vegetation and atmosphere. However, advanced RTMs can take a long computational time, which makes them unfeasible in many real applications. To overcome this problem, it has been proposed to substitute RTMs through so-called emulators. Emulators are statistical models that approximate the functioning of RTMs. They are advantageous in real practice because of the computational efficiency and excellent accuracy and flexibility for extrapolation. We here present an ‘Emulator toolbox’ that enables analyzing three multi-output machine learning regress…

Development of Strategic Partnerships for Work-Based Learning

2019

Competitiveness of companies on local and international markets greatly depends on skilled labor force. There is an increased need for well-trained medium level specialists prepared by the vocational education and training (VET) systems. For countries with school-based VET systems tailor made approaches for work-based learning need to be implemented. This requires also new strategic partnerships. In Latvia in 2016 legal regulation on work-based learning was adopted. However, there is little research on the pre-conditions enabling the public administration to implement innovative VET approaches. The purpose of the study is to investigate the opinions of relevant public stakeholders from the …

The Induction Phase as a Critical Transition for Newly Qualified Teachers

2012

This chapter addresses the issue of becoming a teacher, with the induction phase as a critical transition from initial teacher education to the lifelong professional learning of teachers, and mentoring as a tool of support. It presents newly qualified teachers’ views on initial teacher education and discusses the need for fostering the connection between teacher training and the induction year. New teachers’ views on teacher induction and mentoring are based on research findings in Finland and other Nordic countries. Another important question addresses how initial teacher education can facilitate the metamorphosis of a student teacher into an autonomous teacher. The new teachers’ experienc…
