Takotsubo cardiomyopathy after a positive emotional stress
2013
Takotsubo cardiomyopathy, also known as transient left ventricular apical ballooning syndrome, is a cardiac syndrome mimicking an acute coronary syndrome and characterized by peculiar transient left ventricular wall motion in the absence of significant coronary lesions at coronary angiography. The pathogenic mechanisms linking emotional stress to Takotsubo cardiomyopathy still remain undefined. The onset of Takotsubo cardiomyopathy can be triggered by an acute, intense emotional stress. This is the first report reporting that not only negative stress but also positive stressful event may precede the syndrome.
On the Syntax of Fronted Adverbial Clauses in Two Tyrolean Dialects: The Distribution of Resumptive Semm
2023
Abstract This chapter discusses adverbial resumption in two Tyrolean dialects, Meranese and Mòcheno, which represent two privileged environments for investigations on microvariation. We show that certain classes of fronted adverbials are resumed in both languages by the resumptive element semm (lit. “there, then”), which behaves semantically like a generalized resumptive because it is used with a variety of adverbial clauses. However, unlike the Norwegian generalized resumptive studied by Christine Meklenborg, semm is a maximal category and cannot resume nominal arguments. We demonstrate that resumption with semm is limited to central adverbial clauses (e.g. temporal clauses), while periphe…
Hyperuricemia in patients with left ventricular dysfunction
2013
Introduction: Hyperuricemia is a cardiovascular risk factor associated with oxidative stress and inflammation, conditions that are involved in the genesis of atherosclerotic disease and in the progression of ischemic heart disease to heart failure. The aim of our retrospective study is to evaluate the variations of serum uric acid level in patients with ventricular dysfunction, in order to highlight any correlations. Methods: We enrolled 118 patients. In our population we identified three groups: patients with systolic and diastolic dysfunction (ejection fraction <50% and E wave 50% and E wave50% and E wave> A wave, n = 54). All patients underwent echocardiography and laboratory test …
Ventricular-vascular coupling in hypertension: methodological considerations and clinical implications.
2014
The present review is addressed to analyse the complex interplay between left ventricle and arterial tree in hypertension. The different methodological approaches to the analysis of ventricular vascular coupling in the time and frequency domain are discussed. Moreover, the role of hypertension-related changes of arterial structure and function (stiffness and wave reflection) on arterial load and how ventricular-vascular coupling modulates the process of left ventricular adaptation to hypertension are analysed. The different interplay between vascular bed and left ventricle emerges as the pathophysiological basis for the development of the multiple patterns of ventricular structural adaptatio…
On finite involutive Yang–Baxter groups
2021
[EN] A group G is said to be an involutive Yang¿Baxter group, or simply an IYB-group, if it is isomorphic to the permutation group of an involutive, nondegenerate set-theoretic solution of the Yang-Baxter equation. We give new sufficient conditions for a group that can be factorised as a product of two IYB-groups to be an IYB-group. Some earlier results are direct consequences of our main theorem.
Using Polynomial Loss and Uncertainty Information for Robust Left Atrial and Scar Quantification and Segmentation
2022
Automatic and accurate segmentation of the left atrial (LA) cavity and scar can be helpful for the diagnosis and prognosis of patients with atrial fibrillation. However, automating the segmentation can be difficult due to the poor image quality, variable LA shapes, and small discrete regions of LA scars. In this paper, we proposed a fully-automatic method to segment LA cavity and scar from Late Gadolinium Enhancement (LGE) MRIs. For the loss functions, we propose two different losses for each task. To enhance the segmentation of LA cavity from the multicenter dataset, we present a hybrid loss that leverages Dice loss with a polynomial version of cross-entropy loss (PolyCE). We also utilize …
Improved Estimation of Cardiac Function Parameters Using a Combination of Independent Automated Segmentation Results in Cardiovascular Magnetic Reson…
2015
International audience; This work aimed at combining different segmentation approaches to produce a robust and accurate segmentation result. Three to five segmentation results of the left ventricle were combined using the STAPLE algorithm and the reliability of the resulting segmentation was evaluated in comparison with the result of each individual segmentation method. This comparison was performed using a supervised approach based on a reference method. Then, we used an unsupervised statistical evaluation, the extended Regression Without Truth (eRWT) that ranks different methods according to their accuracy in estimating a specific bio-marker in a population. The segmentation accuracy was …
Stress Echocardiography and Strain in Aortic Regurgitation (SESAR protocol): Left ventricular contractile reserve and myocardial work in asymptomatic…
2020
Objectives: To analyze left ventricular (LV) myocardial deformation and contractile reserve (CR) in asymptomatic patients with severe aortic regurgitation (AR) at rest and during exercise, and their correlation with functional capacity. Background: The natural history of chronic AR is characterized by a prolonged silent phase before onset of symptoms and overt LV dysfunction. Assessment of LV systolic function and contractile reserve has an important role in the decision-making of AR asymptomatic patients. Methods: Standard echo, lung ultrasound, and LV 2D speckle tracking strain were performed at rest and during exercise in asymptomatic patients with severe AR and in age- and sex-comparabl…
Cardiovascular risk assessment beyond Systemic Coronary Risk Estimation: A role for organ damage markers
2012
BACKGROUND: Cardiovascular risk assessment in the clinical practice is mostly based on risk charts, such as Framingham risk score and Systemic Coronary Risk Estimation (SCORE). These enable clinicians to estimate the impact of cardiovascular risk factors and assess individual cardiovascular risk profile. Risk charts, however, do not take into account subclinical organ damage, which exerts independent influence on risk and may amplify the estimated risk profile. Inclusion of organ damage markers in the assessment may thus contribute to improve this process. OBJECTIVE: Our aim was to evaluate the influence of implementation of SCORE charts with widely available indexes of organ damage, with t…
