Implantation of phakic intraocular lenses (pIOLs) is a reversible refractive procedure, preserving the patient’s accommodative function with minimal induction of higher order aberrations compared with corneal photoablative procedures. Despite this, as an intraocular procedure, it has potential risks such as cataracts, chronic uveitis, pupil ovalization, corneal endothelial cell loss, pigmentary dispersion syndrome, pupillary block glaucoma, astigmatism, or endophthalmitis. Abstract A fast photon detection system has been built for the upgrade of COMPASS RICH-1, the large size gaseous RICH detector in use at the COMPASS Experiment at the CERN SPS since 2001. The photon detectors of the central region have been replaced by a new system based on multi-anode photomultipliers coupled to individual fused silica lens telescopes and a fast readout electronics system, while in the outer region the existing MWPCs with CsI photocathodes have been equipped with a new readout system, based on the APV chip. Aberrations impact A/V ratio calculated from full width at half maximum. We investigated whether aberrations affect A/V ratio calculated by tracking the vessels. Aberrations changed the A/V ratio. We conclude that aberrations impact A/V ratio.

Purpose To compare the in vitro optical quality of multifocal apodized intraocular lenses (IOLs) at different focal points. Setting University of Valencia, Valencia, Spain. Design Experimental study. Methods The Acrysof Restor +3.0 diopter (D) multifocal IOL with 2 main foci (bifocal IOL) and the Finevision multifocal IOL with 3 main foci (trifocal IOL) were evaluated. The optical quality was quantified using the modulation transfer function (MTF) at 7 focal points and for 3.0 mm and 4.5 mm apertures. Modulation transfer function of a toric intraocular lens: evaluation of the changes produced by rotation and tilt.

PURPOSE: To evaluate the changes in optical quality when toric intraocular lenses (IOL) are rotated or tilted and to demonstrate that IOL rotation produces an increasing effect of aberrations. METHODS: Modulation transfer function (MTF) and average modulation were used to analyze the image quality of a toric IOL. The axis of the toric IOL was rotated 5°, 10°, 15°, 20°, 25°, and 30° in successive MTF measurements. The tilt values were 0° to 5°, in increments of 1°, plus a tilt of 15°. Pupil diameters of 3 and 5 mm were used. RESULTS: The MTF decay due to aberrations was more sensitive to rotation than tilt. In vitro power profiles of multifocal simultaneous vision contact lenses.

Abstract Purpose To evaluate the power profile of multifocal contact lenses (CLs) using a new technology based on quantitative deflectometry. Methods The Nimo TR1504 was used to analyze the power distribution of multifocal CLs. The CLs under study were: Air Optix Aqua Multifocal Low, Medium and High Addition and Focus Progressives. Three lenses of each model were considered. Results All multifocal CLs showed a power profile characterized by a change toward more positive power values when aperture sizes become smaller. Fast photon detection for COMPASS RICH-1

A fast photon detection system has been built and assembled for the upgrade of COMPASS RICH-1. The system is based on multianode photomultipliers coupled to fused silica lenses to collect the light from a larger surface and to guide it to the photocathode, preserving the position information. The emphasis is on the fast response and high rate capability of the detectors and the associated electronics. The photon detection system is now ready and it will be employed in the 2006 COMPASS data taking. We report about the system design and construction.
Simbol-X Mirror Module Thermal Shields: II-Small Angle X-Ray Scattering Measurements

The formation flight configuration of the Simbol-X mission implies that the X-ray mirror module will be open to Space on both ends. In order to reduce the power required to maintain the thermal stability and, therefore, the high angular resolution of the shell optics, a thin foil thermal shield will cover the mirror module. Different options are presently being studied for the foil material of these shields. We report results of an experimental investigation conducted to verify that the scattering of X-rays, by interaction with the thin foil material of the thermal shield, will not significantly affect the performances of the telescope.

Abstract In this investigation the quality of two types of optical correction, hydrogel contact lenses and ophthalmic lenses, wascompared by measuring the modulation transferfunction (MTF) of the correcting lens plus visual optics system using an objective method. A merit function was defined in order to allow the direct comparison between the optical performance with the two corrections. A study on 10 subjects was undertaken, measuring the MTF of both corrections by using the double pass method. Background Rejection of Charged Particles in the Simbol-X Telescope: Preliminary Study of Protons Scattering

X-ray telescopes equipped with focusing optics in high eccentric orbit, as e.g. Newton-XMM and Chandra, showed a degradation of the detector performance and an important increase of the noise due to soft protons with energy between a few tens of keV and a few MeV, that are focused on the detector through the mirror module. It should be noted that the focusing of the protons by Wolter optics was an unexpected phenomenon. In Simbol-X a magnetic diverter will be implemented to deflect protons, in order to reduce the flux of charged particles impinging upon the focal plane.
