The impact factor as a measuring tool of the prestige of the journals in research assessment in mathematics

2016

The (2-year) Impact Factor of Thomson-Reuters (IF) has become the fundamental tool for analysing the scientific production of academic researchers in a lot of countries. In this article we show that this index and the ordering criterion obtained by using it are highly unstable in the case of mathematics, to the extent that sometimes no reliability can be assigned to its use. We explain the reasons of this behaviour by the specific properties of the mathematical journals and publications, attending mainly the point of view of the researchers in pure mathematics. Using the Journal Citation Report list of journals as a source of information, we analyse the stability in the position of the math…

2012

One of the main tasks of an academic library is to guide students in critical evaluation and the ethical use of sources so that they can interpret, evaluate and create information in a correct and proper way. This should be integrated into the subjects, which is a huge challenge. Many students are told that they can freely select the reference style as long as they are consistent. But it is difficult to be consistent when you barely know what a reference style is. It is not easy for the librarian to answer how one refers to a governmental white paper in a self-designed reference system. To do this in a simple way, it is desirable to share the task between academic tutors and the library.  T…

Foretrekker studentene trykte eller elektroniske ressurser?

2012

A project at the University of Agder has studied the use of e-readers as a tool for academic study. E-readers (Kindle DX and iPad) were loaded with texts from required reading lists in five courses with 94 participating students. Initially 87 students responded to the invitation to participate in a survey, but eventually 13 of these submissions had to be removed, as the degree of completion was not sufficient. The final response rate achieved was 79%. Students were in general positive to the use of e-readers but still show a preference for print on paper as the best medium for serious academic study. When reading books 54% preferred print, 28% a combination of print and e-reader and lastly …

Cloning of a novel putative G-protein-coupled receptor (NLR) which is expressed in neuronal and lymphatic tissue.

1993

AbstractA novel G-protein-coupled receptor was isolated from mouse and rat neuronal and lymphatic tissues. The amino acid sequence of the rat receptor (rNLR) shows an overall homology of 80% to a recently cloned receptor from Burkitt's lymphoma cells (BLR1) which is exclusively expressed in lymphatic tissues [(1992) Eur. J. Immunol. 22, 2795]. Much less homology between rNLR and BLR1 was observed at the N-terminus (about 40%), whereas rNLR and the mouse homologue mNLR show 92% amino acid identity. Northern blot analysis of NLR revealed a predominant 5.5 kb mRNA species in various brain regions and neuronal cell lines, whereas in the spleen a 3 kb transcript is predominant. This distribution…

El European Reference Index for the Humanities (ERIH) como criterio de calidad de las revistas académicas: análisis de la lista revisada de educación

2013

The European Reference Index for the Humanities (ERIH) has been proposed (and officially recognized in our country) as a European alternative to the dominant indices that have a known Anglo-Saxon bias. The aim is to raise the visibility of European research in the Humanities and in various areas of the Social Sciences, in order to improve coverage of the cultural and linguistic diversity of our continent. We analyze some of the circumstances affecting the results of the recently updated list of ERIH (´revised´), with special emphasis on the field of education. The results demonstrate the need to improve the criteria for entry into the index (completeness and quality) if ERIH is to achieve i…

Occupational exposure to extremely low frequency electric and magnetic fields and Alzheimer disease: a meta-analysis

2008

Background Among potential environmental risk factors for Alzheimer disease (AD), occupational exposures have received some attention, including extremely low frequency electromagnetic fields (ELF-EMF). A systematic review and meta-analysis of published epidemiological studies on this subject was carried out. Methods The search was concluded in April 2006. Bibliographic databases consulted included PubMed, EMBASE, Cochrane Library and NIOSHTIC2. Pooled estimates were obtained using random-effects meta-analysis. Sources of heterogeneity between studies were explored, as was publication bias. Results Fourteen different studies (nine case-control and five cohort studies) accomplished inclusion…

The Importance of the Romanian Library of Freiburg for the Romanian Exile in the Context of the Beginning of the Communism and the Sovietisation of t…

2018

One can notice a growing interest regarding the discovery and the highlighting of the forms of cultural resistance in the 1950-1989 period, especially the highlighting of the importance and significations of the post-war Romanian exile, in the communist period, based on the conservation and development of the interior existence together with keeping the modernist reaction regarding the autonomy of the aesthetics to its political insubordination. The Romanian Library of Freiburg constitutes an essential starting point in highlighting the types of cultural resistance of the exile. The Romanian cultural exile begun at the start of the 50s in Romania, when the persecutions of the intellectual e…
