Cluster Algorithm Integrated with Modification of Gaussian Elimination to Solve a System of Linear Equations

2020

The data accumulation and their inhomogeneous distribution lead to the issue of large and sparse systems solving in various fields: industrials, emergency management, etc. Complex structure in the data error creates additional risk to obtain an adequate solution. To facilitate problem-solving, we describe the technique that is based on intellectual division of data with following application of cluster algorithm and the modification of Gaussian elimination to different portions of data. In this paper, we present results of developed technique that was applied to samples of synthetic and real data. We compare them with outcomes of other algorithms (intelligence and classical) by using of num…

Status and recent developments at the polarized-electron injector of the superconducting Darmstadt electron linear accelerator S-DALINAC

2011

At the superconducting Darmstadt electron linac a 100 keV source of polarized electrons has been installed. Major components had been tested prior to installation at an offline teststand. Commissioning of the new source at the S-DALINAC will take place early in 2011. We report on the performance of the teststand, simulations, developments on the laser systems, new radio-frequency components for the S-DALINAC injector, and the status of the implementation of the source.

Disentangling cardiovascular control mechanisms during head-down tilt via joint transfer entropy and self-entropy decompositions

2015

A full decomposition of the predictive entropy (PE) of the spontaneous variations of the heart period (HP) given systolic arterial pressure (SAP) and respiration (R) is proposed. The PE of HP is decomposed into the joint transfer entropy (JTE) from SAP and R to HP and self-entropy (SE) of HP. The SE is the sum of three terms quantifying the synergistic/redundant contributions of HP and SAP, when taken individually and jointly, to SE and one term conditioned on HP and SAP denoted as the conditional SE (CSE) of HP given SAP and R. The JTE from SAP and R to HP is the sum of two terms attributable to SAP or R plus an extra term describing the redundant/synergistic contribution to the JTE. All q…

Systems of quasilinear elliptic equations with dependence on the gradient via subsolution-supersolution method

2017

For the homogeneous Dirichlet problem involving a system of equations driven by \begin{document}$(p,q)$\end{document} -Laplacian operators and general gradient dependence we prove the existence of solutions in the ordered rectangle determined by a subsolution-supersolution. This extends the preceding results based on the method of subsolution-supersolution for systems of elliptic equations. Positive and negative solutions are obtained.

Tasks for enriching the understanding of the concept of linear span

2018

International audience; The concept of linear span is one of the first abstract notions that students encounter in a course on Linear Algebra. Using the theoretical construct of concept image and concept definition (Tall & Vinner, 1981) along with observations about teaching and learning Linear Algebra, we present two tasks designed to enrich students' concept image regarding linear span. These tasks could be included in a problem workshop of an introductory university course on Linear Algebra. Each task is carefully created and/or selected so as to foster the ground for potential conflict factors to arise and be confronted. A preliminary evaluation shows that the tasks are well received by…

A Data-Driven Approach for Studying the Influence of Carbides on Work Hardening of Steel

2022

This study proposes a new approach to determine phenomenological or physical relations between microstructure features and the mechanical behavior of metals bridging advanced statistics and materials science in a study of the effect of hard precipitates on the hardening of metal alloys. Synthetic microstructures were created using multi-level Voronoi diagrams in order to control microstructure variability and then were used as samples for virtual tensile tests in a full-field crystal plasticity solver. A data-driven model based on Functional Principal Component Analysis (FPCA) was confronted with the classical Voce law for the description of uniaxial tensile curves of synthetic AISI 420 ste…

The influence of climate change on the soil organic carbon content in Italy from 1961 to 2008

2011

Abstract Soils are the biggest carbon store in the world (1500 Gt, e.g. 1.5 × 10 21  g). The European Commission indicates the accounting of soil organic carbon (SOC) variations in space and time as the first step in the strategy for soil protection. It is indeed necessary in evaluating the risk of soil organic matter decline and soil biodiversity decline, and when evaluating the role played by soils in global CO 2 accounting. Previous maps of SOC variations in Italy did not consider the direct effect of climate. There is a marked inter-dependence between SOC and climate. SOC increases with the increase in precipitations and decreases with a rise in temperatures. It is also known that land …

Non-Linear Hysteretic Instability in Rotating Machinery

2013

The destabilizing influence of the shaft hysteresis on the supercritical whirl of rotating machines can be efficiently counterbalanced by proper external dissipative sources in the supports and/or anisotropic suspension systems. The hysteretic effect may be treated either by dry or viscous models obtaining different but somehow similar results in the hypothesis of small dissipation levels. Thus the linear viscous assumption is often accepted as a crude approximation for a straightforward analysis of the whirling instability. Nevertheless the internal friction should be regarded most likely as non-linear and could be approximated for example by Coulombian models taking thus into account also the releasing effect of some shrink-fit coupling present in the mechanical assembly.

Analytical design of nonlinear optical loop mirrors for fiber-optic communication systems

2006

International audience; We propose an easy and efficient method for analytically designing nonlinear optical loop mirrors (NOLMs) for fiber-optic communication systems. This analytical design is based on a Taylor series expansion of the transfer function of the NOLM, from which highly stable dynamical regimes can be readily obtained for any desired pulse parameters. We present numerical simulations showing dramatically improved performances in a 160 Gb/s transmission system that incorporates the NOLMs designed analytically.

Mean Field Linear Quadratic Games with Set Up Costs

2013

This paper studies linear quadratic games with set up costs monotonic on the number of active players, namely, players whose action is non-null. Such games arise naturally in joint replenishment inventory systems. Building upon a preliminary analysis of the properties of the best response strategies and Nash equilibria for the given game, the main contribution is the study of the same game under large population. We also analyze the influence of an additional disturbance in the spirit of the literature on H∞ control. Numerical illustrations are provided. © 2012 Springer Science+Business Media New York.
