Determination of χ from liquid-liquid phase data in ternary polymer systems (solvent/polymer/polymer) with hydrogen bonding
2008
Two different models accounting for the dependences of χ and g interaction parameters on both temperature and composition have been applied to different ternary polymer systems (TPS) solvent(1)/polymer(2)/polymer(3). The ana- lyzed TPS have consisted on ten different polymer mixtures in chloroform as common solvent that can specifically interact via hydrogen bond. Experimental ternary phase diagrams determined by liquid chromatography were taken from literature. The application of the two models to the experimental data have served to obtain χij and gij interaction parameters for all the binary ij (ij = 12, 13, 23) interactions established between the three components of the system, with si…
Detection of the liquid ? liquid demixing by differential scanning calorimetry
1983
From theoretical considerations it is concluded that the demixing temperatures of moderately concentrated polymer solutions should manifest themselves in a change of the slope of the corresponding DSC trace; the effects are expected to suffice for detection by means of the commercially available dual furnace instrument DSC-2C from Perkin-Elmer.
Synthesis of New Functionalized Discotic Liquid Crystals for Photoconducting Aplications
1996
Abstract The columnar structure of discotic liquid crystals has been shown to be well suited for electronic transport parallel to the columnar axis. To tailor the processibility and mesophase behavior of such materials, several hydroxytriphenylene derivatives were synthesized. These hydroxytriphenylenes can be converted into oligomers, networks or polymers. Further, they can be reduced to arenes which posses reactive sites for classical aromatic substitutions. A number of mixed tail triphenylene derivatives and fluorescent, low symmetry triphenylene discotic liquid crystals were synthesized and characterized.
Tomographic and Topographic Investigation of Poly-D,L-Lactide-Co-Glycolide Microspheres Loaded with Prostaglandine E2 for Exte…
2010
Polymeric, biodegradable microspheres represent a good reliable system to investigate the release of bioactive substances in both in vitro and in vivo applications. Common biomaterials for the synthesis of these microspheres are aliphatic polyesters of the poly(α-hydroxy)acids, especially poly-L-lactides (PLA) and polyglycolides (PGA) or their copolymers poly-D,L-lactide-co-glycolides (PLGA). In our own previous studies we have developed PLGA microspheres with integrated PGE2 as model substance for a wide range of biomedical applications, especially in angiogenesis, fracture healing and cartilage repair. The synthesis is based on a binary solvent in water emulsion approach, where two differ…
Infrared spectroscopic study of a phenyl benzoate side group—methacrylate main chain polymeric liquid crystal
1994
Abstract The temperature dependence of the infrared dichroism of a side chain polymeric liquid crystal was investigated for two homogeneously oriented samples, one aligned with a PVA coating and the other aligned by a magnetic field. From the apparent order parameters, it was found that the rotation of the mesogenic side group was restricted. Not only the rigid part of the side group, but also the alkyl chains were found to be partly ordered. Realignment of the side groups was observed in the case of the magnetically aligned sample at the smectic-nematic transition temperature. Unlike the other absorption bands, the C˭O bond vibration band shifted to higher wavenumbers with increasing tempe…
Structure formation in doped discotic polymers and low molar mass model systems
1992
Abstract Doping of low molar mass materials or polymers, possessing disc-like units, with electron acceptors leads to the stabilization of columnar discotic phases or even to the induction of such phases in compounds which either display a nematic discotic phase or only an amorphous phase in the absence of the electron acceptor. The induced columnar phase corresponds frequently to a hexagonally ordered one. We have observed, however, in addition the induction of new columnar phases such as the rectangularly ordered (Dro) and the columnar nematic phase (Nc). The enhancement of the tendency towards the formation of columnar phases is a consequence of electron acceptor—electron donor complex f…
Discotic liquid crystals at the air water interface
1991
The monolayer properties of two types of discotic liquid crystals, hexasubstituted triphenylenes 1 and azo derivatives of phloroglucinol 5, were examined. First investigations show that these discotic liquid crystals form stable monolayers. It could be shown that electron acceptors insert into the monolayer of 1. Azo discs display a packing behaviour at the monolayer that is ascribed to a side-on packing of the molecules.
Phase identification of triphenylene-based discotic monomer and its main chain polymers
1998
Abstract A monomer, 2,3,6,7,10,11-hexakispentyloxy triphenylene (HPT) possesses a triphenylene core as a discotic mesogen. Polymers containing this discotic mesogen have been studied using wide-angle X-ray and electron diffraction. HPT is known to show a discotic liquid crystal phase, noted as Dho (h for hexagonal bidimensional lattice, o for ordered molecular spacing in each column). In this paper, however, HPT liquid crystalline phases, heated up from the crystalline state and cooled down from the isotropic state, were characterized in the diameter dimensions. In addition. the diameters of the columns are close to a parameter of two separate crystals. A core orientation was, therefore, pr…
Molecular Mobility in Oriented and Unoriented Membranes Based on Poly[2-(Aziridin-1-yl)ethanol]
2021
Unoriented and oriented membranes based on dendronized polymers and copolymers obtained by chemical modification of poly[2-(aziridin-1-yl) ethanol] (PAZE) with the dendron 3,4,5-tris[4-(n-dodecan-1-yloxy)benzyloxy]benzoate were considered. DSC, XRD, CP-MAS NMR and DETA, contribute to characterize the tendency to crystallize, the molecular mobility of the benzyloxy substituent, the dendritic liquid crystalline group and the clearing transition. The orientation of the mesogenic chain somewhat hindered this molecular motion, especially in the full substituted PAZE. The fragility, free volume and thermal expansion coefficients of these membranes near the glass transition are related to the orie…
Highly cross-linked imidazolium salt entrapped magnetic particles – preparation and applications
2012
Magnetic particles entrapped into highly cross-linked imidazolium salts were synthesized using a straightforward approach by radical polymerization of bis-vinylimidazolium salts in the presence of superparamagnetic iron oxide particles. Potential applications for these new materials as (i) catalysts for conversion of propylene oxide to propylene carbonate, (ii) supports for organocatalysts, and (iii) scavenger materials for palladium removal are outlined.
